1 CIVIL AIR PATROL PAO ACADEMY 2013 Maj Howell Balsem CAP Public Affairs Exceptional Achievement Awards More than 100 entries of public affairs work generated between Jan. 1, 2012, and Dec. 31, 2012, were received, resulting in 19 Balsem Awards (first place), 14 Awards of Excellence (second place) and 18 Certificates of Merit (third place). A Best of Show award was also chosen. That s a record 52 awards for this competition, now in its third year. Here is a complete list of the winners: BROCHURE/POSTER/FLIER 1st Lt. Michael J. Bernier, Squadron Open House Flyer (Texoma Composite Squadron, Texas Wing) Balsem Award The photos do a good job of telling the CAP story. The typefaces are nice too and easy to read. Great visibility! Col. Kathryn Joslin Walling, 2012 Maryland Wing Fact Sheet Balsem Award Great concept to provide comprehensive information to all units. Well done! The content is excellent. Senior Member Timothy Gooler, Recruitment Brochure (East Bay Composite Squadron 18, California Wing) Balsem Award We like the colors used in the brochure and the info in bite-size chunks. Engaging photos make for exciting and effective presentation. 1st Lt. Gary A. Brown, Fox Valley Composite Squadron Brochure (Illinois Wing) Award of Excellence Nicely done. Michaels, Faces & Places 2012 (Milwaukee Composite Squadron 5, Wisconsin Wing) Certificate of Merit There are many nice photos and stories. MAGAZINE Maj. Deborah S. Kawaguchi, Washington Evergreen Quarterly (Washington Wing Magazine) Balsem Award Very attractive publication good photos presented effectively. Engaging, in-depth articles that give good sense of wing members activities. And whoever is obtaining all the ads should give lessons in doing so! Maj. Denise M. Thompson, Peaks & Planes (Colorado Wing Magazine) Balsem Award Very attractive magazine. Nice photos used effectively, engaging stories, content covers CAP missions well. SLIDE/POWERPOINT PRESENTATION Col. Kathryn Joslin Walling, Go For The Gold: Maryland Wing Congressional Gold Medal Campaign Balsem Award Excellent in every way! Attractive, comprehensive, thorough. Could have been a model to use nationwide. Maj. Crystal D. Housman, Civil Air Patrol in World War II (Palm Springs Composite Squadron 11, California Wing) Balsem Award Commendable effort in producing engaging, informative and even inspirational presentation. Obviously thorough research; very nice use of graphics. Lt. Col. Brian H. Berry, Snoopy Log 2012 (Sandy Springs Cadet Squadron, Georgia Wing) Interesting, informative. Well done! Gonwa, Wisconsin Wing Website and Member Portal Balsem Award This site could very well be a model for other wings to emulate. It s a one-stop source for everything Wisconsin Wing! Very up-to-date, as well, which is notable. 1st Lt. Carlos M. Montague, Charles Composite Squadron Mobile Website (Maryland Wing) Balsem Award Great concept. Thinking outside the box is applauded. This, too, is worthy of emulation by other units. Lt. Col. David A. Miller, Missouri Wing Website Highly effective website that fulfills all goals in of keeping internal and external audiences informed. Structure is user-friendly. Maj. Michael F. Kieloch, New OswegoCAP.org Squadron Website (F.R. Sussey Composite Squadron, New York Wing) This new website is structured well. It uses attractive photos and is very informative. Extensive planning is evident and the site is reaching its goals. Capt. Dana E. Hylen, New Chartered CAP Squadron Website Design (Wylie Apte Cadet Squadron, New Hampshire Wing) Certificate of Merit Commendable effort of establishing a viable website in keeping with a clear vision for its use. Keaney, Solo Story (Connecticut Wing) Very nice image engaging for readers and especially our target audience. EXTERNAL MEDIA COVERAGE Lt. Col. Joseph R. Winter, GIIEP (Maryland Wing) Balsem Award Solid planning with excellent results. They set out to provide public awareness of cooperation between Civil Air Patrol and Maryland National Guard and they achieved it. A complete package! Maj. Todd A. Mandel, Veterans Day: A New Generation of Service (La Crosse Composite Squadron, Wisconsin Wing) Solid planning. Commendable results that generate publicity, specifically targeting their intended audience. Excellent work! Lt. Col. David A. Sanker, MOCAPTV-Online Video News Magazine (Missouri Wing) When the first judge who handled the Social Media entries watched the MOCAPTV presentation, he immediately concluded that the question of who would win Best of Show had been settled. When it was their turn, his fellow judges agreed just as quickly and decisively. The care and skill that Lt. Col. Sanker and other Missouri Wing officials consistently show in preparing MOCAPTV truly lifts it to the position of best of the best in this year s outstanding field of Balsem Award recipients.
