PAC Offensive Player of the Week PAC Hitter of the Week JAKE BROWN 5-11 Senior 3B Cincinnati, Ohio Elder H.S. Brown batted.500 (11-of- 22) with two home runs, three doubles and 11 RBIs for the Saints, who posted a 4-1 record in Florida last week with the lone loss being a 4-3 defeat to preseason #1- ranked Cortland State. In the five games, he posted a.909 slugging percentage for TMC. Also nominated was sophomore CF Tyler Dillinger of Bethany, junior 1B Justin Scarpitti of Thiel, junior RF Neil Pascarella of Washington & Jefferson, junior 2B Wes White Jr. of Waynesburg, and senior CF Mike Williams of Westminster. PAC Pitcher of the Week PAUL UHL 6-1 Freshman Cincinnati, Ohio McNicholas H.S. Uhl posted an 0.00 ERA in five innings of work for the 4-1 Saints last week at the Central Florida Invitational, as he gave up two runs (both unearned) on six hits while walking two and striking out eight batters. Also nominated was senior Josh Tedesco of Thiel, senior Dan Vietmeier of Washington & Jefferson, junior Zac Rhoades of Waynesburg, and freshman Justin Prejsnar of Westminster. PAC PLAY OPENS: The 2009 PAC league schedule actually opened in Fort Pierce, Fla., on Saturday (March 14), as Geneva swept a doubleheader against Bethany. The two teams met to conclude the three-game series on Monday morning (March 16). The bulk of the conference schedule begins this coming weekend, as three-game league series begin with Westminster facing Grove City, Saint Vincent against, and Thiel battling Waynesburg. PAC BASEBALL Week 2 Conference Notes WHO S HOT: Geneva rolled to a perfect 6-0 week with DH sweeps of Martin Luther, Northwestern (MN) and PAC rival Bethany... Thomas More was 4-1 at the Central Florida Invitational last week, with the lone loss coming to preseason No. 1 ranked Cortland State (4-3)... Westminster went 1-3 over the weekend in Fort Pierce, Fla., led by senior CF Mike Williams (.429, 3 2B, 4 SB, 2 RBIs)... Sophomore CF Tyler Dillinger was 5-for-7 (.714) in Bethany s season-opening losses to Geneva. AROUND THE LEAGUE: Waynesburg posted a 4-4 mark at the Russ Matt Invitational, as junior 2B Wes White Jr. hit.385 (10-of-26) with 10 runs scored and four steals... After an 0-8 Spring Training trip, Saint Vincent earned its first victory of the season by defeating Penn State-Altoona 4-3 in the first game of a home doubleheader Saturday... W&J opened the season with a split vs. Ripon at the Russ Matt Invitational... Grove City has not won at Westminster, where the Wolverines play Friday, since March 29, 2004.
2 Bethany Bison (0-2, 0-0 PAC) Bethany opened the season with a pair of losses to Geneva in Florida The Bison scored in the top of the 1 st of game 1, but the GTs scored two runs in the fourth and fifth and seven in the sixth to claim the win CF Tyler Dillinger (3-3) and 2B Eric Fudala (2-3) accounted for all 5 BC hits Bethany trailed Geneva 6-2 entering the seventh inning in game two, but Chris Leasure s two-run homer helped the Bison get within a run and they loaded the bases with two outs However, Geneva got a pop-up for the final out to hold on for the victory Leasure s long ball was the 13 th of his career Dillinger, junior C Josh Lawrence and freshman DH Alejandro Texeira each had two hits for the Bison, who outhit the GTs PAC BASEBALL NOTES Geneva Golden Tornadoes (8-2) Geneva baseball is off to a tremendous start... At the end of the week, the Golden Tornadoes were riding a seven-game winning streak, including a perfect 6-0 record last week... Doubleheader sweeps over Martin Luther, Northwestern and PAC foe Bethany sparked the perfect week... Derek Sumner won both outings and combined for 23 strikeouts in 14 innings of work... With the bat, Sumner was 12-for-25 (.480) last week and provided the biggest hit, as he launched a grand slam as part of Geneva s five-run sixth inning in a come-from-behind 6-5 victory over Bethany Saturday... Freshman Mike Trn picked up a win and a save during the 6-0 week and junior C Joe Jurinko was 6-for-10 (.600) at the plate. Grove City Wolverines (2-4, 0-0 PAC) Grove City opens Presidents Athletic Conference play Friday afternoon at Westminster Saturday, the Wolverines host Westminster in the first PAC doubleheader of the 2009 schedule Grove City has not played since February 28 Friday s game is also the northern opener for Grove City The Wolverines have not won at Westminster since a 12-8 win in New Wilmington March 29, 2004 