I hope this article find everyone is in wonderful health and even better spirits! I would like to thank everyone for their support through the past few months of getting ready for our inspection. I must say I was one proud Master the night of inspection, as all those in attendance observed the officers of our lodge confer the Entered Apprentice Degree. We worked on our parts regularly, practiced often and conferred the degree a few times. I think our efforts were apparent to those who saw it. I ll also admit I experienced a certain feeling of relief as the gavel dropped at the end of the night. We came to do our best and I feel we delivered just that. That said, March holds more work for us. We have candidates waiting to receive their Fellow Craft Degree and we need to work on that. I will announce a practice and conferral time for this month to confer some or all of the work to those candidates. The first meeting of the month will be March 4 th and we ll have a guest speaker, Wor. Bro. Kenny Kline who will discuss the Eastern Star Ambassador Program with the lodge! I look forward to seeing everyone at lodge and with the weather (hopefully) improving; perhaps more brave souls who we haven t seen lately will come to join us for a stated meeting. Welcome to March. We can all hope that by now we are starting to thaw out a little. Our degree for inspection this year is the Super Excellent Master. Below is an excerpt from the Grand Council in regards to this degree: THE SUPER EXCELLENT MASTER DEGREE As we have stated, the degree of Super Excellent Master is not a degree of the Crypt. But, it relates events that lead to the recovery of the lost Word. This degree beautifully tells of a period in history in which all Freemasons are interested, that period following the destruction of the first Temple. The essence of the degree is foretold in the presentation by the Principal Sojourner in the Royal Arch Degree when he makes reference Zedekiah was one and twenty years old when he began to reign. He reigned for eleven years in Jerusalem and he did which was evil in the sight of the Lord his God. The degree of Super Excellent Master is one of the best devised, most impressive and beautiful degrees. It is most enlightening and relevant to ones daily life. In a display of exciting events, Biblical characters come to life exemplifying the historical drama of the Holy Bible. Here Nebuchadnezzar rules again; Zedekiah proves the results of his wicked life; Ezekiel and Jeremiah. We will be celebrating St. Patrick s Day, Dr. Seuss s Birthday and March Birthdays at the first meeting in March and anticipating the arrival of spring and anticipating as well as celebrating Fashion Week at the second meeting. First celebrated in America in 1737, St. Patrick s Day was organized by the Charitable Irish Society of Boston celebrating with a feast and religious service. This colonial holiday was held to honor and celebrate the Irish culture that so many colonists missed when they came to America. We continue to celebrate this holiday every year on March 17 th, honoring the Irish Patron Saint, St. Patrick. Your Worthy Matron and Worthy Patron have this Irish wish for you this St. Patrick s Day: May your pockets be heavy and your heart be light. May good luck pursue you each morning and night! Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known to the world as Dr. Seuss, was born on March 2 nd, 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts. Theodor was an American writer and cartoonist, most widely known for his children s books, written and illustrated under the name of Dr. Seuss. In addition to books, his works have been the source for children s television specials, a Broadway musical, and a motion picture. He was the recipient of Academy awards, Emmy awards, a Peabody, and the Pulitzer Prize. His book Oh, the Places You ll Go serves as our theme this year so it is only right that we celebrate his Birthday. Fashion Weeks are highly anticipated events held twice a year in the fashion industry to allow fashion designers, brands, and houses to show their latest collections in runway shows for the media and buyers to see the latest trends. More importantly, these shows let the industry know what s in and what s out for the season. The most prestigious fashion weeks are held in the four fashion capitals of the world: Milan, Paris, London, and New York. In honor of the Paris Fashion Week, Delta will be celebrating in style with our own fashion show: Clothes that Clash. Once upon a time, it was considered a mortal fashion faux pas to wear clothes that clash, not so for the Delta Runway. The only rule to clashing well is that there are no rules! 10 Page 10 THE MASONIC BULLETIN March, 2015 A Can of Worms! A Bee Hive and a Hill of Ants! Here we are again brethren trying to make some sense of the many attempts to increase attendance in our lodges. Remember the amenities orientated suggestion and the event orientated method in past articles? Next was the ritual orientated strategy of bringing brethren back. All failures in terms of attendance! Older lodge rooms were now up to date and modernized. We were now in the 80 s, brethren were busy with events like large Masters Balls, large dinners and brethren having a great time. The ritual was being preformed with the greatest of accuracy; everyone was busy and it seamed as if Masonry was on the march again but the attendance was still dragging. Masonry, in this period, was not only a way of life but the way of life for many. It supplied family entertainment, camaraderie, business support as never before and promised a never ending future to a few but, the balk of the brethren were still not attending lodge meetings and the petitions were drying up. Something was still wrong. The lodges, Masonry in general, needed a unified project. So the learned got together to come up with the next scenario to bring the brethren together according to Frederic L. Milliken, our Masonic author and editorial guru guidance. We may call this next scenario the charity orientated method. The idea here was to bring public attention to the fraternity interesting men who may have never given Freemasonry any earlier thought; therefore flocking to our doors for membership. Grand Lodge and District Deputies got on board and many lodges, under suggestion, took on large public charitable projects. Energetic brethren cleaned up old cemeteries, held blood drives, landscaped Salvation Army structures, sponsored Special Olympics, established many educational grant scholarships; we organized charity in depth but also forgot: Masonic charity is a very personal value. The youngest Entered Apprentice, when first facing the Worshipful Master, is taught about relief in a most effective way. Masonic charity is quiet, eye to eye, brethren to brother! Organized charity removes all personal contact, is impossible to control, hard to maintain in the long run and in many cases, used as a give-away. This method burns up a great deal of time and energy which may have been better spent talking with fellows about what Masonry is, rather than what Masonry does. Masonry is not a service club! An open wallet program became the easy way. No longer dirty hands, no time donated, no hard work and also no greater attendance or new candidates on the sidelines. An advertising campaign gone array in the attempt of informing the public about Masonry and our charitable nature. This attempt to gain membership and attendance meeting the quality lever of the organization became a challenge. The few newer members, as well as the rank-and-file, became disenchanted with always being asked to contribute more to strangers while the building operating committees were reporting that maintenance bills were becoming a burden in the larger Masonic Temples. It was like being attacked with a double edged sward! Do we maintain the level of charity of pay the gas bill! Next month, the next scenario. As always we are open to your comments, pro or con. Not everyone will agree with this Masonic author s account of the past 40 years of organization growth. Masonry has and always will adapt to its environment by changing with the world but, the changing world is not getting smaller today! Bobel, Your Editor
