New Hampshire Pace New Haven Franklin Pierce *games played through 2/9/11 Last Time Out: UMass Lowell 67, Southern New Hampshire 63 The River Hawks picked up a hard-fought victory over Southern New Hampshire on Tuesday night at home, defeating the Penmen Freshman forward Antonio Bivins came off the bench to lead his squad with 15 points, while two others scored in double-figures. Classmate led the team on the glass with nine boards. All-Time Series and Last Meeting: UMass Lowell 71, Merrimack 70 The all-time series between the Merrimack Valley foes is fairly close, as the Warriors own a advantage. They have also captured three of the last five and six of the last 10 meetings. The River Hawks lone victory in the squads four meetings last year came in the Northeast-10 Tournament Semifinal played in North Andover. The River Hawks, the No. 7 seed, upset the No. 3 seeded Warriors on their home court, en route to capturing the 2010 NE-10 Tournament Championship. UMass Lowell captured a win in the first meeting this season, a decision at the Tsongas Center. Freshman point guard Akeem Williams scored a personal-best 32 points in the victory, going from the floor. Sophomore Romeo Diaz was the only other River Hawk to score in double-figures with 12 points and a teamhigh nine rebounds. Merrimack was led by a 28-point, 11-rebound doubledouble by Darin Mency and 14 points from Wayne Mack. Rookie Antonio Bivins scored with 1.3 seconds left, tipping in a shot from sophomore Matt Welch, to give the River Hawks the narrow margin of victory. Scouting the River Hawks The River Hawk offense is sparked by freshman Akeem Williams with 17.6 PPG, while sophomore Romeo Diaz leads the way on the glass, averaging a team-best 6.2 RPG. Junior is grabbing a conference-best 2.6 steals per game and is also among conference-leaders in assists with 4.0/ game. Also averaging double-figure scoring are (13.9) and Diaz (10.2). Scouting the Warriors Darin Mency leads the Warrior offense, averaging 20.6 PPG, ranking him second in the conference, while Roland Davis (18.5 PPG), Wayne Mack (14.0) and Aaron Strothers (12.3) are all averaging double-digit scoring, as well. Tyler Young leads the squad with 8.3 RPG, while Mency is not far behind with 7.0. The team is coming off a loss to Saint Michael s on Thursday, but had previously defeated Stonehill on Tuesday evening. Merrimack Valley Connections UMass Lowell Head Coach Greg Herenda played under Merrimack Head Coach Bert Hammel, as Herenda was a member of the Warriors basketball team and graduated from the College in Additionally, UMass Lowell Athletic Director Dana Skinner was a member of the Merrimack basketball program before being drafted by the Boston Celtics. Commissioner s Honor Roll Four members of the men s basketball team were selected to the NE-10 Commissioner s Honor Roll for the fall semester, including: Antonio Bivins, Romeo Diaz, Pete Steere and. Last Season The River Hawks are coming off a season in The squad captured the 2010 Northeast-10 Conference Tournament Championship, as the #7 seed, before falling to Merrimack in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The team returns six veterans from the Championship squad and welcomes eight newcomers this year. Preseason Expectations The River Hawks were selected ninth in the NE-10 Preseason Coaches Poll this year, after being selected third in the season. Being picked in the middle of the pack doesn t worry the squad, though, as they were selected 12th in and finished the year ranked second. O Captain(s), My Captain(s) Coach Greg Herenda appointed three River Hawks as captains of this year s squad: junior guard, sophomore guard Scotty Tavares- Taylor and sophomore wing. Walton was a former walk-on, while Tavares-Taylor earned his way into the starting lineup in the postseason last year and earned NE-10 All-Tournament honors. Welch joined the squad midseason after being a part of the University of New Hampshire football program.
