2 Delaware Valley Green Building Council SUSTAINABLE DESIGN COMPETITION 2009 PROJECT PROGRAM // DESIGN A SUSTAINABLE FOOD CO-OPERATIVE MARKET OVERVIEW The mission of the Delaware Valley Green Building Council (DVGBC) is to advance and promote sustainable and environmentally responsible planning, design, construction and operation of the region s buildings, landscapes, cities and communities, mindful of the legacy left for future generations. Each year, the DVGBC conducts a Sustainable Design Competition to engage students from regional colleges and universities. The goal is to incorporate sustainable design strategies into the college curriculum and empower students within the green building movement to become future leaders. Integrated with the LEED Green Building Rating System, the Design Competition unites students with esteemed individuals from the DVGBC and the local design community. Professors are encouraged to incorporate the Design Competition with the Spring 2009 college and university curriculum. The local DVGBC Competition is part of the national U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) 2009 Natural Talent Design Competition. Participants will compete in regional competitions across the nation to become local finalists and move on to compete for a national award at Greenbuild, the USGBC s annual Green Building Conference and Expo ( Finalists entries will be displayed and final judging will occur at Greenbuild Phoenix in fall of ELIGIBILITY The Competition is open to all college and university level students. Participants may work individually or as part of a team. Multidisciplinary teams are encouraged within and between educational institutions. Teams may be no larger than 5 individuals and only one entry is permitted per team. We strongly encourage individuals not participating as part of a design studio class to secure a faculty member or industry professional to act as an advisor during the design portion of the competition. Please check the USGBC website for a list of LEED Accredited Professionals in your area or contact your local USGBC chapter for help in identifying a professional advisor. REGISTRATION There is no registration fee. Each team/individual may only enter one local competition. This competition should be the competition geographically closest to your current location. If an individual does not meet the eligibility requirements of their local competition, they may compete in the next nearest local chapter s competition. PAGE 1 OF 9
3 Individuals Visit the USGBC website and register online at Registration with USGBC will be available December 31, 2008 at the above url address. There will be a list of participating localities; entrants will register for the competition in the area closest to them. All information must be complete to be considered a valid entry. A confirmation will be sent from USGBC within seven (7) business days of receiving the registration, and will contain information on how to proceed. Registration is mandatory to receive additional instruction on project submittals. Teams Only one entry form should be submitted per team and a primary contact is required. This person will receive important information from the local competition committee and is responsible for final submission. The team contact will be responsible for all communication between the design team and the Competition Committee. Additionally, the team contact should disseminate all information from the Competition Committee to their entire team. COMPETITION CHALLENGE With the mainstream media s ever growing focus on the benefits of fresh food on physical well being and education, the DVGBC 2009 competition challenge involves the design of a sustainable food co-operative market. The project should act as a stimulus for the local neighborhood and economy in which it is sited. It should serve as a community gathering place, uniting urban areas with surrounding agricultural areas. Similar to the Reading Terminal Market of Philadelphia, the food co-operative must include individual vendors and retail spaces, incorporating environmental and sustainable practices. The program integrates both permanent indoor and seasonal outdoor retail and community spaces. This project is well suited to the exploration of the principles of integrated design, sustainability, and innovation, and the resulting impacts on human health and well being. SITE Option A Participants may elect to design using the provided site, located at N. 27 th Street and W. Girard Avenue in Philadelphia, PA. Refer to Site Information on page 7. Option B Participants may also elect to identify and describe an alternative site location. Projects are encouraged to choose a site that is within the Greater Philadelphia region and/or local to the competition participant. If making an independent site selection, please choose a site with open access to the public, or clear your site visit with local authorities. PAGE 2 OF 9

Entries will be identified by the accompanying submission form and survey found on page 8-9. Completed forms must be in a sealed envelope affixed to the back of the presentation board. Design Analysis Each entry must also submit a written design analysis of no more than 200 words discussing both design goals and sustainable design strategies. The written design analysis may be incorporated directly into the information on the front of the presentation board or alternatively attached to the board in an envelope securely mounted to the back of the board. Compact Disk All entries must include two digital copies of the presentation board and a PDF of the written design analysis on a compact disk media. One digital copy should be submitted in JPEG or TIFF format at 300 dpi, full size; the other copy should be submitted in JPEG or TIFF format at 72 dpi or web resolution. Failure to follow the submission requirements could result in disqualification at the judges discretion. FINALISTS Finalists at the local level will be given additional time to develop and detail their designs. Finalists will be permitted two (2) 30 x 40 presentation boards for final presentation at Greenbuild in Phoenix. The finalists may be given specific LEED credits to consider, including material samples and details. An electronic copy of the two boards for entry will be due to the National EGB Competition Committee October 2, These electronic copies should be PDF files formatted to fit on an 11x17 sheet. Entrants are responsible for ensuring both boards are physically present at the Greenbuild Conference and Expo in Phoenix, for display and final judging. This will be coordinated with the National EGB Committee toward the end of September. Finalists are strongly encouraged to attend Greenbuild but are not required to do so. All projects in the final round of judging will also be posted to the Emerging Green Builders Website. As earlier stated, final presentations can be further developed and modified from the original project submission, although not redesigned. There must be a clear relation to the original submission. The Competition Committees at both levels reserve the right to disqualify any entry perceived to be redesigned. PAGE 4 OF 9
