1 Acceptance Instructions Congratulations on your acceptance to Boston University s Syria Archaeological Field School summer program! We are looking forward to your participation. The attached packet contains forms and information that will help prepare for your experience abroad. INSTRUCTIONS In addition to these program-specific forms, you must also complete the pre-departure documents that you were directed to through International Programs online system. The online system will also instruct you on submission of your $400 deposit to hold your place in the program. Send, fax, or these forms to the Boston office within two weeks so the program staff can begin to prepare for your arrival. PROGRAM COST The cost for Summer 2010 has not yet been announced and will be subject to approval by the Board of Trustees at Boston University. Cost includes tuition, housing, board, and field trips. The program fee will be charged to your student account, which must be settled by the deadline established by Boston University s Office of Student Accounting Services. PROGRAM DATES The Syria Archaeological Field School will run from June 1 to July 12, 2010 (the group flight departs on May 30). ORIENTATION The date, time, and location of the Syria Archaeological Field School program-specific orientation will be ed to you later in the semester. The orientation usually takes place in late April. It is mandatory for BU students and suggested for local non-bu students. If you can not attend, the orientation materials will be sent to you. 5 Residence Agreement Students must live in the program housing provided. Please read carefully and make a copy for your records, as you will be held to the terms outlined in the Resident Agreement once in Syria. This ensures that you understand and agree to the terms under which program housing is provided. Students on Boston University s Syria Archaeological Field School are subject to the same policies, procedures, and codes of conduct in place at Boston University. Students are prohibited from engaging in conduct, in the homestay, that poses a threat to the health or safety of persons or property, that interferes with the rights or well-being of others, or that violates any provision of the Code of Student Responsibilities, this residence agreement, or any rule/regulation of the University or International Programs, or any other applicable law. Students found in violation of these policies, rules, and regulations will be subject to University disciplinary action up to and including expulsion from the University. Students must abide by all rules and regulations that may be established by International Programs and the Resident Director in the interests of health, safety, the proper conduct of students, and the orderly and efficient operation and administration of the program and its residential system. Students must attend all program and individual meetings as they are convened by the Resident Director and/or program staff throughout the semester. The student is responsible for knowing and abiding by any materials and information discussed and/or distributed at any such meetings. Students must respect the rights of other students in the program housing. All program housing will be reasonably quiet at all times, and specific quiet hours will be in effect as established by the Resident Director. Students shall not make or permit their visitors to make any disturbing noise or other nuisance in or about the interior or exterior of the program housing that will interfere with the rights, comforts, or convenience of others. Smoking, whether by residents or any other person, is not allowed within University premises, including offices, classrooms, student rooms, and other common areas. Students are responsible for the conduct of visitors (including family, friends, and relatives), who must also respect and comply with all rules and regulations while in or about the program facility. Any breach by any such visitor shall be deemed a breach by the student. No overnight guests are allowed in the program housing, and guests, while in the building, must be accompanied by a student at all times. Each student is responsible for the care of the property in his or her room, and as determined by the Resident Director, in the common areas of program facilities. The cost of any repair or damage or loss to the residence facility will result in appropriate charges to the student(s) responsible for violating housing policy. Failure to settle these charges prior to departure from the program site will result in appropriate charges being assessed to your Boston University student account. It may also result in your inability to register for courses, an inability to have grades assigned, transcript holds, and delays in processing financial aid awards for future semesters. In addition, each student is encouraged to review his or her family s personal property insurance coverage. Boston University or any of its officers, agents, or representatives shall not be liable directly or indirectly for loss and/or damage to personal property by fire, theft, or other cause. 6 Visa Instructions SYRIAN VISA INFORMATION Syrian Arab Republic Ministry of Foreign Affairs Syrian Embassy 2215 Wyoming Ave NW Washington D.C You must submit all of the following materials at one time to the Syrian Consulate at the above address. Incomplete applications will be returned to students unprocessed. o Visa application completed in English. Available on our website. Sample applications can also be found on our website. o Passport signed by the bearer and valid at least six months beyond your departure date from Syria. You must send your actual passport which will be held at the consulate for the duration of the application process. Make all other travel plans accordingly. o One passport-quality color photograph with a white background. Please write your name on the back of the photograph. o Visa fee for U.S. citizens: Money order for $131* made payable to the Consulate General of Syria. No personal checks are accepted. o Return packaging and postage. We recommend that you use an expedited, trackable form of mail (such as FedEx or US Mail Express). Please allow several weeks for processing once the consulate receives your application. To have your materials returned to you, you must include a pre-paid self-addressed trackable, express-type mail envelope large enough to hold the return of your passport and other documents. Make sure that the envelope bears sufficient postage (metered stamps are not acceptable and the consulate will not send anything C.O.D./collect). Write your name and permanent address in the shipper section (not the consulate address) as well as in the recipient section of the return envelope. Keep a record of all tracking numbers, including the numbers on the return envelope.
