1 Computer Information Systems Technology Instructional Faculty Consortium Committee Monday, April 18, :30 4:00pm Building H, Auditorium Macon, GA Meeting Agenda Sign in and Welcome 9:30 10:00 George Schramm & Jim Poarch Jim Poarch and George Schramm welcomed all members in attendance. Jim reviewed the agenda with the group and then turned the meeting over to the first presenter. Presentations 30 minutes each: 10:00 11:30 Using Virtualization as a Tool Patrick Riley Patrick Riley gave a presentation on how virtualization can be useful when teaching network classses, operating system classes and security classes. He demonstrated VMWare to the group and briefly discussed the VMWare Academy. Dreamspark for Dummies Dwight Watt Dwight Watt discussed MSDN and DreamSpark which are two resources available to us through a state agreement with Microsoft. MSDN, formally MSDNAA, provides us with volume licenses keys to use in our CIS labs. It also provides us with single use keys for certain software. DreamSpartk Premium is the tool that allows students to download the operating systems and development software for free. Dwight demonstrated how he contacts the students at his college. He will share his presentation on the listserv and offered help to those who need it. Dwight also reported there is a DreamSpartk.com site that is available to all student with an EDU address however its offerings are much more limited that the DreamSpark Premium. Engaging Students with Apps Terry Hand Terry Hand presented on several apps that are available to help in the classroom. A sampling of those are: LanSchool which allows an instructor to view the monitors of all computers in the classroom Socrative that allows you to poll students as you teach Ninite which is a one stop shop for downloads Terry will share his presentation on the listserv as well. General Session 11:30 12:30 Jim Poarch/George Schamm George Schramm reported on several items of interest: Last year Tech Associates of GA held a Health IT Hack-a-thon. TCSG will participate in that again this year. That may be a good opportunity for our students to participate. Look for information on that to come out soon. Also look for a link to a survey which is primarily about logistic programs but will also be asking questions to learn what influences students to choose a certain major. George encouraged us to share this with our students so we can learn more about why students choose the majors they do. If a school gets a new employee, send their address to George to be included in the CIS listserv. There is a steering committee which is examining the COMP1000 course. Currently the requirement is that each program must get basic computer competencies in one of three ways: 1. Take COMP Take an institutionally developed course such as a first year student class 3. Weave the competencies in to an occupation program course The steering committee sent out a survey about the COMP1000 course and received over 500 responses. It is expected that some changes may be made to the COMP1000 course as a result. Breakout room assignments were made so that after lunch, attendees would report to the program breakout sessions.

Each member introduced themselves. We talked about COMP One school mentioned that they are offering COMP Everyone was in agreement that COMP 1000, COMP 1500 or COMP 2000 should be required for Computer Support Specialists. Laree Thomas brought up the need for an Intro to Apple course. This was discussed. Some schools have instructional segments that introduce Apple use in their A+ courses. The new COMPTia A+ certification was discussed. The new A+ certification contains simulations and there are questions about Linux and Networking. Eddie stated that there is a COMPTia Conference in Orlando Florida that would be great for everyone to attend. Several courses were discussed CIST Several instructors are not happy with the CIST 2921 IT Analysis, Design & Project Management course or available books. We talked about the possibility of creating a new course with more emphasis on Project Management. That was tabled for now. COMP 1000 and Advanced Office courses Some instructors are unhappy with SNAP. Several schools reported positive reviews using SimNet. CIST 1135 vs CIST Many schools are teaching CIST 1135 in the place of CIST Others are anticipating the switch. CIST 1130, CIST 1135, CIST 1122, and CIST 2122 Instructors discussed software used for these courses: TestOut, CertBlaster, MeasureUp. Most were happy with TestOut. When we convene to the Wrap-Up meeting, it was recommended that we ask when schools plan to move to Windows 10.

CIST 2603 will be a 3 credit hour class with 1 hour of lecture and the rest of the time a combination of Lab 2 and Lab 3. Coreqs and Prereqs for CIST 2603 were discussed at length. The group settled on CIST 1601 as a prereq and CIST 2601 and CIST 2602 as coreqs. The information about Centers of Academic Excellence was shared with the Cybersecurity group. The state clarified for the Cybersecurity IFCC that coreq and prereqs can be added at the local level and that conversations with Registrars and Deans can be had. The presidents have put into place a set of cut scores. However those are subject to change in the future as time will help evaluate whether they are too high or too low. Some schools are already using Accuplacer; others will be following suit. Some schools are using the Attendance module with Banner v9. It quickly allows you to take attendance and also generates s to the student about their attendance. The attendance module is a nice tool for the retention personnel at the schools. Taking attendance is not mandatory at each school and it is unknown if it will be in the future. Attendees were reminded that pre-requisite / co-requisite set by the state standards are the minimum. A college can set additional pre / co s for their students. George Schramm offered to talk to local deans and registrar about this if needed. The meeting adjourned at 4:00pm.
Alysen Heil (Athens Tech) was unable to attend because of weather, so Dr. Hicks, Wilhelmina (Central GA) agreed to take minutes for the meeting.
