Industry Partnerships With CREOL Making the Collaboration Work Jim Pearson Special Consultant CREOL, The College of Optics & Photonics Reference: Overcoming Barriers to Collaborative Research, NAS Report on GUIRR workshop; March, 1998
Partnerships What good are they? Accomplish things neither partner could do alone Accomplish things faster, or better, or with fewer resources Build a relationship for future interactions
Deterrents to effective university - industry partnerships Different cultures : Different goals & objectives Different value & reward systems Different time scales for results Insufficient regular and meaningful interaction Intellectual property rights Different operational locations
Actions to Make a Partnership Effective - I Find and emphasize the common objective(s) & interest(s) Understand the fundamental differences & minimize their effects Commit to a long-term relationship & the success of the partner as well as the partnership Communicate, communicate, communicate True for both a Company and the University
Making a Partnership Effective - II Take the initiative Treat the partner as valuable, essential asset Work government funding jointly Work the relationship continuously True for both a Company and the University
Collaboration Mechanisms Sponsored research company or government sponsored Faculty consulting Licensing of patents from university University support for company start-ups Research centers, including governmentsupported Industry consortia like Florida Photonics Cluster Industrial Affiliate programs
Solution: Work with the similar, but different, motivations Industry Learn about forefront developments Leverage limited basic/generic research funds Transfer technology from university Utilize IP for competitive advantage University Learn about needs of real world problems Obtain research funds Educate and place students; transfer technology Publish and invent
Partnership Roles Task CREATION OF KNOWLEDGE Research Invention TRANSFER OF KNOWLEDGE Teaching & Training Education IP Transfer APPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE Product design & development Commercialization Manufacturing Lead Responsibility EQUAL PARTNERS: Full collaboration UNIVERSITY Leads partnership INDUSTRY Leads partnership
Conclusions: University-Industry Partnerships are... Hard work Absolutely necessary for both parties Mutually beneficial and sustainable if Both parties exert leadership to make them work The common objectives are well defined The cultural differences are recognized and constantly worked
Examples of CREOL Partnerships FPCE (24 projects at 5 universities with 20 companies as partners in one or more projects) Townes Laser Institute (Partnership with Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology at Aachen University; support from 12 companies Industrial Affiliates (60 members) Research Partnerships (~25% of annual funding from companies) Spin-off companies using CREOL technology (over 20) Florida Photonics Cluster support
