PASTORAL CARE SECTION II PASTORAL CONTEXT
302.2 And Pastoral Context Client Population One of the strengths of the ACPE system program is the variety of institutional settings where students learn the art of spiritual care. At each clinical placement, students will be mentored by the staff chaplains and relate to the Director of Pastoral Care. Each student will have an ACPE System Supervisor who will supervise their ministry. In the past, placement sites have included institutions supported by Catholic Charities and Chaplain Partners and currently we are not using any outside placement sites. We have established a placement sites for students in light of special needs or in collaboration with other institutions and we may do so again in the future. St. Vincent Charity Medical Center provides the home base for the ACPE System Program. It is licensed for more than 400 beds in the heart of Cleveland. It is well known for its Bariatric Surgery, Mental Health, Addiction, and Orthopedic Surgery where students are regularly placed. As a center for medical education, ACPE students can participate in a monthly seminar with the internal medicine resident and a monthly hospital wide ethics seminar. Other unique services include the Center for Bloodless Surgery meeting the special medical needs of Jehovah s Witnesses and Rosary Hall which meets the needs of those with addictions. Students have an opportunity to minister to patients in all of these settings. ACPE students at SVCMC have the opportunity to serve an inner city medical center. Normally, students minister for two units at SVCMC and two units at SJMC. Student placements enhance the ministry to patients and staff while providing various learning experiences mentored by staff chaplains. St. John Medical Center is a suburban hospital licensed for 200 beds serving the middle class western communities of Cleveland. There are a number of clinical specialties which include adult and pediatric urgent care, rehabilitation, general medical/surgical units, cardiac care and obstetrics. As a center for medical education, ACPE students can participate in a interdisciplinary seminars. Students have an opportunity to minister to patients in all of these settings. ACPE students at SJMC have the opportunity to serve a suburban city medical center. Normally, students minister for two units at SJMC and two units at SVCMC. Student placements enhance the ministry to patients and staff while providing various learning experiences mentored by staff chaplains. In 2005, a contract was established with Walsh University in North Canton, Ohio to be an accredited Satellite Center, beginning in January Walsh University is a Catholic University founded by the Brothers of Christian Instruction. Walsh University increased the educational resources and learning possibilities for students. They made use of the placement sites Mercy Medical Center. In 2012, it was decided to move the Walsh Satellite to Mercy Medical Center due to decreased enrollment in the Walsh Satellite and an increase in non-walsh Students desiring ACPE. It was agreed that Mercy Medical Center would become the Satellite offering both educational and place opportunities. In addition, Ursuline College has a long term partnership so students can receive academic credit for units of ACPE in the Master of Ministry Program. Mercy Medical Center, a ministry of the Sisters of Charity Health System, operates a 476-bed hospital serving Stark, Carroll, Wayne, Holmes, and Tuscarawas Counties and parts of Southeastern Ohio. Patients come from both the suburban and rural settings. Mercy Medical Center has been named among the Top 50 Best Heart Hospitals by US News & World Report. In addition to medical/surgical units, cardiac and stroke care, Mercy Medical Center operates a 14
hospice where one or two extended students are placed. They offer a wide range of medical services that enhance the learning of students and serve the great Stark County area. Students in the extended program at the MMC Satellite are placed at Mercy Medical Center and Mercy Hospice and mentored by the pastoral care staff. Regina Health Center is an eldercare facility for Catholic religious and laypersons. They offer long-term, hospice and rehabilitation programs to more than 150 patients. Students in the MMC Satellite are placed at Regina and it provides a place to learn ministry to an elderly population. Sr. Donna Mikula, the Director of Pastoral Care is the mentor for ACPE students placed at Regina. The four institutions that are related to the ACPE system program provide four unique settings for ministry. They include inner city hospital ministry at SVCMC, suburban hospital ministry at SJMC, hospice ministry and suburban/rural ministry at MMC and eldercare ministry at Regina Health Center. In 2007, the SCHS moved forward with an initiative in the area of pastoral education to become a ACPE System and offer ACPE throughout the System. This includes Providence Hospitals, a two hospital SCHS institution located in Columbia, South Carolina since There are a number of clinical specialties to include: orthopedics, internal medicine, ophthalmology, emergency medicine, nuclear medicine, maternity care, rehabilitation services, chronic wound treatment and occupational