1 BSc Nursing A) Purpose of the Programme Successful completion of your programme of study provides you with both an academic qualification and a professional qualification. All our programmes that lead to registration as a nurse or midwife fulfill the Nursing and Midwifery Council standards for nurses (NMC, 2010) and midwives (NMC, 2009). All the Faculty s pre-registration nursing and midwifery programmes are jointly validated (approved) by both King s College London and the Nursing and Midwifery Council, thereby assuring students at the point of registration are: Fit for professional standing Fit for academic and professional award Fit for practice and purpose B) Overview of your Programme of Study, Modules of Study & Pre-registration Mandatory Training Each academic or professional module is assessed independently and each has an academic assignment/examination which must be passed in order to complete the module. In addition there is a Pan London Practice Assessment Document (PLPAD) which must be successfully completed and passed. It is a university/nmc requirement that academic and practice outcomes and practice hours must be completed for progression to the subsequent year of the programme/registration (see section 9.7). Mandatory training of basic life support (BLS) and moving and handling (M&H) has to be completed in each year of study. Before your first placement you must complete your BLS and M&H along with safeguarding training, body fluids e-learning, information governance e-learning, digital professionalism e-learning and have DBS and occupational health clearance. First aid and personal safety training are also mandatory for all first year students. Each year you will have yearly updates and the Pre-registration team will inform you what needs to be done at the start of and during years 2 and 3 of the programme. In addition, Insights into other fields of nursing practice, and midwifery practice must be completed as part of the programme to meet with EU/NMC requirements. Other classes relevant to your study as a King s nurse or midwife will be scheduled on your timetable to complement your academic modules. The BSc programmes are divided into three equal parts. The academic and professional practice modules comprising your pre-registration programme are shown below. Each module has a site hosted on KEATS, the university e-learning service, which contains details of module teaching, learning and assessment activities together with other educational resources and module information. In the event of a query about one of the modules you are studying please the module leader.

5 The Faculty will automatically enroll students onto the relevant modules at the start of each academic year. This area on KEATS ( 3) will contain important information regarding mandatory training to be completed as part of your programme. The site will contain the following: Guidance for mandatory training handbook. Compulsory e-learning for basic life support, moving and handling and for midwifery students only, neonatal life support Personal safety theory Safeguarding e-learning. Information governance e-learning. Digital professionalism e-learning. Body fluid exposure e-learning. C) Pre-registration Nursing and Midwifery: Elective Placements An elective placement is an exciting opportunity to experience practice within a variety of clinical settings either nationally or internationally. Students undertaking the BSc programmes are eligible to apply for an optional elective placement. For nursing this will be in their second year of study, and for midwifery their third year. This section of KEATS will contain important information regarding the process and will include the following: Frequently asked questions Elective timeline for your programme and cohort. Elective handbook and placement agreement list. Occupational health guidance for international elective placements. The application process for elective placements requires strong engagement and runs only once for each student cohort. Support and information is available throughout the process from the electives team, but students are expected to undertake most of the organisation of their placement themselves. There are two stages to the process: at the first stage, students are required to identify a rationale and set of learning objectives for a potential placement. The Faculty s Electives Panel then meets to discuss these; subject to approval, students then progress to the second stage where they work independently to set up the proposed placement. Final approval for the elective placement is given at the close of the second stage. To best support the completion of programme requirements students will need to meet certain programme performance criteria prior to final approval of their elective application. An introduction to the elective process together with these criteria, will be given closer to the time of application but will include (at both stage 1 and 2 of the elective process): good programme attendance at theoretical sessions; being up to date with clinical hours and assessments; exemplary professional conduct, and a strong academic profile.
6 Indemnity insurance cover, travel insurance cover (international electives only), relevant immunisations (international electives only) and an HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) pack (international electives only) will also need to be obtained, at your own cost. Further information on elective placements for nursing and midwifery students is available online, here: Queries regarding elective placements should be directed to in the first instance. D) Progression through your Programme The programmes are divided into three equal parts corresponding to the three years of study. To comply with NMC requirements, you must meet all required outcomes from each part of the programme - both theory and practice - before progressing to the next part of the programme (these are referred to as progression points and are shown on your programme plan on your cohort e- learning site). An opportunity for re-assessment is available within each part of the programme, should this be required. Should mitigating/exceptional circumstances apply as per NMC recommendations you will have to meet all required outcomes within twelve weeks of the next part of the programme, but will not be formally progressed to the next part of the programme until all outcomes have been met. Failure to meet required outcomes within the identified period of study will require you to be returned to an earlier part of the programme to complete outstanding outcomes, or to be discontinued from the programme if all assessment attempts have been used. Your academic results impact on whether you can continue in clinical placement. If academic results are released to the student during periods of placement learning and the student has exhausted the number of attempts permitted at an academic module, and does not achieve a pass they will be removed from the practice placement immediately. This does not constitute formal removal from this programme and access to all theoretical modules, and all sources of university support remain available to the student. The formal removal from a programme occurs following the Assessment Board. It is very important that you understand this, so if you require further clarification on this section please speak with a member of the academic staff at the Faculty. E) Teaching Timetable At the start of the programme, you will be allocated to a study group. The study groups will determine your individual timetable, and you will remain in these groups for much of your teaching. Over the programme you may be taught in individual pathway and mixed pathway groups giving you the opportunity to work both outside of and within your speciality. For skills teaching you will normally taught in pathway specific groups. Your programme plan is available on KEATS, the university e-learning service, through the Preregistration Nursing and Midwifery team. Weeks are marked as follows: U = University; P =
7 Placement; RW = Reading week; H = Holiday; E =Exam Week, IS = Independent study. The preregistration nursing and midwifery timetables are available online and also via an app. You will be sent an when this is ready to view for the coming academic year. Teaching may take place on any of King s campuses. Please check the venue for each session prior to starting your journey and allow enough time to arrive before the start of the timetabled session. Please be aware that examinations and mandatory training may be scheduled during reading weeks and therefore you should be available to attend university during these periods. Should you fall behind with clinical practice learning, for example due to sickness, you may be required to complete on your clinical learning and practice assessment during some but not all of your summer holiday period. This is to enable you to meet the progression requirements for the programme.
