5 Sgt. Dave Hendrix President July, 2015 The Captain s Desk Captain Fletcher was unable to provide an article for this edition of the newsletter. July, 1865 The 1 st Sergeant s Journal Men of Company K, All men of Company K are ordered to report no later than 10:00am on July 11th at our summer quarters east of Fort Brooke where we will continue to prepare for the fall campaign. It is of the utmost importance that all members show up, ready and prepared to drill. I will be having breakfast at the local eatery across the street from camp prior to drill should anyone care to join me for that. I plan on arriving for breakfast at approximately 8:30. 5

6 Our Corporals have been placed for the coming campaign. They are as follows: Cpl. Burt Reynolds. Cpl Reynolds will be responsible for the functioning of the camp. His duties will include maintaining camp safety, maintaining the military appearance of the camp, establishing wood and water details and seeing that those details are completed, maintaining fire-pit safety, disciplining any soldiers who may be drunk and disorderly, seeing to the security of the quartermaster tent. In camp, Cpl. Reynolds authority is only superseded by Sgt. Hendrix, Capt. Fletcher, and myself. His word is law and all would be wise to adhere to it. Cpl. Dennis Clift and Cpl. Robert Howard. Corporals Clift and Howard will be responsible for seeing that all new recruits are trained in basic military knowledge including manual of arms, forming the company, right/left face, inspection, right/left dress, etc (school of the soldier). They are also responsible for making sure new recruits are proficient at the loading sequence, firing commands, rifle safety, and how to clean their rifles. The corporals will also be responsible for maintaining the stability and safety of the men in their sections of the line. On the field, their authority is only superseded by Sgt. Hendrix, Capt. Fletcher and myself. Their word is law. Anyone refusing to follow the orders given by Corporals Clift or Howard will be placed on report and will receive the most severe company punishment possible. It was with great sadness and reluctance that Captain Fletcher accepted the resignations as corporal of Russell Mouser and Manny Tran. Both Russell and Manny served for many years and many campaigns and did so with excellence. We are a better company today because of their diligence and sacrifice. A grateful company salutes you both. With My Highest Respect, 1st Sgt. Van Leuven July, 2015 The Quartermaster s Report A Quartermaster s job is never done. Take it out of storage, clean it, polish it so it shines, sew it together and then reorganize the storage. I am also into the third company rifle, breaking down the lock plate, brushing out rust, oiling and then put it together again. The gift rifle we received from Dennis Clift is repaired. The cam that controls the full cock and half cock on the hammer needed to have the flats for the positions filed out. The metal tends to flare with age and makes a rounded surface on the cam flat. During our down time everyone needs to look at their equipment. Oil up the leathers and shoes, put a few extra stitches in the buttons, restock your rifle cleaning kit, get powder and caps and pour a bunch of rounds so you are not rushed when the season starts rolling again. Highly suggested that you look at your food stocks in your camp travel box. Anything stored out in the heat of the garage tends to get lively. My beef jerky had white mold spots on it and a can of spam was bulging on the sides. When you are far from home and supplies, it might be tempting, but strange molds and botulism is not your friend. Even Georgia moonshine cannot kill it. I still collect the first day covers from the USPS and ebay has an excellent selection for the older ones such as the centennial and earlier. I was really impressed with the story of Phoebe Pember who organized the best and largest Civil War Hospital in Richmond. Her struggle to do it was monumental. Nothing worse than fighting with bureaucrats for money and supplies when they are in short supply. The sad tendency is that once soldiers are wounded or destroyed in body and soul, they are an afterthought in the budget. 6

10 Company and Battalion Meeting Minutes Company Meeting; June 15th at Veteran's Park Call to Order by Dave Hendrix. Dave recognized Steve and Jodi Brown for their years of friendship and service to Company K. Dave reported that the company insurance for 30 members has been paid to the battalion. Discussed that since the 150th cycle is concluded that is changing to more small local and living history events. Keith Van Leuven read a letter by General Jessee discussing how he sees reenacting for the future. Gary Newman reported that Florida Reenactors Online is now back on line. Discussed the Gainesville event in August and decided to participate in the event and conduct our August drill while there. It was decided that we will also have a September drill at Veteran's Park on Sept. 12. Richard Sanchez reported on the Egmont Key event and we will once again support the event in November. We will place a Company K brick on the island and a check was given to Richard. He will advise us when it is ready to be placed so we can have representatives on the island to participate. Dave discussed doing a living history event at Veteran's Park. The company voted to support and committed to the event. Sam Clift stated that the Boy Scouts are interested in helping. Skip stated that we should reinstitute corporal s call-down list to increase communication about and participation at events. Treasurer's Report was given by Dennis Clift. Reported the company is in good shape financially and as such are able to maintain all of our responsibilities. Quartermaster's Report was given by Gary Newman. Gary reported he has torn down, cleaned and repaired all of our company rifles. All other gear is accounted for and in good shape. Motion was made to purchase a case of powder and the motion was approved. Medical forms, recruitment flyers and training manuals were distributed. Meeting was adjourned. Battalion Meeting; June 27th at Dade Battlefield Park July 01, 2015 Ft. Brooke, Florida Gentlemen, This report contains the minutes of the Florida Battalion Annual Meeting. 10

11 The meeting was called to order by Col. Bowman at 10:12 AM. Prayer by Chaplin Howerton Company reports; 1st Co. 2nd Sgt Hendrix--Approx 30 members, low turnout this year at events. They do several small local events. 2nd Co. Capt Welch--OK year...good turn at national events, able to field a company at Appomattox. 3rd Co. Lt. Vaughn--30 members, several younger men with problems of life getting in way of reenacting. 150th of Natural Bridge over...a very large task, large success...genealogical digs going on now. 4th Co. Capt Short--Good turn outs...40 men...new officers taking over beginning of next year...will be Capt. Pinkstaff and Lt. Cook. 5th Co. Capt Kearney--Company healthy...large effort for Appomattox. Hope to do one march at every national event. Chaplin Paul Howerton--service when needed at all Battalion events Sgt. Maj. Tindle--everything ok Safety Lt. Adkins--tins in all cartridge boxes...more attention to 1/2 cock pos during inspections Adj. Lt. Evans--1st Sgts need to step up reports etc... Brigade Lt. Col. Statzer--Ins paid...$ in treasury Col. Bowman report--low participation this year due to health. Thanked all staff for stepping up to tasks. Bad News...More cancer was found last week..must undergo more treatment..we all gave our continued support. Chaplin gave a prayer. A vote was taken and all voted to keep Col. Bowman our Battalion Commander. Discussed future of hobby and best ever events.. LUNCH Event Schedule;;; 1. Ft. Clinch Oct 10&11..Max effort for battalion attendance..school of NCO, and Officer..Training schedule will be set up..capt Short will be glad to provide kits for new recruits 2.Brooksville 3.Olustee 4. Natural Bridge 5.Secession Garrison 6.Resaca Capt Short reported setting up a training weekend at Gold Head State Park.
