2 WIELS Contemporary Art Centre Several yearly large-scale exhibitions (Mike Kelley, Luc Tuymans, Felix-Gonzalez-Torres, Yayoi Kusama, Simon Starling, Bruno Serralongue, Kelley Walker...) which closely examine the evolution of the contemporary art scene An International artists-in-residency program focusing on innovation, research, creation and advancement, and which stimulates connections between local and international actors A mediation and education program through didactic workshops, teaching projects and seminars for the youth, seniors, schools, the neighborhood, etc.

5 For whom are the residencies? The Wiels residency program is designed for visual artists (painting, photography, scultpure, performance art, drawing...) who have already elaborated a specific and promising aesthetic language but want artistic, theoretical and professional support in order to develop their practice. The residency provides an environment and working spaces for artists who are open to dialogue, eager to create contacts and interested in establishing themselves in the international contemporary art arena. The artists are not evaluated based on age or level of notoriety; the originality and quality of the discourse and aesthetic language developed by the artists are the sole determining criteria.

6 Elements of the program 1. 9 working studios are accessible 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Studios are furnished and have Internet access year for international residents (7) / 6 months for Belgian residents (2). 3. Assistance in the creation and development of new projects. 4. Exhibition & performance: Wiels makes every effort to exhibit or perform the projects created by the residents during their stay. Projects intended for exhibition are developed in collaboration with Wiels curatorial advisors and are subjected to curatorial reviews. 5. An online archive of the residents projects on the residency blog: 6. Weekly meetings and regular evaluations with the artistic tutors of the programme: Willem Oorebeek and Simon Thompson 7. 1 field trip (Manifesta, Istanbul Biennale...) 8. Studio visits by curators, critics and professional artists 9. A program of exhibition/gallery visits in Belgium &/or neighboring countries

7 Cost of the Residency Program Paid by WIELS - Use of the individual studio + utilities (electricity, water, internet,...) - Technical assistance & coordination - Fees of the tutors, invited visitors and other professionals - Budget for working supplies (wood, paint...) - 1 study trips abroad - Exhibition / performance - publication / communication Paid by the artist - Accomodation - Personal expenses - Travel expenses

8 APPLICATION & SELECTION CRITERIA WIELS is looking for candidates who seek to develop their artistic practice in a professional context and to create new projects reflecting their experimentation and research. Candidates may work with any medium. Students are not eligible. WIELS welcomes emerging artists, but is also interested in working with older generations who are reorienting their career or who are willing to carry out a special project. All applicants must be at least 21 yo and not be enrolled in any degree program. Applicants may not be resident in another studio program at the same time as the WIELS residency. A jury composed of the artistic team of WIELS and the residency tutors select candidates on the basis of the quality of their work and their potential to take full advantage of the program.
