1 Presidential Inauguration Patrick H e nry C o mmunity C olleg e CHARTING THE COURSE FOR THE NEXT FIFTY YEARS: TOGETHER FORWARD THE INAUGURATION OF ANGELINE D. GODWIN APRIL 25, :00 pm
2 The Educator and the Gardener The educator seeks fertile soil, One ripe with the PH factor. She then plants the seeds, Small kernels of knowledge, Minute morsels of enlightenment, Mustard seeds of acceptance of others. She waters them and waits as they take root Hesitantly, at first, Unsteady as a toddler taking his first solo step sans parents Unsure and perhaps afraid of failure and maybe success. The educator nurtures them regularly with words of encouragement. You can do it; I know you can. Tu peux le faire. Je sais que tu peux. The gentle sun shines its brilliance and radiance Igniting inquiring minds To question tradition To dare exploration To dream of what they can become To climb higher heights. Like the Moabite woman in the fields, She gleans the best from students Offering constructive criticism, Pruning weeds of self-doubt, roadblocks, Building confidence by filling their buckets, so They, too, in turn, can reciprocate. Yet, she does not work alone or in isolation A collaborative effort of worker bees takes place Faculty, staff, administrators, community liaisons Toil tirelessly to mold students into model citizens To help them grow into responsible and contributing members Of the community, Then they can impart the PH factor to others With CC- Consistent Care. - Joyce Staples, Associate Professor of English

5 DR. ANGELINE GODWIN Dr. Angeline Godwin became the third president of Patrick Henry Community College in July Prior to joining PHCC, Dr. Godwin s academic experience includes serving as president, vice president, dean, professor and teacher at various educational institutions, including Ashland Community and Technical College, Jackson State Community College, the University of Southern Mississippi, and Michigan State University. Along with her academic background, Dr. Godwin brings a unique perspective to the position gathered from a number of leadership positions in private industry, allowing her to work hand-inhand with local business leaders and economic developers for the betterment of the community. In addition to her administrative duties, Dr. Godwin keeps a personal touch with students by teaching classes and mentoring a Student Leadership Cabinet. She lives in Martinsville with her husband, Jim Hatten. DR. GLENN DUBOIS In the summer of 2001 the Virginia Community College System welcomed Glenn DuBois to serve as its new chancellor. Since then, he has led the 23-college system through its first and into its second strategic plan, rising to the challenge of enduring both unprecedented enrollment growth and unprecedented cuts in state operating funds. During his tenure, Virginia s Community Colleges have signed groundbreaking guaranteed transfer agreements with more than two dozen public and private universities; become Virginia s leading provider of workforce development services, helped Virginia close headline-grabbing economic development deals; diversified community college funding sources, doubling foundationled private fundraising; and have maintained a tuition rate that is one-third of the comparable rate at Virginia s universities. DuBois received his doctorate in higher education administration, research and policy from the University of Massachusetts. He began his career at a community college in New York. GERALD L. BALILES Governor Gerald L. Baliles, Director and CEO of the Miller Center at the University of Virginia, served as the 65 th Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia. His tenure as governor capped a career in public service that included serving as the attorney general of Virginia ( ) and a member of the Virginia House of Delegates ( ). After leaving public office, he entered private law practice as an international trade and aviation partner in the firm of Hunton & Williams, LLP, headquartered in Richmond, Virginia. Always a champion of education, he founded the Patrick County Education Foundation and served as chairman of the Commission on the Academic Presidency and for the Task Force on the State of the Presidency in Higher Education, for the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges. In addition to eleven honorary degrees, Baliles holds a bachelor s degree from Wesleyan University and a J.D. from the University of Virginia Law School. He became the Miller Center s fifth director in April Founded in 1975, the Miller Center is a nonpartisan public policy institution devoted to studying, examining, and sharing information about American government and the presidency, and promoting discourse and bipartisan consensus on issues of national and international policy. Governor Baliles and his wife Robin reside in Charlottesville, Virginia.