The Noceramen have defeated Grove City five straight times Grove City is the defending conference champion. Saint Vincent Bearcats (1-9) In their only action of the week, the Bearcats split a home doubleheader with Mount Aloysius Saturday... In the opener, a 4-3 SVC win, freshman Jeremy Mains notched his second straight complete game on the hill, earning the win by scattering seven hits and striking out eight with no walks, while also picking off three runners on the basepaths... Trailing 3-2 in the sixth, sophomore Mike Christiansen blasted a two-run homer which proved to be the game winner... In the nightcap, SVC jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but the Mounties scored six unanswered runs only three earned over the final 2 1/3 innings to pick up the 6-3 win... Sophomore Dustin Loussedes led SVC at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a single, double, homer and three RBIs... Rob Patula and Jeremy Rodgers each went 2-for-3. Washington & Jefferson Presidents (1-1, 0-0 PAC) Thiel Tomcats (7-3, 0-0 PAC) No. 18 Thiel s late rally came up a run short in baseball action Sunday, as DeSales downed the visiting Tomcats 7-6 to force a split in the twogame series Senior OF Eric Boylan drilled a one-run homer his second of the year in the top of the ninth to close the DeSales lead to one, but the next three Thiel batters were retired to end the game SP Dave Diyorio suffered his first loss of the season Saturday, Thiel improved the 7-2 with a 4-1 win in the first game of the series... SP Josh Tedesco improved to 2-1, as the southpaw allowed just one earned run on four hits while striking out five The Tomcat defense turned in its third consecutive error-free game The top of the Thiel order Matt Stumpf, Andrew Howard, Eric Boylan and Justin Scarpitti each had two hits. Waynesburg Yellow Jackets (5-6, 0-0 PAC) Saints (4-1-1, 0-0 PAC) The Saints went 4-1 last week at the Central Florida Invitational in Winter Haven, Fla.... The Saints only loss was 4-3 decision to preseason No. 1-ranked Cortland State University Senior 3B Jake Brown led the Saints at the plate in Florida as he went 11-for-22 with two home runs, two doubles and 11 RBIs Freshman 1B Andrew Thole went 10-for-24 with three home runs, one double and seven RBIs Sophomore 1B Spencer Franzreb was also hot as he was 9-for-20 with two home runs, two doubles and a triple On the mound, freshman Paul Uhl went five innings, giving up two runs (both unearned), on five hits, while striking out eight batters and walking two. Westminster Titans (2-6, 0-0 PAC) Washington & Jefferson split a doubleheader with Ripon (Wisc.) in its opener at the Russ Matt Tournament in Central Florida on Sunday Junior RF Neil Pascarella drove in two runs in each game and senior RHP Dan Vietmeier threw two innings of scoreless relief to earn the win Junior OFs Frank Quirin and Jim Pasquine both had three hits in the game one victory. Waynesburg is coming off of a solid 4-4 spring trip the Russ Matt Baseball Invitational in Florida over their Spring Break week... After dropping a pair of contests to Mount Union, the Jackets got their first win of the trip, which was a 3-2 triumph over Trine (Ind.)... Following a loss to Trine in the second game of their double-header, the Yellow Jackets rebounded nicely by sweeping a pair of contests from Cazenovia (N.Y.) by the finals of 13-6 and Waynesburg made it three in a row with an 8-7 win over Baldwin-Wallace on Friday the 13 th... Unfortunately, the Jackets winning streak came to an end with that victory as they fell in a heart-breaking 3-2 loss to B-W. Westminster went 1-3 in its first two doubleheaders in Fort Pierce, Fla.... The Titans split a twinbill Saturday with Delaware Valley, losing 3-2 and winning 7-6, with each game ending on a walk-off hit in extra innings... Westminster then lost both games against Mount St. Vincent, 6-5 and 9-6, Sunday... Senior Mike Williams led the Titans during the weekend by going 6-for-14 with 2 RBI, 3 doubles and 4 stolen bases... Williams best game was a 3-for-4 showing in the win... Also in the win, senior SS Nick Maiorano went 3- for-4 including the game-winning RBI single in the eighth inning... Junior RP Dave Evans took the decision in three games with a 1-2 record... Evans also hit a solo home run in game one vs. MSV to put the Titans up 4-1 in the third inning before the Dolphins came back from a 5-3 deficit in the seventh inning.
