2 Our Host Wright State became Ohio's twelfth state-assisted university in 1967, although its history goes back to 1964, when the campus was founded as a temporary joint branch of Miami University and The Ohio State University. Names for Orville and Wilbur Wright, the Dayton residents who first achieved powered flight, Wright State occupies a 619-acre main campus, appropriately located next to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base northeast of the city. The main campus, within the city limits of Fairborn, academic centers in downtown Dayton and Piqua, and a 41-acre branch campus near Celina serve more than 14, 000 students. WSU offers over 2, 500 courses and more than 90 undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs through its Colleges of Business and Administration, Education, Liberal Arts, Science and Engineering, and Continuing and Community Education, and Schools of Graduate Studies, Medicine, and Nursing. A new School of Professional Psychology will admit its first students in In addition, there are frequent lectures, conferences, seminars, and workshops, often involving national and international authorities in many disciplines. Wright State's main campus environment is virtually free of architectural barriers to the handicapped. Special features include ramps, elevators, and other adapted facilities. An underground tunnel system links all major buildings. Nationally, Wright State ranks as a leader not only in adapted facilities, but also in counseling and support programs for the handicapped. The University Library contains over 330, 000 bound volumes, 370, 000 microforms, 83, 000 U. S. and Ohio government documents, 29, 000 pieces of nonprint media, and 5, 700 periodical subscriptions. It is one of two Ohio map depositories designated by the U. S. Geological Survey, and its special collection of Wright Brothers materials is second only to that of the Library of Congress. WSU continues to serve students who, for the most part, reside in the greater Dayton area. A majority of students commute to campus daily. A modern residence hall accommodates some 300 students who prefer to live on campus. There are approximately 13, 000 Wright State alumni, and the majority of these graduates reside in the greater Dayton area, where they are making important contributions to the development of their professions and their communities. 99
