The aim of this course is to review those timeless truths while also equipping the student with resources that will enable them to more effectively proclaim the Word to a post-modern and, even, post-christian audience. The first 7-8 page review will discuss the books, Deep Preaching and Give Them Christ, focusing on the following: i. A very basic overview of each book ii. How do the books complement one other? iii. What suggestions made by the authors are most needed in your preaching and why? How do you plan to incorporate them? iv. What questions might you add to Appendix 1 in Edwards book from your reading of Seamands book? Due: Monday, January 27, 2014 (submit with reading statement) b. The second 7-8 page review will discuss the books, Applying the Sermon, Preaching With Conviction, and Preaching As Art, focusing on the following: i. A very basic overview of each book ii. How do the books complement one another? iii. What suggestions made by the authors are most needed in your preaching and why? How do you plan to incorporate them? iv. Take a message you have preached in the last 3 months and revise it using some of the principles gleaned from the readings of these books. In your paper, discuss the changes you have made and why. Due: Monday, February 17, 2014 (submit with reading statement)

4 2) Students will prepare 2 written sermons in manuscript outline form (to be discussed in class of 8-10 pages) both sermons must: a. Demonstrate a grasp of expository principles b. Contain a big idea and clear main points c. Contain well developed sub-points with illustrations d. Contain clear application e. Demonstrate an understanding of contemporary audiences Sermon #1 A theological topic (i.e. baptism, reliability of Scripture, the atonement, etc.) Due: Monday, February 24, 2014 Sermon #2 A current topic (i.e. immigration, same sex marriage, the Christian and politics, etc.) Due: Monday, March 17, ) Students will preach a sermon for a real audience and solicit feedback through an evaluation form provided by the student. This assignment will require 3 steps: a. Submit evaluation form to professor for approval Due: Monday, February 3, 2014 b. Preach sermon asking people to complete the evaluation (this portion should be conducted by a 3 rd party) Due: Sermon must be preached by no later than March 23, 2014 c. Submit 6-7 paper detailing what was learned through the evaluation Due: Monday, April 7, ) Students will submit a plan* detailing concrete objectives to improve their preaching in each of the following areas: a. Theological and biblical integrity b. Sermon structure and form (outline) c. Audience Analysis d. Delivery Due: April 13, 2014

5 *In lieu of this assignment, students can attend the National Preaching Summit on March in Indianapolis and submit a 5 page paper on the experience detailing the value gained from listening to speakers, attending workshops, and interacting with other preachers. Class Policies 1) Attendance is expected of all students. Because of the nature of this class, missing more than one section (3 hours) may result in being dropped from the class. 2) All assignments must be submitted in hard copy form to the seminary office for pick up by the professor on the date in which they are due (other arrangements may be worked out if necessary by approval of the professor) 3) The professor reserves the right to alter or revise this plan.
