1 A Guide to Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust Services for Flexible Workers This guide for Flexible Workers will provide you with information about the different areas of the Trust that you may wish to work, including where each service is based, the roles available in the service and any additional training or experience you might need to work there. As well as providing the Trust with valuable staff in core areas, Flexible Workers can also use the opportunity to gain experience and knowledge in a variety of different services. While you may not be able to work in all areas straight away, the Staffing Solutions team will work with you to identify any training requirements and support you to work across different parts of the Trust. When we receive your Flexible Worker application, the Staffing Solutions team will contact you to discuss the areas that you have the skills to work in and any other areas that you may wish to work in. You can review where you work at any time if you want to expand the services you can work in. You are also not obliged to work in all services in a particular area and can opt out of specific services if you wish. Mandatory training is required for all Flexible Worker positions; in most cases this needs to be completed within 3 months of starting work with us, but some training needs to be completed before you can work. Please get in touch if you need any additional information about training requirements or any of the services featured in this guide. 6 Adult Mental Health Teams (AMHTs) AMHTs provide core mental health services in the community to adults of working age (between years) with mental health problems. These problems can range from schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, postnatal depression and other depressive disorders, to enduring anxiety and personality disorders. The teams give people the support they need to continue a full and active life in the community and work closely with GPs, service users and carers, and other key partners to achieve this. The teams are made up of a number of different staff, including psychiatrists, psychologists, community psychiatric nurses (CPNs), approved social workers, occupational therapists and support workers. 7 Children and Young People s Inpatient Units Children s and young people s inpatient units provide specialist care for young people aged 11 to 18 with acute mental health needs, who cannot be managed safely in the community. Units have on site schools to ensure continuity of education in line with the national curriculum. Working with families is also an essential aspect of the care provided and is key to the treatment of the young people on the ward; support, communication and care of parents is a consistent requirement for staff on the ward. 8 Eating Disorder Inpatient Units The services provide a stepped model of care tailored to individual needs, and they treat patients wanting recovery, those who want to be able to live safely with their eating disorder, and those requiring acute intervention because they have reached a dangerously low weight. They offer a range of programs and evidence-based treatments to assist a patient s return to independent living at the earliest opportunity. The teams work with adults (over 18) and with young people who are approaching their 18th birthday and likely to require support or treatment into adulthood. A key area of working at Cotswold House is supporting patients during meals and snack times. Staff eat with patients at the dining table, and provide support to patients to complete their meals and avoid eating disorder behaviours during mealtimes. The service suggest that new staff should have an induction day with them before working as part of their numbers, in order to gain some useful experience and insight into ways of supporting patients during mealtimes. Job Roles: Band 3 Nursing Assistants and Band 5 Registered Mental Health Nurses Additional Skills: New workers are advised to arrange an induction day with the service before they book shifts Oxford Cotswold House, The Warneford, Old Road, Oxford Headington, Oxford, OX3 7JX 14 bedded mixed unit Wiltshire Cotswold House, Savernake, London Road, Marlborough Marlborough, Wiltshire, SN8 3HL 12 bedded mixed unit Page 8 of 10
9 Older People s Community s The community hospitals provide rehabilitation and palliative care for people who no longer require the services of an acute hospital, but require greater support than currently provided in their home environment. Each hospital has a dedicated team of nurses, HCAs, occupational therapists and physiotherapists and is supported by medical teams. Staff work closely with social services to source care placements and liaise with other care agencies. The services range in size with Bicester Community providing 12 beds and Witney Community providing 60 beds over two wards. The number of beds on each ward can vary, often increasing due to winter pressures. For some patients this may be a brief stay for intensive treatment and support, whereas others who suffer from severe and enduring mental illness may require more frequent admissions. The wards provide assessment and offer a multi-disciplinary approach to the provision of patient care, as well as support to carers and relatives.
