2 Careers and labour market information This session aims to cover locally produced sources of careers and labour market information that support the achievement of Gatsby Benchmark 2 and meet the requirements of the DfE Careers Strategy and also the Quality in Careers Standard.
3 What is LMI? Labour market information? Labour market intelligence? Hard LMI? Soft LMI? Labour market information Qualitative or quantitative facts or analysis about the past, present or future labour market Labour market intelligence The interpretation of data to help people understand the labour market. Hard LMI researched data ie from BRES, ONS, ASHE, LEPs, professional bodies Soft LMI information such as newspaper articles or verbal information
4 What can it tell us? Skills and qualifications required, career pathways and progression routes in the local labour market Key employment sectors employers, jobs, salaries and trends, ie skill shortages, growth areas Local job opportunities, who is hiring and firing What types of jobs are increasing/decreasing Apprenticeships and training which sectors, numbers of apprenticeships in the local area, vacancies FE - courses, qualifications, entry requirements, destinations, costs HE graduate destinations, skills and employment rates, degree apprenticeships (Gatsby Benchmark 2)
5 Why is it useful? Gatsby 2 sets out the reasons why careers and labour market information is useful. It: Supports informed, realistic, effective career decision making Enables students to match the skills they have/need to the sectors/employers require and also what jobs or careers might be available Informs students and parents/carers about different job sectors, pay rates, vacancies, growth areas and skill shortages etc It helps students and parents/carers understand the new and developing routes and pathways into the world of work and their future role within it Can highlight the competition to get into particular jobs/careers
6 Caveats LMI is an indicator of what is happening now and what might happen in the future It covers broad trends and is only a guide, there are many factors for a student to consider when deciding on a career path We use the latest information available in our publications but sometimes the latest LMI can be 2-3 years old LMI should be used with caution - can be complex and contradictory
