We re in the healthcare business. If we can t take care of staff health there isn t much hope for anybody. NHS Chief Executive Improving quality of patient care through staff health wellbeing and engagement Dame Carol Black 2014
Simon Stevens, CEO of the NHS said in his inaugural address on 2 April 2014 If like me you believe in a tax-funded NHS you ll want the Health Service to play its part in growing our nation s economy, precisely so that we can sustain public health services for generations to come. To do this, NHS employees will need to be healthy, both mentally and physically, have good well-being, and be fully engaged in their work towards improved outcomes for patients.
Environment Nutrition Physical Activity Innovation Time Shareholders
Our productivity gap is matched by an engagement gap UK output per hour is 15% less than the G7 average. Britain ranks about ninth among the world s top economies for engagement. Conclusive Case for Conclusive Case for NHS hospitals with high staff engagement have standardised patient mortality rates lower (by 5%) than hospitals with medium engagement. Wellbeing! NICE calculates that for a company with 1,000 employees, mental ill health costs about 835,000 per year Cultivating a happy, healthy workforce is crucial to creating a successful organisation.
What prevents us from working or from working well? Common mental health problems Musculo-skeletal problems high prevalence across populations little or no objective disease or impairment most episodes settle rapidly, though symptoms often persist or recur essentially whole people, should be manageable. The workplace and employers organisation of work managerial behaviour and leadership absence of good work Other important reasons long-term conditions mental and physical lack of education and/or skills deprivation, poverty, lack of jobs social or home-related matters. Essential! managerial behaviour and leadership
Managers: Engagement, wellbeing and health Engagement and communication at acute trusts (NHS Staff Survey 2013) 4.0 Employee engagement Communication, senior managers and staff (%) IPA. Meeting the challenge Joe Dromey 2014 Good line management is key to engagement and health. Managers should focus on: effective communication with staff awareness of the issues and the ability to empathise developing open culture with employees able to discuss their problems. Also, learning about mental health enables managers to judge when they need to refer employees to outside help.
A Personal Journey Pilot study demonstrated that a multi component onsite health promotion programme had high NHS staff engagement, a significant impact on improving health and has the potential for NHS cost savings
AHSN Funded Phase 2 AHSN Funding Model rolled across 2 additional NHS Trusts
AHSN Funded Phase 2 Significant improvements in mental and physical health, alongside a significant increase in physical activity (METS per week), were reported at all participating trusts at across the 6-month follow-up. AHSN Funding Model rolled across 2 additional NHS Trusts Simon Stevens sufficiently impressed He came up North!
