Successful completion of the 7 day program will result in an IRCA recognised certificate for each of the two elements. The course will introduce the Service Leaver to the concepts and principles of Quality Management including ISO 9001, the most widely used quality framework in the world, and the principles of Quality Management Systems Auditing from both an internal and external audit perspective. Contact clamb@ctp.org.uk for details. FIRST LINE MANAGEMENT The ILM Level 3 Certificate in First Line Management is designed to give individuals the capability and confidence to lead and manage within a commercial environment providing a solid foundation for aspiring managers to develop their skills and abilities. The first course is being delivered at RRC Portsmouth, starting on 18 October Please contact gtyrrell@ctp.org.uk for more details. APMP The Project Management course at the RTC has been reduced from 3 weeks to 2, with the PRINCE2 element removed. 3 Success Story Pete McCraw After a number of years in the Royal Navy as a communicator, I changed branch in 2001 and joined the RN Police to seek new challenges. I left the service in 2009 as a Regulating Petty Officer, having served 22 years. Throughout my service career I gained many skills including administration, project planning and general personnel management skills, as well as exceptional communication skills. These, alongside my academic qualifications in NEBS, Communications and Leadership, provided a sound base for my future career in the civilian workplace. Make use of the excellent resettlement service offered by the CTP and plan well in advance. I found the prospect of trying to summarise the wealth of experience gained throughout my career, for prospective employers to be a challenge. I signed up for a Career Transition Workshop (CTW) at RRC Uxbridge and I found the support given over the three days there to be invaluable and the CV writing and interview technique elements within the workshop were very useful. Getting feedback on my CV with suggestions of what detail to include, particularly about tailoring each CV to each job application was excellent. Other subjects including Job search and understanding the job market had given me the confidence to move forward. My Career Consultant, Tim Cairns was excellent and a great help; always willing to discuss my options and very supportive during the consultation. For further information about careers within the Security Industry visit: Also speak with your Career Consultant who can help identify training needs you may have in order to get qualified. My research on career opportunities at first had looked a little bleak, but a quick call to Tim reminded me that my previous military experience would stand me in good stead for a security type position; all I needed was a relevant qualification to support my experience. I undertook the Security Supervisor course on offer at RTC Aldershot and although I initially found the course a little long, I now realise it met all my requirements and has provided me with the skills and knowledge to progress into many opportunities. The information was very well presented and the knowledge of the instructors was second to none. I gained my SIA License through doing this course and in the end, it has proved invaluable in securing my current job. I felt ready to move forward with my job search after that, but my initial research produced limited results. I called my CTP Employment Consultant and together we quickly indentified a potential opportunity; I applied immediately and had a response within ten minutes, securing an interview and subsequent employment with MITIE Security; all within one week! I found settling into the new role initially quite challenging, but my appraisals have been positive and as a result I have secured promotion as a Regional Corporate Security Manager, currently seconded to a global blue chip company who are leaders in the design and build of aerospace technology. If I could offer any advice to other Service leavers, it is to make use of the excellent resettlement service offered by CTP and plan well in advance to ensure you use your Graduated Resettlement Time. I lost 9 days, in part because of my failure to recognise the limited time frame you have once signing off. Don t give up hope. My other advice is don t give up hope. I left the service during one of the worst recessions the UK has faced, yet I found and secured work within one week of discharge. When looking at job opportunities, consider the benefits that come with the job, but remember to take into account things like your armed forces pension (if you have one), and other benefits you may already have, as finding a role that offers a similar salary may be difficult. CTP Training & Employment Newsletter Issue 19 July 2010 Page 3
4 Employment Update The CTP remains confident that employers continue to seek to employ Service leavers. Employer registrations and vacancies received by the CTP have both increased and in the first 5 months of this year, over 3,750 leavers, who were supported through their transition by the CTP, have reported they are now in employment. 5 Northern Region Employment Fair My skills and qualifications are applicable to more employers than I realised. The CTP s Northern Regional Team recently held their employment fair at the Pavilions of Harrogate. These events are always greatly received by both the Service leavers and exhibitors who attend and this one was no exception! As ever, military personnel did themselves proud and even the car park attendants commented that every single person coming through the gate were the best people we have ever dealt with. We only wish more people were like that! Over 300 Service leavers attended on the day, some coming from as far afield as Cyprus and Wales. Most of the 50 exhibitors were employers from local and national businesses, seeking to meet potential new employees for their organisations and who value the working ethos of military personnel. Initially it was a bit daunting, but after speaking to a few people, I felt more relaxed and it was really good. Before the event started, our Employment Consultants calculated that there were in excess of 800 job vacancies available in the room. To date, we know of four Service leavers who actually secured jobs on the day, with many more having arranged interviews. Some employers conducted informal interviews in quiet areas of the exhibition hall and CTP career consultants were on hand throughout the day, to give career guidance and review CVs. Our team of employment consultants were also there to provide information about jobs and other career opportunities. I attended the job fair today, and found it most informative, opening up other channels for gaining employment. Along with some regular employer exhibitors, there were a few new ones this year : Paragon Creative of York, who are looking for highly innovative technical staff and were delighted at the numbers they met who not only had the right skills but also the right attitude! Royal Mail and Amazon and some care organisations, were also new exhibitors and all recorded extremely positive outcomes. There was a great deal of interest around the Morgan Hunt stand who recruit for the education and training sectors as well as UBU who recruit for the care sector caring for adults with learning difficulties as well as jobs in the technical and logistics part of the organisation. One attendee who left the Forces almost a year ago and is now looking to change roles, said I had no idea that these job fairs were so good if I had known I would have attended while I was still serving. Feedback Comments and feedback about the content of this newsletter is welcomed and if you have any comments any that you wish to share, please contact Bryan Johnson at bjohnson@ctp.org.uk Check our website for future events We run employment fairs and other career awareness events throughout the year. These are greatly beneficial and allow you to network with potential employers and learn more about different industries and career opportunities available within them.
