10 Mandate: To implement Lakehead s strategic research directions by providing the highest quality research administration and ethics support services needed to realize the full potential of excellence for Lakehead s research and innovation enterprise. Research Services: is the first point of contact for faculty members who are seeking financial support for their research or assistance in administering their program of research provides assistance to researchers in preparing funding proposals, particularly those of a large-scale collaborative nature administers the University s research ethics programs (Research Ethics Board and Animal Care Committee). We also work with Human Resources to deliver our Biosafety and Radiation Safety program as it relates to research.

11 How to Apply for Funding Step 1: Familiarize yourself with available funding opportunities (funding opportunities advertised to faculty weekly by ORS) Step 2: Preparing the Application - Access ORS Resources: Funding guidelines Workshops/Information sessions Research Grants Officer SSHRC/CIHR-NSERC Res. 18 Other Funding Opportunities Mitacs Main Programs Accelerate Elevate Internships for graduate students and postdocs involving industry (no deadline). Two year postdoctoral fellowship involving industry. Globalink Globalink Research Award - provides funding to support senior undergraduate and graduate student research projects abroad (to reopen September 2016). Globalink Research Internship - a competitive initiative for international undergraduates to participate in a 12-week research internship under the supervision of Canadian university faculty members (student applications due September 20, 2016). Ministry of Research and Innovation: Early Researcher Award (ERA) The ERA program gives funding to new researchers working at publicly funded Ontario research institutions to build a research team. Each award to a leading researcher is a maximum of $100,000 and must be matched by an additional $50,000 from the researcher s institution and/or partner organization.

22 Research Ethics Board The Research Ethics Board is responsible for ensuring that all research involving human participants undergoes ethical review before the research commences. This includes research from faculty members, graduate students, and all human participant research that occurs on and off campus. ***REB review turnaround time for minimal risk projects is 2-3 weeks***

23 Existing approval from another institution? Still require approval from the Lakehead University Research Ethics Board Researchers submit through Romeo and include their letter of approval from their other institution. A delegated review is conducted. All researchers must complete the TCPS2 online Tutorial!

24 Animal Care Committee (ACC) The Committee s role is to ensure that all animal care and experimentation at Lakehead University is conducted within the guidelines of the Canadian Council on Animal Care and the Animals for Research Act. Animal Utilization Protocol forms must be completed for all animal use including research, teaching, testing, and field studies, and submitted to the Committee for approval before the research is initiated. Applications for review are administered through the Romeo Researcher Portal.

25 Tri-Council Agreement regarding release of funds Universities agree to: allow researchers to access funds AFTER ethics approval; and that if activities requiring ethics will only take place in the future, the ORS may release a part of the funds; Tri-Council Agreement on the Administration of Agency Grants and Awards:

26 Research Integrity Policy New Research Integrity Policy is under review with LUFA and will comply with the Tri-Agency Framework: Responsible Conduct of Research During the Fall 2015 semester, the ORS will be holding information sessions and consultations across campus The new Research Integrity Policy and its procedures for investigating allegations of breaches to the policy will be incorporated into Article 39 of the Lakehead University Faculty Association.

27 Lakehead s Economic Development & Innovation Office (EDI) is responsible for: Supporting the activities of the President's Advisory Council on Economic Development (PACED) on both Lakehead campuses, and assist in the implementation of various economic development initiatives Handling of Intellectual Property protection issues (including patents, copyright and trademark) Supporting the Commercialization and Licensing of University technologies Serving as a liaison between industry, the local community, and the University Assisting with University-industry-government collaborative programs Supporting the creation and development of start-up knowledge-based businesses Administering the University's Intellectual Property policies Creating and negotiating many different types of agreements, including the following: industry sponsored research; intellectual property ownership; licensing; confidentiality and non-disclosure; financial obligation; inventor compensation pool; collaboration and consortium; and material transfer.
