These concerns have negatively impacted our ability to provide safe and reliable transit service on these routes. As a result, we are making changes to Routes 9 and 90 in order to address these concerns while continuing to provide transit service in these communities. The changes will come into effect on Monday, Dec. 19. Our website has been updated with the latest information and new maps showing the route changes. Contact the office at admin@dalhousiecalgary.ca, or call Dalhousie Co-operative Playgroup Wednesday, September 30, 2015 June 8, Each session is about 2 hours long and consists of four (4) segments in the same basic format. 9:30 a.m. 10:15 a.m. large toy time 10:15 a.m. 10:30 a.m. circle time 10:30 a.m. 10:45 a.m. snack time 10:45 a.m. 11:30 a.m. craft and small toy time The playgroup objective is to provide a parent- attended program for pre-school children including gross and fine motor activity, imaginative play, exposure to music and rhythm, and socializing. For the parents, the playgroup provides important opportunities for friendship and support. Maximizing fun while minimizing work is the underlying philosophy of cooperative playgroups. Our Dalhousie Playgroup (founded September 1989), and the guidelines presented here have been adopted from an Ottawa playgroup, which has been operating successfully or over 20 years. It is understood that because of fluctuating personal circumstances members may not always be able to contribute as much as they would like. However, in order for the playgroup to function as a cooperative, some minimal acceptable effort must be forthcoming from each member of the group. Most members are surprised by how little work is needed to operate a playgroup smoothly and happily. Expectations Of Each Parent Each parent must fulfill six basic obligations: 1. Supervise his / her own child / children 2. Set up and lock up duty in rotation 3. Craft activity in rotation 4. Wash toys and sort craft supplies periodically 5. Assist weekly to sort and store toys in their proper containers and shelves Need current DCA membership - $32.00 Cost - $ / Child $25.00 / Each related child Lending Library at the Dalhousie Community Centre. Leave a book; take a book. Can be accessed during the regular operational hours of the DCA. Honor system. THE DALHOUSIE DIGEST DECEMBER

6 Dalhousie Kindergarten News As December arrives, we would like to extend holiday greetings and wishes for a wonderful New Year. We are fortunate to live in a generous and caring community and are thankful for the many kindnesses shown each day in our Kindergarten world. Through December our classroom theme focuses on the holiday season - wrapping packages, taping ribbons and decorating a mini tree are always favorite activities in our dress-up centre. We are continuing our music sessions with Mrs. K, and will be busy preparing for our annual celebration performance for our families on Dec 14th. At that celebration, we will also be drawing the winning tickets from our fundraising raffle. (First prize includes Flames tickets as well as a signed jersey!) Tickets are $5 and available from our office or any kindergarten family. Remember to buy yours! Proceeds will help offset the costs of special programming for our students. Our last day of classes is on December 16. Classes resume on Tuesday Jan 3 and we will quickly be back into action with skating lessons starting soon after. Don t forget - January is registration month for kindergarten programs across the city. With over 25 years of experience, we pride ourselves on our long standing reputation for excellence. Our experience allows us to provide a well managed program with an enhanced learning environment. Exciting learning opportunities and a strong academic focus ensures students are well prepared for their next stage of learning. Our integrated and welcoming classroom provides a variety of unique activities and learning experiences designed to keep your child engaged and excited about learning. We are also proud to foster a strong sense of community between our families and within our students. An on-site before and after school care program is offered by the Dalhousie Community Association. Our program is publically funded and follows curriculum requirements set out by Alberta Education. We welcome your interest and invite you to attend our Open House for the 2017/18 school year on Tuesday, January 10 from 6:30 p.m. 7:30 p.m. Kindergarten registration will take place on Tuesday, January 24 from 6:30 p.m. 7:30 p.m. on a first come, first serve basis. Each class size is limited to 18 students. Registration for Junior Kindergarten aged students, (should any available spaces remain) will open on Wednesday, February 1 starting at 9:00 a.m. in the Kindergarten Office. You are also welcome to call us at or visit our website at for more information. Dalhousie Playschool News The first part of the school year is quickly drawing to a close. All of our children are enjoying the themes we ve introduced so far including Community Helpers, Healthy Habits, Thanksgiving, Halloween and Christmas. Music class with Mrs. K has started and our annual Adopt-A-Family program is taking donations to support families in need in our community. Our next bottle drive dates are December 7 and 8. If you have bottles to donate to the playschool, please leave them just outside our classroom at the southeast exterior corner of the community centre. These fundraisers support programming in the current year, like our music classes with Mrs. K. In December, we celebrate winter and the holiday season with family Christmas parties for each class. We look forward to sharing the season with our families just before we head into winter break. Winter break is from December 17 to January 2 this year. Registration dates have been set for 2017/18. Our open house will be January 26, 6:00-7:30 p.m. and registration takes place February 7, 8 and 9, 9:00-11:00 a.m. Save the dates; more details to come next month. All classes accept ongoing registration, with limited space still available in our classes. Visit our website at or call us at for more information. Happy Holidays from Dalhousie Community Playschool! West Dalhousie Elementary School Out of School Care Program has available space for children mornings, afternoons or both. Please call for additional information on this program. THE DALHOUSIE DIGEST DECEMBER

This area is maintained by volunteers and we need help in making it available again this year. Please help us keep this area available by making a commitment to help with flooding and snow removal. To volunteer for either of these positions please call the centre at #1 or gm@ dalhousiecalgary.ca. Development in Dalhousie? It s Coming! series of community meetings scheduled recently A points to the fact that Dalhousie is experiencing a rise in the number of developments and in many cases the planned density of those developments. The Dalhousie Community Association (DCA) Board of Directors, made up entirely of community minded volunteers, oversees a planning and development subcommittee that looks at the development proposals and, where appropriate, provides feedback to the City of Calgary departments that regulate the issuance of permits. In an effort to provide more information to more residents more quickly, the DCA now posts development information on our website here: dalhousiecalgary.ca/developments. It is interesting to note that Dalhousie was recently named by Avenue Magazine as the third best community in Calgary out of over 150 communities. The article mentions a wealth of green spaces, roadway links to downtown as well as transit links and proximity to Nose Hill Park. Wrapping up the article Avenue states Dalhousie s strong suit is its community engagement. DCA Board of Directors Opening: Treasurer T he Board of Directors of the Dalhousie Community Association is currently looking to fill the Treasurer position on the DCA Board of Directors. As a member of the DCA Executive and the Board of Directors, the Treasurer is primarily responsible for the review of monthly financial records and statements provided by the DCA Financial Administration Team. In addition, the Treasurer will prepare monthly financial reports for review and Board approval at DCA Board meetings. Together with the DCA General Manager, the Treasurer will also help to prepare and monitor the annual operating budget of the DCA. If you hold an accounting designation, have prior Treasurer experience (particularly in a not-for-profit environment), or have extensive financial and accounting experience and would like to make a difference in your community, then we want to hear from you! Please contact the President of the DCA at president@dalhousiecalgary.ca for further details. Thank you! It s this strong community engagement and other factors like high property values that attract developers to the area. If you would like to know more about planned developments in Dalhousie, a trip to The DCA website is a great place to start. If you would like to be a part of the planning and development that will redefine Dalhousie as it enters its next 50 years, contact the Dalhousie Community Association to learn more about what is involved.
