USTAR Vision: Build a robust innovation ecosystem in the State of Utah. USTAR Mission: USTAR s mission is to accelerate the commercialization of science and technology ideas generated from the private sector, entrepreneurial and university researchers in order to positively elevate tax revenue, employment and corporate retention in the State of Utah Key USTAR TASKS: 1. Support technology entrepreneurs and Innovators through training, funding, incubator and accelerator programs 2. Broker technology transfer by connecting capital, management and industry 3. Address market gaps in Utah's technology ecosystem 4. Strengthen Utah research capacity.

5 SBIR-STTR ASSISTANCE CENTER USTAR s SSAC is a statewide resource providing qualified Utah businesses assistance and insights into all the elements of the SBIR-STTR process. The SBIR and STTR programs are the largest source of seed funding with more than $2.5 billion dollars invested annually. Working with USTAR s SSAC, the chances of winning increase to more than 25% (the national average is 14-17%). The SSAC offers assistance with: Searching and matching your concept with agency solicitations Finding a champion on the inside Editing and writing assistance Submission Workshops and trainings Registrations with agencies Identifying gaps and solutions
6 U S TA R I N C U B AT I O N E N T E R P R I S E Tech Incubators: As part of the state-wide effort, USTAR manages two technology incubators to assist start-up companies in maturing and commercializing their technology by providing access to specialized equipment to serve life science and aerospace/defense technology sectors. USTAR focuses on providing support to early stage startups in developing their minimum viable products, proof of concept, prototyping, product validation, product development, and connecting research with industry and funding. Core Facilities: USTAR established two state-of-the-art research buildings which provide research space, core facilities and specialized equipment for prototyping and fundamental research. These facilities are available to both university researchers and commercial partners.

8 NEW COMPETITIVE FUNDING PROGRAMS in FY17 Technology Acceleration Program (TAP) Pre-seed fund for technology development Primarily start-up companies Industry Partnerships Program (IPP) Address technology gaps for Utah Industry Matching funds for research to address the gap USTAR Technology Acceleration Grants (UTAG) Competitive funding for technology prototyping and development Evaluation includes market analysis and technology feasibility Science & Technology Initiation Grant (STIG) Available to university researchers for precursor organizational activities required to pursue larger, more commercially-oriented federal grants Provides competitive funding for interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary teams for initial experimentation and data generation to compete for large federal R&D grants or industry contracts
9 TARGETED TECHNOLOGY SECTORS FOR FY17 PROGRAMS Automation and Robotics/Internet of Things- provides engineering solutions for simple and complex industrial applications. Aerospace- areas for research include aerodynamics, materials, autonomy or artificial intelligence. Advanced Materials- include methods of developing, manufacturing or applying synthetic or advanced materials to improve the human/environment interaction. This includes precision manufacturing, new materials, carbon composites and 3D printing advances and outdoor product technology such as climate control, solar technology, water purification, sports, and recreation equipment and textiles. Big Data- term for data sets that are so large or complex that data processing applications are inadequate. Challenges include analysis, capture, data curation, search, sharing, storage, transfer, visualization, querying and information privacy. Energy, Clean Tech and Natural Resources- encompasses a diverse range of products, services and processes that harness renewable and nonrenewable materials and energy sources to dramatically reduce the use of natural resources, cut or eliminate emissions and waste and provide options for efficient energy storage. Life Sciences- includes scientific advancements that focus on improving the quality and standard of life. This includes but is not limited to medical device development, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, diagnostic, agriculture, genetics and healthcare IT.
10 TECHNOLOGY ACCELERATION PROGRAM (TAP) PURPOSE: Accelerate the development of science and technology companies, or to mature a new technology within an existing company. This work can include, but is not limited to R&D, proof of concept, product validation, and product development. 11 ELIGBILITY Company must be Utah-based TAP proposals should align with the targeted industry sectors identified by the USTAR governing authority Proposed technology for TAP funds must be at a technology readiness level (TRL) of 3-5.

13 UNIVERSITY TECHNOLOGY ACCELERATION GRANTS (UTAG) PURPOSE: support research and development of specific technologies that have significant commercial potential but need additional development before they can be spun out from the university setting. This funding addresses an innovation ecosystem gap between federal research dollars and angel investment, the valley of death. 14 UNIVERSITY TECHNOLOGY ACCELERATION GRANTS (UTAG) Provides competitive funding to University researchers for commercially oriented technology development programs. Proposals must be for technology development between TRL 2-5. All proposals must include a commercialization plan. Open to any non-profit Utah college or university employee Teams can be formed from multiple universities, but USTAR funding must stay within Utah
15 INDUSTRY PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM (IPP) Partner industry stakeholder with university researcher to address specific industry technical gap. The program is open to companies that have a substantial presence in Utah. A cost-share is required by the industry partner. Companies identify their gap, USTAR serves as a match maker with university researchers. Ongoing application process open for proposals 15 October 2016 FY17 budget - $2.5M
16 SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY INITIATION GRANT(STIG) Grants to university researchers to support the development of data, conduct proof of concept experiments or other precursor research activities required to pursue larger, commerciallyoriented grants. The goal of STIG is to make Utah s proposals for external research funding more competitive and promote interdisciplinary and cross-university collaboration. Ongoing application process will open mid-october Matching funds are required. FY17 Budget $200k