medicine. Providence Hospitals serves the spiritual needs of Providence Downtown and Providence Northeast. In 2008, Providence Hospitals hired a fully certified ACPE Supervisor to establish this newest component to the SCHS ACPE Program. Students in the extended program at the Providence Hospitals are placed at both hospitals and mentored by the pastoral care staff. In 2013, a contract was established with Trinity Community in Beavercreek, Ohio be an accredited Satellite Center, beginning in December Trinity Community is an eldercare facility operated by the United Church of Christ (UCC). Students participate in one extended unit each year and a summer intensive program where they interact with staff and residents And Pastoral Context Environment for Learning SCHS is the new name of the CSA Health System, which originated in France and came to Cleveland, Ohio in The Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine are a mission driven community of religious woman who minister to the underserved. They have established orphanages, education programs, health care, and alcohol/drug addiction recovery programs to further holistic ministries as they continue the healing ministry of Jesus Christ. Today, the SCHS is made up of administrative units, hospitals and long-term health facilities in Ohio and South Carolina. Since 1997, as part of their educational mission, a ACPE system program was conducted as a partnership of two SCHS hospitals: St. John Medical Center and St. Vincent Charity Medical Center. Mercy Medical Center serves as a Satellite Center of St. Vincent Charity Medical Center. The history of the ACPE program began in 1984 at St. Luke s Hospital, which is now closed. As the program matured and gained stability as it offers Level I, II and Supervisory ACPE. ACPE System Center was developed using SVCMC, SJMC and PH as Components with 15
two Satellites: one at MMC and the second at Trinity Community of Beavercreek, Ohio. ACPE staffing has followed a creative model and now includes three ACPE SYTEM Supervisors. As part of their mission the SCHS felt that the ACPE system program should be offered to all the hospitals in their health system. This development continues to further the SCHS and ACPE mission to educate persons to provide spiritual care throughout SCHS and many other institutions where our graduates minister. It is the policy of the SCHS that all people are considered important whether or not they have the resources to pay for their medical care. An environment of care is upheld in each of our settings. This attitude extends to the staff as well, where valuing the contribution of all is a guiding principle. Human dignity and growth are held as important values by all staff. Students considered to an integral part of the Mission, Vision and Values of the partnership. It is understood that students serve the spiritual needs of patients and staff, while learning about themselves as caregivers. Thus, learning to be good caregivers is a goal that the staff and administration support. 16
303.3 Opportunities for Professional Interchange Students have a number of opportunities for professional interchange at this center. Each student is assigned to a unit for no less than six months. During this time they build relationships with the nursing staff, social workers and physicians who care for patients on that unit. Students are encouraged to attend nursing rounds on the unit where they are assigned. The students relate to the Pastoral Care Staff at their assigned sites. Each intern and resident is provided with a staff contact person who serves as a mentor. The pastoral care staffs and residents at each site meet regularly for scheduling, education and mutual support. Once a year, the residents and extended students are invited to attend an annual retreat of SCHS chaplains where they have an opportunity to interact with chaplains in a variety of settings. Students have a number of learning opportunities that focus on different issues each year. The SCHS has a Fall Pastoral Care Retreat. As we are able, students attend conferences in the area that enhance their learning. These opportunities enhance the learning and curriculum. During the residency program at SVCMC and SJMC, pastoral care residents join with medical residents in a monthly Communications Seminar. The monthly seminars are arranged in cooperation with the Chairperson of Medical Education. These seminars provide direct communication between the medical and pastoral care residents. This interdisciplinary educational series provides an opportunity for physicians and chaplains in training to learn about the each other s role healthcare and facilitate greater interdisciplinary communication. A number of didactics are scheduled during each unit to meet the needs of the learning group. Each month students are invited to attend the Zella Hall Ethics Seminars and participate in the quarterly ethics webinars presented by CHA. Presenters have shared topics to include hospice, mental health concerns and other topics. Students are encouraged to attend a variety of seminars. Students experience a rich environment for learning they are encouraged to participate on a regular basis. Below is a sample of recent didactics in : All Components and Satellite 1.
