2 AHSAAA: President s Message to Athletic Directors A session for new A.D. s or first time attendees that has always been popular and well received. On behalf of the Arkansas High School Athletic Administrators Association, I would like to encourage all high school athletic directors and administrators to attend the 2008 AHSAAA Conference at the Hot Springs Convention Center on March 9, 10 and 11. We have finally been able to move the conference to March with the hope of attracting a number of athletic directors who could not attend in the past because of basketball conflicts. The conference comes on the heels of the state basketball finals that conclude March 7 at the Summit Arena in Hot Springs. I would also like to encourage all athletic directors to attend the second annual AHSAAA Hall of Fame Induction Banquet on Monday, March 10, at 7 p.m. Last year s banquet was marvelous and I know this year s will be another terrific evening. A banquet ticket order form will be included with the December conference mailing to athletic administrators. Conference and banquet information will be posted on the AAA web site in December. We will continue the tradition of having outstanding speakers on timely topics covering issues such as: New transfer rules that become effective July A presentation on using the new AAA website. A presentation on the AAA taking Cheer and Dance under their sports umbrella beginning July 1, 2008, with a question and answer period to help schools prepare their athletic department for this addition. Our Leadership Training Program will continue by offering two classes on Monday afternoon, March 10, and two more on Tuesday morning, March 11. Watch for the announcement of these classes. There should be at least one for everybody. The courses cover various aspects of athletic administration and are the basis for pursuing the Certified Athletic Administrator or Certified Master Athletic Administrator credential offered through the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA). The content is also valuable in addressing the day to day issues that confront A.D. s. In addition, a golf tournament will be held on Monday morning, March 10, at Belvedere Country Club beginning at 9 a.m. If you are an athletic director but have not yet joined the state athletic directors association, AHSAAA, I would like to welcome you to our membership and encourage you to join. Members of the association will receive a discount when registering for the conference. The conference has been approved for professional development hours for attending. In addition to the presentations and speakers, there will be over fifty vendors on hand to display products to help athletic directors with the operation of their athletic departments. The vendors will be available beginning Tuesday at 4 p.m. The conference has been a huge asset to Arkansas athletic directors and I hope all athletic administrators will be able to attend. Watch for the December conference mailing with the full agenda and registration materials. Grow personally and professionally with AHSAAA! Johnny Johnson, President Arkansas High School Athletic Administrators Association Basketball Update: Emerson High School will not participate in basketball this school season due to lack of numbers. The school is unable to field a high schools boys or girls basketball team. Old for the New: The Brookland Football Booster Club is in dire need of used football equipment as the Bearcats make plans to start their football program. The equipment list runs from bleachers, goal post, etc. You can contact Jason Cantwell at or by at cantwell29@aol.com or Krissy Cantwell at or by at krissy.cantwell@ipaper.com. 3 Guidelines to Minimize Infectious Diseases Position Statement and Guidelines National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Sports Medicine Advisory Committee: Preparation for competition in any sport requires proper training and practice. Whether it means preparing your body or maintaining your equipment, proper preparation is necessary. Keeping your body and equipment clean is part of that process. Infectious diseases do propagate and are easily transmitted in the sports environment. Contact sports and those with heavy amounts of equipment are more prone than others, but needless to say, proper hygiene is necessary in all sports to reduce the potential of transmitting these agents. The NFHS Sports Medicine Advisory Committee realizes these issues and has helped establish guidelines to educate the sporting and medical community about their presence and means to reduce transmission of sports related infectious diseases. Proper Hygienic Practices 1. Shower immediately after each practice or competition. Use your own bottled soap and towel and don t share them with others, let alone other toiletries. Studies have shown that transmission of infectious diseases can occur when these items are shared with other athletes. 2. Don t share water bottles. Viruses and bacterial infections can be easily transmitted via a shared bottle. 3. Don t perform cosmetic shaving. Needless shaving of the chest or legs or genital areas have been associated with increased outbreaks of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcal aureus (MRSA). Consider cropping or closely trimming the areas if necessary. 4. Wash equipment on a routine basis. Work-out clothing after each practice. Consider washing smaller pads (for knees or elbows) on a weekly basis or if soiled with contaminated material, each day. Larger pads, such as those in Hockey or Football, should be disinfected (1:100 solution of household bleach and water) on a routine basis. More frequently if soiled with blood or bodily fluids. Commercial equipment utilizing detergents or ozone for decontamination could also be considered. 5. Don t let abrasions or open sores go without evaluation by your coach or Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC). Be sure to keep them clean and covered with proper dressings. 6. Inform your coach or ATC about any suspicious lesion at the beginning of practice. Consider withdrawal from practice or competition until the lesion is evaluated by your Health Care Provider (HCP). If it is considered infectious, wait to return to competition until it has cleared by your HCP. Also have other team mates evaluated for such lesions and cared for in the same manner. 7. Don t use a whirlpool or cold tub with any open wounds, scrapes or scratches. 8. Shower before using whirlpools or common tubs. ATCA Annual Track Coaches Clinic The Arkansas Track Coaches Association will host its annual clinic at the Clarion Hotel in Fayetteville January 24-25, Some excellent presenters will make up the program and the clinic will include a business meeting to discuss ATCA projects for the year that promote track and field and cross country in Arkansas. The clinic date is set in conjunction with the Razorback Indoor Invitational Track Meet that will be held the same weekend at the Tyson Indoor Track Center at the University of Arkansas. The clinic will conclude on Friday prior to the start of the Razorback Invitational. The Razorback Invitational continues through Saturday as well. All track and cross country coaches are encouraged to attend. Coaches who are not members of ATCA will have the opportunity to join when registering for the clinic. More information will be available on the ATCA Website. Coaches are encouraged to access the ATCA website through the AAA website s Track/Xcountry page under helpful links in order to keep a close check on the AAA s information to track coaches: Sports Track/Xcountry ATCA. 3
