3 Oldbury Academy Careers Education and Guidance (CEIAG) Policy 1. Introduction At Oldbury Academy our Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) programme is an integral part of the preparation of pupils for the opportunities and experiences of adult life. It is statutory from Year 8 that we are committed to providing outstanding CEIAG for all students. Our whole school aim aim is to equip pupils with the skills to manage the choices, changes and transitions affecting their future education, training, employment and life as adult members of an international society. The ethos of the school is to Celebrate together, Achievement for all, Respect each other and Expectations to succeed C.A.R.E. All Students are able to achieve but can only fulfil their potential if they understand themselves, their abilities and the possibilities available to them, aptly demonstrated by our moto Learn today Lead tomorrow The policy sets out how the school complies with the statutory requirements o 2011 Education Act and subsequently guidance contained in Careers guidance and Inspiration in Schools (DFE March 2015) and any later revisions. Rationale for CEIAG A young person s career is the progress they make in learning and work. All young people need a planned programme of activities to help them choose pathways that are right for them and to enable them to manage their careers, learning and sustain employability throughout their lives. The academy has a statutory duty to secure access to impartial and independent information, advice and guidance on the options available

Aims of CEIAG a) Self Development Young people should be able to understand themselves and the influences on them, to increase their knowledge, develop undestanding and skills relevant to life in a rapidly changing world. To assess their achievements, qualities and skills To present this information as appropriate To use this information for personal development To set career and learning targets To recognise and deal accordingly with influences on their attitudes, values and behaviour in relation to work b) Career Exploration Young people should be able to investigate opportunities in learning and work To understand the nature of work and people s attitude to it To use a variety of sources of careers information To use work experience to improve chances To understand employment trends c) Career Management Young people should be able to make and adjust plans to manage change and transition. To use decision-making techniques To understand and use sources of help To make informed and appropriate choices at To make and manage changes as appropriate

5 To understand job / learning applications and the requirements of interviews To understand rights and responsibilities in the workplace 3. Careers Education and Guidance Careers Education Careers Education helps individuals to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding required to make appropriate choices, to manage transitions in learning and to move successfully into work. Careers Education takes place mainly through work in lessons. Careers Guidance Careers Guidance is a means of enabling individuals to apply the skills, knowledge and understanding they have learned to make appropriate decisions about their future education needs to enable them to move into work. It should be impartial, client centred and confidential. Careers Guidance takes place mainly through individual support. 4.Professional Development Careers Manager is currently studying level 6 Careers information and Guidance. All other staff engaged in appropriate CPD on a need basis

6 5.Student Entitlement ( Careers Education and Guidance (CEIAG) Across the Year Groups) Year 7 and 8 CEIAG is embedded within PSHE. Emphasis here will be on group work within form time and on aspects of developing self-awareness and decision making through targeted assemblies Year 9 CEIAG is embedded within PSHE, incorporating CEIAG, PSHE and Citizenship. Emphasis will be on giving pupils access to future education, employers and training providers. Class work designed specifically to aid students in the selection of GCSE / BTEC options for KS4 is followed by an Option Evening and trips to local Universities Year 10 CEIAG is embedded within PSHE with emphasis on targeted sessions which to help with preparation for Work Experience Year 11 In Year 11 students look at Opportunities at 16, activities such as action planning, job hunting, writing CV s, filling in application forms and interview skills. They are all guaranteed a personal Careers interview and a Post 16 Careers Evening is also held. Connexions also offer careers guidance interviews to a number of potential NEETS (Not in Education, Employment or Training) Post 16 Post 16 students CEIAG is embedded within PSHE. The programme also allows for drop in sessions to assist individuals. Post 16 students also have targeted CEIAG assemblies and are guaranteed a personal Careers Interview. All students are assisted with their future pathways and there is an extensive programme in place to assist with UCAS applications.

7 6. Careers Interviews Careers interviews are conducted by the staff. Destination information is recorded in line with national requirements. An informal drop in session is held once a week for the whole school to access the careers hub Students are free to request an interview at any time and one will be allocated as soon as possible. 7. Information and Resources Careers information and resources are located in the Careers Hub based in sixth form. The careers library is updated on a regular basis to incorporate any new or additional information e.g. University and college prospectuses. In the careers Hub there are IT facilities connected to the school network for programmes such as Fast Tomato you might want to put a short sentence in saying what this is I couldn t remember the details and National Careers Service The Careers Hub is available to students at break and lunchtime. Materials are available on short term loan to students and staff. 8. Monitoring, review and Evaluation The Academy s CEIAG policy and programme will be reviewed on an annual basis, to reflect changing statutory requirements, curriculum demands, and the progression opportunities open to young people. All Students are expected to complete a log book and evaluation of Work Experience placements Staff are expected to complete a visit / phone call to evaluate work experience placements.

8 Careers Manager will arrange suitable interviews with students and track monitor progress. 9. Equal opportunities The Careers Department support the school Equal Opportunities Policy in the following ways: - Equal Opportunities lessons Careful selection of posters and display material By encouraging all students to consider options including non traditional careers / roles By avoiding the use of one gender and gender specific job titles, e.g. using she/he; son / daughter; waiter/waitress By offering as free a choice as possible for Work Experience By making every effort to give girls and boys equal opportunities to speak, offer opinions and answer questions in lessons. By not arranging and by discouraging separate sex groups for group work Equal access to information for all students of all abilities. We recognise that courses and employment are available and suitable for people of varying skills, abilities and personal qualities. We encourage students to consider these aspects when choosing work placements. F.E and H.E courses and employment. If a student does not have the academic ability for the career / course she/he has in mind, we try to help them to identify this and plan accordingly. We emphasise their strengths and what skills they do have. 10. Recording, Assessment and Reporting In year 10, Work experience log books are used for preparation, recording experience, de-brief and certification.

9 Careers action plans are produced by Careers Manager and Connexions advisor following interview. All interview information will become available on google shared drive to all relevant staff such as Year 11 form tutors and Head of Year Parental Links Parents To have the opportunity to speak to Careers Manager by telephone or by appointment To have access to information on Options at 13, 16 and during Post 16 Education, via evening sessions through appointments To receive information about work experience and the opportunity to discuss Work experience issues To access Careers information at all Parents Evening To access Student Finance and UCAS information at a dedicated assembly. 12.
