1 ABe-N Notes AGRICULTURAL & BIOLOGICAL ENGINEERING Issue 13 October 17, 2007 Funding Opportunities Library Scholars Grant Program underwritten by the Class of The Purdue University Libraries will continue the Library Scholars Grant Program this year with a focus on supporting access to unique collections of information around the country and the world. Awards of up to $5,0000 will be made for this purpose to untenured tenure-track members of the Purdue faculty, and to associate professors tenured effective July 1, 2005, or later, with grant supported activities to be completed by December 31, The Library Scholars Grant Program is made possible through the generosity of the 50th anniversary gift of the Class of 1935, and continuing gifts from this class and others, to an endowment fund in the Purdue Alumni Foundation. The Library Scholars Grant Program is designed to provide grants to untenured tenure-track Purdue faculty members and recently-tenured associate professors, to help them gain access to library materials necessary for research required for their continued growth as faculty members. Each Library Scholars Grant recipient will be asked to present a seminar about the information related activities supported by the grant. The seminars will permit the Libraries to learn from recipients experiences in order to better serve both Purdue scholarss and those from outside Purdue who visit our collections. The Library Scholars Grant Program awards will be in amounts of up to $5,000. The funds may be used for expensess associated with travel to archives or collections beyond Purdue, including the cost of transportation, lodging, meals, and fees charged by the library or other collection owner for access, photocopying, scanning, etc. Reimbursement will be made, for approved expenditures, up to the amount of the award. Criteria used to judge the proposals will include how well the ca se is made that the proposed information-r related activities will support the candidate s research and that conducting these activities requires travel to unique collections beyond Purdue, the appropriateness of the budget, and the feasibility of the project within time constraints. Proposals will be evaluated by a panel chaired by a tenured member of the Libraries faculty and composed of tenured faculty and one or more previous winners, with recommendations made to the Dean of Libraries. Award recipients will be contacted in December The deadline for submission of proposals is November 19, 2007.

Annual Showalter Trust Competition pre-proposal deadline has been extended; pre-proposals must be received in ARP no later than 8:00 am on Monday, October 22 nd. Please note: ONLY electronic applications will be accepted. Mission-Oriented, Internal Competitive Grant Opportunity - An essential component of Purdue University's land grant mission is to conduct applied research and disseminate science-based information to our diverse stakeholders. To better integrate our applied research and extension programs in Indiana, last year we established an internal competitive grants program. The intent is to encourage the integration of applied research and extension programs within and among departments in the College of Agriculture. We are pleased to offer again this year an opportunity for faculty to apply for these mission-oriented grants. Consideration will be given to mission-oriented grant proposals that clearly address at least one of the seven key initiatives outlined in the Indiana State Department of Agriculture s Strategic Plan. These are highlighted in the request for proposals and more detail may be found at: This year high priority consideration will be given to integrated research and extension mission-oriented grant proposals that address diversification of agriculture, especially specialty crops; food processing; or increased hardwood production, including environmental impacts. Approximately $250,000 will be available for competitive grants not to exceed $25,000 each. Grant funds may be used to cover in-state travel to research sites, expendable research materials and supplies, extension publication and website development expenses, student and part time hourly wages, faculty summer salaries or graduate student stipends. Funding for approved proposals will be for the 2008 calendar year only. If funds are to be used for graduate assistantships, grant recipients are reminded that there is no guarantee of support in subsequent years, and they will need to make arrangements for alternative funding sources for supporting graduate students in subsequent years. The missionoriented grants do not cover tuition waiver or fringe benefits. The grant proposal should be submitted electronically as an attachment to Jessica Crum (jcrum@purdue.edu) no later than 5:00 pm Monday, November 5, Notification to the grant recipients will be made by January Any questions should be directed to Marshall Martin (marshallmartin@purdue.edu) who is serving as the mission-oriented, internal competitive grants program coordinator.
