Recent Activities The 50/60 Member Luncheon Current Maryland Section members who reached their 50th or 60th anniversary as ACS members in 2016 were recognized at a luncheon on Friday, May 27th. After lunch, each awardee in attendance was presented with a certificate recognizing their achievement, and each spent a little time telling the group about their professional life as a chemist. This was followed by an informative and engaging seminar on the future of medical cannabis in Maryland by Professor James Saunders. The Maryland Section s Outing to Camden Yards On June 26th, a group of Section members and friends shared a summer Sunday afternoon with the Baltimore Orioles. It was hot and Sunny in the bleachers at Camden Yards, but the give- away Mark Trumbo tee shirts served well as sun shades. Most importantly, the Orioles won big against Tampa the final score was O s 12, Tampa 5, and the O s scored three home runs! September, 2016 Volume 73, Number 4

8 Upcoming Activities 2016 Braude Award Wednesday, October 26 th :00 pm- 8:45 pm Johns Hopkins University Speaker: Dr. Rebekka Klausen Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, Johns Hopkins University Rational Synthesis of Semiconductor Fragments Price: $20 members/nonmembers; $10 students RSVP: contact- Speaker Bio: Rebekka Klausen joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins University as an assistant professor in July Prior to JHU, she earned her PhD with Prof. Eric Jacobsen (Harvard University, ) and completed postdoctoral work with Prof. Colin Nuckolls (Columbia University, ). She directs a research group of eight students and postdocs, including three undergraduate students. Research in the Klausen group is dedicated to discovering new electronic materials based on organic and main group architectures. Abstract: Rational synthesis is enormously powerful for the construction of complex chemical architectures. The application of rational synthesis to organic materials chemistry leads to the isolation of innovative and well- defined materials inaccessible by top- down methods. The smaller synthetic toolkit available to the silicon and main group chemist limits the role of strategic synthesis in the design and preparation of semiconductor nanomaterials for optoelectronic and biomedical applications. This talk describes the development of new synthetic chemistry leading to BN heteroaromatic compounds, complex polysilanes, and charge transfer materials. The contributions of undergraduate researchers will receive detailed attention. MAALACT 2016 Conference, McDaniel College, October 7th and 8th, 2016 The 50th meeting of the Middle Atlantic Association of Liberal Arts Chemistry Teachers (MAALACT) next month in Westminster! This succinct conference gives liberal arts chemistry teachers the opportunity to meet each other, discuss topical teaching issues that impact their daily lives, and to hear viewpoints from experts in the field together in a

9 relaxed collegial environment. This year two such experts: Diane Bunce, STEM education expert, chemical education researcher, and curricular project author with the ACS; and Eric Nelson, writer for the Chemistry and Cognition blog, author of Calculations in Chemistry, and proponent of applying cognitive science to the teaching and learning of chemistry. In addition faculty from McDaniel, Goucher, and Wesley Colleges plus Notre Dame of Maryland, Alvernia and New Jersey City Universities will discuss topics ranging from SENCER ( to revitalizing/enhancing STEM programs and science writing.
