1 Association of Independent Colleges & Universities of Pennsylvania 2017 Calendar 2016 Annual Report of Giving
2 ABOUT AICUP The Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania (AICUP) serves its 91 two-and fouryear independent, not-for-profit college and university members located across Pennsylvania in many ways. Through partnerships and collaborative efforts with members, business and government, AICUP achieves: Increased cost-effectiveness for college operations through cost-sharing and group purchasing programs Promotion of collaborative work among members and with organizations in their surrounding communities Facilitated funding for grants and scholarships to increase access and affordability for all students Stimulation of economic and community development in the colleges communities Since our inception in 1952, AICUP s influence in higher education has continued to rise. AICUP s constant negotiations with business and government organizations result in cost-reduced collaborative partnerships saving money for institutions and students. Through the years, AICUP has become a respected source for policymakers interested in information about higher education in Pennsylvania. The trust between AICUP and the Pennsylvania legislature facilitates an honest and open discussion of public policy, allowing AICUP to play a considerable role in the future of higher education. ORIGIN AICUP was established in October 1995 through the consolidation of three existing educational organizations. LEADERSHIP Primary governance of AICUP rests with a Board of Directors, made up of 22 college and university presidents. Several standing committees and advisory councils assist in the development and oversight of specific Association activities. MEMBERSHIP The 91 members of AICUP consist of two and four-year, fully accredited, nonprofit colleges and universities in Pennsylvania. OPERATING BUDGET AICUP s fiscal year operates from July 1 to June 30. The operating budget is approved annually by the AICUP Board of Directors. DISTRIBUTION OF FUNDS Designated funds raised by the Association are distributed annually in June to the members. Use of unrestricted gifts to AICUP is determined annually by the AICUP Board of Directors. AFFILIATIONS AICUP is one of 32 state organizations affiliated with the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC), a national organization working to increase financial support of private higher education across the United States. LEGAL STATUS The Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania is a tax-exempt, nonprofit 501(c)(3) Pennsylvania Corporation. Upon request, copies of our Internal Revenue Service tax determination and our 990 forms are available. On the cover: Mount Aloysius College
3 CHAIR S MESSAGE Dear Friends of Independent Higher Education, AICUP s annual donor report focuses on two key groups our nearly 300,000 students across the state and the donors who support them through their generous gifts. As you know, the primary mission of private nonprofit colleges and universities is to educate students to become effective, contributing members of their communities and society at large. Our goal is to educate the whole person so that our students become great employees, successful professionals, and productive citizens. In this donor report we recognize the generosity of those companies and foundations that care deeply enough about preparing the next generation of citizens and workers that they freely give some of their resources to this cause. On behalf of my fellow Pennsylvania private college and university presidents, I thank you for your continuing magnanimity and steadfast support of our sector. This donor report provides general information about our students and donors, and in-depth information on several of our scholarship winners to give you a sense of the lives you are changing through your gifts. These scholarships would not be possible without your help. Pennsylvania s private nonprofit colleges and universities, located in more than 60 communities, contribute nearly $18 billion a year to the state s economy. Your contribution to this vibrant sector is more important than ever as we face some difficult challenges. The high school age population is declining in the Northeast; and the ethnic, racial, and economic makeup of the United States is changing. We understand that we must focus on affordability and access issues as we evaluate changes in our cost structure and address concerns about ability to pay. We are also challenged by increasing government regulation, as well as declining state spending on higher education. At the same time, more students are accessing higher education remotely. We must be strategic in leveraging new teaching and learning technologies to improve institutional performance without sacrificing the fundamental advantages of a residential college experience. In this challenging context, we are especially grateful for your support of our vital independent higher education sector and especially for helping us to prepare these talented students to make positive contributions to the workforce and to society. Thank you! Sincerely, Janet Morgan Riggs President Gettysburg College Chair AICUP Board of Directors

Reaching out to those who would benefit from the time and resources I can provide bestows a sense of meaning and purpose behind my actions. AICUP Foundation Each year, the AICUP Foundation provides scholarships funded through its endowment. This academic year, AICUP is providing ten $2,500 Commonwealth Good Citizen Scholarships. 7 February 2017 SUN MON TUE WED THU FRI SAT DAVID GARLOCK GOOD CITIZEN SCHOLARSHIP Eastern University Hometown: Chester, PA Class of 2017 Major: Social Work GPA: Presidents Day Valentine s Day This scholarship is allowing me to finish up my senior year. It is a blessing to be considered a Good Citizen as I spent 13 1/2 years in prison, but my life is now about the changes that I have made and using my experiences as the means to help others. When we fall down, that act does not determine what we will become in life. It is what we do while we are down that determines what will become of us. I was able to get up and have been making something of my life. Here's to continuing to make a difference in the lives of those whom I come in contact with on this journey of life.

I want to be able to take my occupational therapy skills abroad one day and help teach those in other countries where OT is not available for kids. I have worked with kids in various countries like Nicaragua, Peru and Guyana, all of which would benefit greatly from OT if the services were available.

Not only has it provided me with a humbling feeling in regards to my service, but it has granted me the ability to not have to worry about the tuition increase for this year because this scholarship offset the change which has meant more than I think anyone can know. I deeply appreciate receiving this award and am excited for this coming year of continued growth and service in my senior year at Chatham.

17 July 2017 SUN MON TUE WED THU FRI SAT EMMANUEL GRAY GOOD CITIZEN SCHOLARSHIP Villanova University Hometown: Philadelphia, PA Class of 2018 Major: Communication GPA: 3.21 Independence Day /30 24/ Prior to college, I was able to volunteer in Nepal for two weeks. While there I taught math lessons as well as helped them paint their school. From that experience, I came to understand that volunteer work is a two-way street: the volunteer adds value to a group of people in need, but also receives something in return. In my case, I received a life-changing experience the realization that people are fundamentally the same whether they are from a First World country or the Third World.
