1 GREENBELT FUND ANNUAL REPORT 2013/14
2 SUCCESS GROWS HERE The Greenbelt Fund is about motion. It is about moving and connecting local food leaders and Ontario producers to our public institutions, retail, and foodservice markets with one common goal: to permanently increase the amount of local food we consume in Ontario. With leading-edge grants, outreach and education, thoughtful policy, and networking initiatives, we seek to create sustained and systemic change to the food system. 7:1 $687, For every $1 granted by the Fund, our grantees increase local food sales by $7 Average increase in local food sales per grant Number of Food Hubs supported by the Fund 231,000 7,800,000 2,100 + Number of University Students that have increased access to local food Number of meals served by healthcare Fund grantees in 2013 Number of businesses using Ontariofresh.ca to buy and sell local food We re about moving forward together on innovation.
3 The Greenbelt Fund is growing the business of local food. Serving school kids a healthy breakfast with Minister of Rural Affairs Jeff Leal (left), Burkhard Mausberg (middle), and Peterborough s Medical Officer of Health Dr. Rosana Pellizzari (right). 5 SUCCESS STORIES OF THE YEAR Counting Our Progress 1 2 Local Food For Everyone: Reaching Public Institutions From sharing food to sharing knowledge, the Fund has been active in seeding change this past year by ensuring more Ontario-grown food is purchased and distributed through public institutions and retail markets. Of our achievements, we highlight five of the top successes from Since the Greenbelt Fund started in 2010, we have provided funding to dozens of projects that are changing the face of foodservice and driving demand for local food. When we started, there were only a few distributors who could provide weekly lists of local produce; today the top three distributors in the province can not only provide robust local produce lists, but also dairy, cheeses, meat, and frozen and dry goods. Further, these distributors can also provide reports on the amount of local foods public institutions purchase, allowing for tracking changes in local food purchases. In total we have provided more than $5 million in grants and seen a return of nearly $38 million in increased Ontario food sales. This represents a $7 return on investments for every $1 provided in grants! For every grant we provided, we ve helped increase Ontario food sales by $667,000. There s still much to do, but we ve laid the foundation for substantial change within the industry. From hospitals to universities to high schools, this past year has proven to be an exceptional time for moving more local food into the broader public sector. Hospitals in Halton Healthcare s network have increased their consumption of local frozen vegetables from 0% to 48%. Non-profit organization, My Sustainable Canada is reaching out to the healthcare industry, post-secondary institutions, and long-term care facilities, to help partners across the province serve more local food. The company Sol Cuisine has made great strides bringing local tofu to the menus of public institutions, working with our grantees Ecosource and Halton Healthcare Services to achieve success. By connecting our project partners to each other we ensure we re all working towards a common goal: getting more local, healthy food on Ontarians plates. Local Food Challenge What can be done with $15,000 in one year? As our grantees have shown, a lot. The Local Food Challenge is a grant initiative for foodservice leaders in public institutions who want to make local happen in their kitchens. With the first Challenge successfully wrapped up, the second is underway with ten institutions creating new recipes every month that showcase seasonal Ontario ingredients. Kathy Berger, Manager of Food Services at Health Sciences North in Sudbury says participating in this year s Challenge, is an exciting opportunity to provide our patients with more local food because good nutrition means better health and quicker recovery times. 4 Food hubs are new and emerging tools for regional food distribution systems, helping handle the logistics of bringing food from farm to plate. Photo: Laura Berman The Ontario Pavilion at the Canadian Restaurant and Foodservice Association Show. 5 Ontariofresh.ca: Purchases and Partnerships Ontariofresh.ca continues to succeed as the goto resource for Ontario businesses to connect with the goal of buying and selling more local food. With hundreds of new members coming on board in the past year, there are now more than 2,100 buyers and sellers using the site to bolster sales and purchases of Ontario food. 3 4 Greenbelt Fund Food Hubs & Market Access Food hubs are facilities that manage the aggregation, distribution, or marketing of locally produced food from multiple producers. They ve proven to be valuable tools in helping Ontario farmers get access to more markets: one of the key barriers to accessing mainstream markets for Ontario farmers are the volume, consistency, and food safety requirements of large buyers. Our work has funded regional initiatives to consolidate products and develop value-added services across the province to help small- and medium-sized operations tap into these lucrative foodservice and retail markets. Our hubs are popping up in Sudbury, Kitchener, Waterloo, and Ottawa, to name a few. Market access is all about getting farmers access to new markets through food processing and major retail outlets. Because of our work, major retail outlets such as Sobeys are beginning to stock even more local Ontario produce year-round, such as Cookin Greens, organically grown and locally produced and processed frozen kale, butternut squash, and corn. 4 Education & Outreach: Sharing Our Success Our new education and outreach initiative is all about teaching, engaging, and sharing successes. This year marked the beginning of several exciting projects, including regional workshops bringing together buyers, sellers, farmers, and producers to increase local food sourcing in public institutions. With a focus on Sudbury, Niagara, and Eastern Ontario, we facilitated five workshops this year on local food and seasonality for the broader public sector. For the last five years running, local food has also ruled as a leading trend in the minds of Canadian chefs. Public and private kitchens alike recognize the value of buying and cooking with local ingredients. To assist Ontario food businesses capitalize on this, the Greenbelt Fund organized the Ontario Pavilion at the largest foodservice event of the year: the Canadian Restaurant and Foodservice Association Show. With 50 companies under the Ontario banner and a live demonstration stage featuring dynamic and interactive performances by Food Network Chefs Anna Olson and Brad Long, to name just a couple, the Pavilion attracted buyers of all sizes and generated new business opportunities for our exhibitors. Along with growth in members and the connections between them, Ontariofresh.ca launched a new initiative that brings regional brands and partners on board. Taste Real Guelph Wellington Local Food and the Ontario Culinary Tourism Alliance s Feast ON program have partnered with Ontariofresh.ca to showcase their brands and members on the site to crosspromote our efforts to grow the market for local food. Several more organizations are poised to join this initiative in Ontariofresh.ca is expecting to serve 2,500 users by the end of 2014.
5 NEW FUNDING The Fund s vision is strong, yet simple: to see local food come first in the Province s food system.
