Overview Cochrane Collaboration CPHG Satellite (PHESA)
Cochrane Collaboration Named in honour of Archie Cochrane, a British researcher In 1979: It is surely a great criticism of our profession that we have not organised a critical summary, by specialty or subspecialty, adapted periodically, of all relevant randomised controlled trials
Cochrane Collaboration International non-profit organisation that prepares, maintains, and disseminates systematic up-to-date reviews of health care interventions
The Cochrane Library

Organisation Review groups Fields Steering group Centres Methods groups Consumer network
Cochrane Centres Support review groups and reviewers within area Promote Cochrane Collaboration Link to Government and other agencies Not a production house for reviews e.g.. South Asian Cochrane Network Australasian Cochrane Centre South African Cochrane Centre Italian Cochrane Centre
Collaborative Review Groups Focused around health problems (51) Produce reviews Editorial base facilitates review process International and multidisciplinary e.g.. Heart Group Skin Group Injuries Group Breast Cancer Group
Clinical vs. public health interventions Clinical Individuals Single interventions Outcomes only (generally) Often limited consumer input Quantitative approaches to research and evaluation Public health Populations and communities Combinations of strategies Processes as well as outcomes Involve community members in design and evaluation Qualitative and quantitative Health promotion theories and beliefs
Public Health in the CC 1996: Health Promotion Field (based in UK and Canada) : Health Promotion and Public Health Field (2000+ Australia) 2007: Joint editing role on PH titles with EPOC 2008 (mid-april): Public Health Review Group registered Contact database 442 members, from 48 different countries (incl 23 DCs)
Cochrane Public Health Review Group (2008) LOCATION: The Victorian Health Promotion Foundation (VicHealth), Victoria Australia Coordinating Editor: Professor Elizabeth Waters RGC: Jodie Doyle Knowledge Translation and Support Fellow: Rebecca Armstrong TSC: Ruth Turley (Cardiff University) Editors: Professor Margaret Whitehead Professor Mark Petticrew Dr Laurie Anderson Assoc. Professor Maureen Dobbins Dr Omar Abdulwadud Dr Alan Shiell (Economics Ed) Dr Sreekumaran Nair (Statistics Ed) Dr Robin Christensen (Statistics Ed) Dr Philip Baker (Feedback Ed) Dr Ruhi Saith (DC Ed)
CPHRG Topic Scope Population-level public health interventions Generally interventions targeted to address the distal determinants of health and affect material factors and social structural conditions, such as poverty, social exclusion, racism and discrimination, housing and social environments
Proposed topic categories INCOME DISTRIBUTION and FINANCIAL INTERVENTIONS EDUCATION (in consultation with Campbell Education Coordinating Group and Cochrane DPLP Group where appropriate) PUBLIC SAFETY (in consultation with Campbell Crime & Justice Coordinating Group and Cochrane Injuries Group where appropriate) HOUSING and THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT WORK ENVIRONMENT EMPLOYMENT SOCIAL NETWORKS/SUPPORT FOOD SUPPLY/ACCESS TRANSPORT NATURAL ENVIRONMENT PUBLIC SERVICES and HEALTH SYSTEMS
Examples of review topics Housing improvements to improve health outcomes for adults and children Conditional Cash Transfer Programs, geographically targeted towards poor villages to improve health outcomes Provision of scholarships to economically vulnerable students to improve academic and health outcomes Community-led advocacy to improve road safety around schools Pricing policies to increase healthy food choices Community-led advocacy to eliminate hazardous chemicals in local soils Interventions to Improve Community Food Security
CPHG Satellite- Why? To generate wider global representation for the CPHG. To attract and mentor reviewers from non represented regions. To generate reviews relevant and required in addressing problems of LMIC s. To create wider evidence pool of effect of public health intervention in LMIC s.
Why in India? a) The presence of two members of the CPHG editorial board (Sree & Ruhi Saith) b) The setting up of a number of public health training institutions c) Many institutions willing to support the initiative
Outcome of Exploratory meeting There was unanimous support for a CPHG satellite Initial proposed activities of the satellite are a) Capacity building and training (modules on evidence based public health, knowledge translation systematic reviews) b) Identifying few questions relevance to the region and trying to get reviews off the ground for these questions.
Public Health Evidence South Asia The satellite has been registered; located at Manipal University (supported by an endowment Chair Sree) Situated within the broader umbrella of PHESA Evidence synthesis (systematic reviews). Primary research (Including methodological development). Knowledge translation (i.e. linking evidence to policy).
The way forward. Challenges Sustainable funding Identification of mentors and mentees Initiating sustainable training programme Identifying and networking stakeholders Establishing viable links with other countries and organisations in the region. Ensuring complementarity and not duplication
The way forward. Your ideas? Your participation? reviewer, review appraiser, review user, mentor, mentee, financial support, partnership Further details/mailing list contact
