Chair: Professor LynnDianne Beene. The dissertation examines G. K. Chesterton s literary criticism of Dickens, Newman, Carlyle, and Ruskin from a rhetorical standpoint. The thesis focuses on Chesterton s desire to redeem literature and criticism from the control of the academic elite and to return it to the common man. Chesterton s purpose was to establish a genuine common man s criticism and with it to challenge the assumptions about literature and its value prevailing among writers and critics of the time.
