Sample test questions: 2. College Applications Submit your college application EARLY IN THE FALL OF YOUR SENIOR YEAR. ****** COLLEGES PREFER ON-LINE APPLICATIONS****** When you apply on-line or by paper copy, unless the school advises you differently, you MUST send a transcript to the schools that you are applying to. (Transcripts can be requested through the counseling office (First one is free - $2.00 for each additional) or you can send them directly from your account) YOU MUST ALSO SUBMIT A FINAL TRANSCRIPT ONCE GRADES ARE POSTED (end of May) (Again, transcripts can be requested through the counseling or you can send them directly from your account) IT IS YOUR RESPONSBILITY TO REMEMBER TO ORDER AND SEND A FINAL TRANSCRIPT (THIS IS NOT DONE AUTOMATICALLY) Some colleges and scholarships will request a recommendation from a teacher and/or counselor. You must give your teacher and/or counselor at least two weeks notice if you need a recommendation. WATCH YOUR DEADLINES. There is a form in the back of this packet that you will need to complete and turn into your teacher and/or counselor when requesting a recommendation letter. Absences for college visits are unexcused. Students may fill out the Senior College Visit form in the Attendance Office when they plan to visit a prospective college or university, and it is the student s responsibility to inform his/her teacher in a advance of the absence. 4
5 College Admissions Glossary of Terms Regular Decision: Submit an application by a specified deadline and receive a decision by a specified date. Rolling Decision: This means that once an application has been submitted and all necessary credentials have been received, the applicant will be notified by letter of an admission decision. Qualified students are accepted until classed are filled. Please check with the colleges of your choice deadlines vary from school to school. Early Action: Students who apply under a college s Early Action Plan receive a decision earlier than the standard response date BUT are NOT required to accept the admission offer or to make a deposit prior to May 1. Check with individual colleges to determine if the college you are applying to offers an early action plan. Early Decision: Allows you to apply early and get an admission decision from the college well in advance of the usual notification date. There is a catch. Early decision plans are binding, which means if you apply as an Early Decision candidate, you agree to attend the college IF they accept you and offer you an adequate financial aid package. If you are accepted by your first choice college, you must withdraw all other applications. COLLEGE ESSAY TIPS Be unique Let your personality shine through Proof-read, Proof-read, Proof-read Let someone else (parent, mentor, teacher) read for appropriateness or mistakes If a topic is provided, be sure not to stray stay on topic Let your essay be the one that the reader wants to read again AND MOST OF ALL. If the college does not want a teacher recommendation, DO NOT include one. 5

8 What is a top score / national average? How is the test scored? What is you miss a question? What is the test structure? What is the content? SAT vs. ACT SAT 2400 is perfect 1500 is the national average points per section, added together for a combined score You lose ¼ point for each incorrect answer, so don t guess blindly Ten Sections: 3 Critical Reading, 3 Math, 3 Writing, and 1 experimental. The experimental section is masked to look like a regular section Math: Up to 9 th grade basic geometry and algebra II Reading: sentence completions, short and long critical reading passages and reading comprehension Writing: an essay, and questions testing grammar, usage, and word choice ACT 36 is perfect 20 is the national average 1 36 points per subject, averaged together for a composite score. There is no penalty for guessing, so don t leave any blank Five Sections: English, Math, Reading and Science, & Writing. An experimental section is added to tests on certain dates only, and is clearly experimental Math: up to trigonometry Science: charts & experiments Reading: four passages, one each of social science, natural science, prose fiction, and humanities English: stresses grammar Writing: an essay 8
