3 Insight Development Grant Value: $7,000 - $75,000 Duration: 1 2 years SSHRC deadline: February 1, 2015 Lakehead U internal deadline: January 18, 2015 Results announced: June (ish) Multiple applications: - Only one application as applicant per competition - Can only be applied to one of SSHRC, NSERC, CIHR - Cannot submit for both Insight Grant AND Insight Development Grant (in a calendar year) - Can only hold on IDG as applicant at a time Eligibility Anything in social sciences and humanities that does NOT fall under the mandate of NSERC or CIHR

4 Insight Development Grant Objectives Build knowledge and understanding from disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and/or cross-sector perspectives through support for the best researchers; Support new approaches to research on complex and important topics, including those that transcend the capacity of any one scholar, institution or discipline. Provide a high-quality research training experience for students; Fund research expertise that relates to societal challenges and opportunities; and Mobilize research knowledge to and from academic and nonacademic audiences with the potential to lead to intellectual, cultural, social and economic influence, benefit and impact.

6 SSHRC Research Priorities Future Challenge Areas What new ways of learning, particularly in higher education, will Canadians need to thrive in an evolving society and labour market? What effects will the quest for energy and natural resources have on our society and our position on the world stage? How are the experiences and aspirations of Aboriginal Peoples in Canada essential to building a successful shared future? What might the implications of global peak population be for Canada? How can emerging technologies be leveraged to benefit Canadians? What knowledge will Canada need to thrive in an interconnected, evolving global landscape? Aligning your project with these priorities can be advantageous

21 Strong Applications Address the objectives of the Insight Development Grant Try to tie-in to a future challenge area (without stretching it) Try to vary the disciplines so that multiple perspectives can be brought to the project Succinctly explain (i.e., do not overemphasize) the circumstances of interruptions or delays in your career beyond teaching, research, and administration duties Diversify partners include French and English-language partners

22 Strong Applications Also Involve students and/or postdocs at every level and stage of the project Acknowledge other noted researchers who are doing work related to your topic Provide rationale for their budget requests without stretching expenses Are consistent between budget and budget justification Integrate knowledge mobilization plans as important components Follow the headings and format of the application Don t repeat information Use maximum allocated space
