2 Hooper Ward is a locked-door service, allowing stability and security for service users to maximise their recovery and reduce risk levels.

3 Introduction With its location in London s East End, Cygnet Hospital Beckton is ideally placed to provide specialist female-only services with a focus on rehabilitation and community re-integration. The hospital has four different specialist wards which support and care for women aged between 18 and 65. The environment is warm and welcoming. The team work closely with service users to ensure Beckton provides the best therapeutic environment possible. Hooper Ward Hooper Ward is a female psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU) that tailors care to improve service users wellbeing, reduce risk and supports people to fully engage in their recovery. The average length of stay on the ward is around three weeks. All service users are detained under the Mental Health Act. Care and treatment is patient centred and delivered by a specialist multi-disciplinary team. People admitted or transferred to Hooper from the NHS will have a short-term intensive assessment and treatment programme. Once stabilised, they will be transferred back to their home Trust s in-patient services to continue with their recovery journey. There may be occasions when transfer to another Cygnet unit may be agreed with the referring organisation for further specialist care. The ward includes all the features you would expect including en-suite bedrooms, alongside recreational and social space. The service offers a quick turnaround time for referrals, with our audited standard being a full response within 1 hour of receipt of adequate clinical referral information.

4 Care is delivered by a well-established multi-disciplinary team

5 The ward provides individualised care and is a needs-led mental health service, where patients dignity, choice and respect are underpinned by a safe and supportive environment. We work with service users to promote insight and understanding of their care needs. We work jointly with service users, their families and friends (with the service user s permission), ensuring partnership in the decision making for their care and treatment. There is emphasis on the use of relational security, patient safety, recovery programmes and pharmacology in the management of risk, challenging behaviour and enduring mental health disorder. Support and Outcomes A personalised package of care is agreed following an assessment within 72 hours of admission, including full physical healthcare checks. Care is delivered by a well-established multi-disciplinary team including a consultant psychiatrist with considerable experience in care in PICU, a ward doctor, nurses, occupational therapist, psychologist, social worker, occupational therapist and activities co-ordinators. The aim is to repatriate individuals to a suitable service within their local area as quickly as possible. Over 90% of the service users are discharged to open wards. All therapeutic interventions are carefully selected, and adapted to meet the needs of service users. Sessions may take place on or off the ward, in one-to-one or group environments. 7 Hooper Ward achieved AIMS accreditation in 2015 Care Pathways In addition to the pathway of female services available at Cygnet Hospital Beckton, the hospital is also part of a larger network of Cygnet hospitals. Depending on need, and subject to approval from the NHS commissioner, a service user could step down to one of our acute, specialist, or locked-rehabilitation services, if appropriate. Those transferred from prison services either return to prison to continue their custodial sentence or are stepped down to their local acute facility or low secure unit depending on the outcome of their court case and directions from the Ministry of Justice. The mental health clustering tool and NICE guidelines are used to design evidence based interventions for each patient in Hooper. Awards Hooper Ward is a member of National Association Psychiatric Intensive Care Units and has consistently benchmarked with the nation s best. Hooper is an AIMS accredited psychiatric intensive care unit service.
