1 Swimming and Diving DIVISION III MEN S Highlights Denison wins second consecutive title; beats runner-up Kenyon by 81 points for championship: While the finish of the 2011 NCAA Division III Men s Swimming and Diving Championships had all of the ingredients of a classic Hollywood drama, the 2012 edition was unabashed popcorn-fueled action. But both scripts ended the same, as Denison earned the program s second consecutive title March 21 to 24 at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis. Denison finished with a four-day total of 600 points, while second-place Kenyon ended with 519. The Big Red entered the final day with a 112-point lead and two of its strongest events on the schedule. Al Weik began Denison s trail to the championship with a meet record in the 500-yard freestyle on the first night. He was back on the final day to defend his crown in the 1,650 freestyle, which he did in style by breaking his own meet record in the event with a time of 15: Weik also was the runner-up in the 400 individual medley and the anchor of the Big Red s victorious and meet record-setting 800 freestyle relay unit. After the 1,650, Denison s lead grew to 117 points. However, an impressive showing by Kenyon in the 100 freestyle sent 76 points to its total, creating a 65-point swing in the standings. Suddenly, Kenyon trailed by just 52 points. Fortunately, Denison s surname in recent years has been Backstroke U. Senior Robert Barry followed his earlier win in the 100 backstroke with a record-setting performance in the 200 backstroke. The runner-up in the event last year to teammate Quinn Bartlett, Barry broke his teammate s mark with a time of 1: Denison re-established its triple-digit lead in the 200 back thanks to Barry, Bartlett, Sean Chabot, Jackson Humphrey and Michael DeSantis, as they placed first, sixth, seventh, eighth and 15th, respectively. The 58 points they earned enabled the Big Red to take a 103-point lead into the 200 breaststroke and effectively clinched the championship. In 2011 s 400 free relay, it was Spencer Fronk who edged Emory s anchor to place third and clinch Denison s title. No last-event heroics were needed in 2012, but the foursome of Sean Chabot, Carlos Maciel, Fronk and Mike Barczak did send Denison out with another thrilling finish. When Barczak hit the water for the anchor leg, Denison trailed Kenyon and Johns Hopkins, but a split for the senior landed the Big Red in second place in the relay with a time of 2: For Barczak, it capped a stellar career that included 23 All-America designations. Gabe Dixson also was a major contributor to the Denison cause, placing second in one-meter diving and third in three-meter. Following Denison and Kenyon in the team standings was Emory in third with 342 points, and MIT in fourth with 235. Kenyon s Zach Turk (50- and 100-yard freestyle), Emory s Patrick Augustyn (100 and 200 butterfly) and Whitworth s Rory Buck (100 and 200 breaststroke) also were double winners. In addition to the program s second team title, Denison earned its 25th top-five finish in the Division III championships. Since 2006, the Big Red has finished not lower than third place in the national meet TEAM STANDINGS 1.
