1 The Magnolia Telegraph Newsletter of Albert Sidney Johnston 2060 Chapter United Daughters of the Confederacy March, 2017 Robin Terrazas, President Robin s Report Every 3 rd Thursday of the month I enjoy seeing you at our luncheons and hearing from our speakers! Thank you for being there to share in these experiences. And for those who have been unable to attend, we miss you! Behind the scenes, the board has been working very hard to help our chapter meet the goals of our organization. In doing so, we are reaching out and creating new relationships. One of these new relationships is with the Veterans Home in Floresville where we, as a chapter, can more directly support our veterans. Please see more details as found in the newsletter. Another exciting new relationship is with the new owners, Robin and Keith Muschalek, of Polley Mansion. This is a historic antebellum home built by Joseph H. Polley; one of the 300 original Texas families. The home hosted Robert E. Lee on a number of occasions. On Sunday, March 5th the chapter presented the owners a First National Confederate Flag at their open house in Sutherland Springs near La Vernia. If you have not already contacted representatives regarding support of HB 1359, please take immediate action. Sincerely, Robin Terrazas, President Confederate Monuments and Markers By 1 st Vice President Jean Lane Spring Is In the Air! Ladies, it is that time of year that most of us feel the need to get out and about to enjoy our lovely Texas weather. Please remember, we encourage all of you as you hit the road to stop at the sites that have confederate markers and/or memorials, photograph them, mark their locations and submit them to me, as outlined below. All sites must be Confederate or Confederate-related. Cemeteries: Only a Confederate Cemetery or a Confederate section of a cemetery will qualify. Homes: Only if used for some function by Confederate forces during the War or currently used as a museum with Confederate artifacts. Photo(s) of the marker and surrounding area MUST be included (you do not have to provide a hard copy photo, a jpeg will be ok). Indicate the location and fill out the form that relates to this (contact me for the form) I

3 will also send you a sample of one that was completed and approved. I will then gather and forward to our Texas Division point of contact. This is one of many activities that UDC chapters are recognized for. We can revisit the same site(s) each year and submit with updated photo(s) and form. James White of Woodville. The text of the bill is available on this web page. Additionally, you can register with this site which will track the bill through the house and senate and report to you the progress. We can not, as a chapter participate in politics, but as individuals -- please contact your legislators to encourage them to support this bill. If you are not sure who your legislators are, this website will give you the information you need to contact the correct people. Welcome to Our Newest Members Lalaney Dambeck and Sally Forester received their certificates of membership from Registrar Carla Chagaris and President Robin Terrazas in January and February respectively. Welcome, Ladies!

4 Meeting Highlights In January, Flem Rodgers owner of Aycock Crews Bed and Breakfast in the National Historic District of East Columbia, Texas, spoke to us about the Sugar Plantations of Brazoria County. He displayed many of the tools used in the sugar mills. Keith Muschalek. a native Texan and 27 year army veteran as well as a major history buff, was our speaker in February. His topic was J. Polley: The Man and His Home. Members were all invited to attend an open house and book signing on Sunday, March 5 th. Chapter President Robin Terrazas was on hand to present a First National Confederate Flag to the owners Keith and Robin Muschalek. Historian, Cathy Sadler is sharing some great items with us. In January she presented a report on This Day in Georgia with excerpts from a letter a soldier wrote to his father from Vicksburg, and a second report on Military Discipline. In February her report included Musicians, Music and Morale, along with another episode of This Day in Georgia.

5 Supporting our Veterans by Sandy Barsun, Chairman Patriotic and Benevolent Activities Frank M. Tejeda State Veterans Home Floresville, Texas ASJ-2060 UDC has adopted this veterans home to help support some of the activities that are provided for the residents. Bingo is held several time a week, so there is need for lots of prizes. Members are asked donate one or more of the following at each of our upcoming meetings. Cans of any flavor soda (no diet). Chocolate candy bars of any kind. Sweet cakes like Honey Buns, Cupcakes, Ding Dongs, Twinkies, Ho Ho s, Little Debbie s, etc. (1 or 2 in a single package). We have signed up to provide a birthday cake for the months of February, June, and October. A $2 donation at the February, May, and September meetings will help us purchase cake and ice cream Donations of party plates napkins, and maybe some balloons would also be welcomed. Easter is a big project for the Home. They host an Easter Eggs Hunt for the entire community and need donations of many, many, plastic eggs with candy. It was suggested that they be filled with mini chocolate wrapped candy like the Milky Way, etc. The eggs must be taped and brought to the March 16th meeting. There are 164 residents including six (6) women. I was told they like fun T-shirts, sizes L and XL and baseball caps. Confederate Decoration Day April 30, 2017 is Confederate Decoration Day at the Confederate Cemetery. The speaker will be John C. Perry, author of Myths and Realities of Slavery. Mark your calendars and plan to participate. Yearbooks If you have paid your dues (January 30, 2017 was the deadline) and do not yet have a yearbook, they are available at each chapter meeting, OR you may send a $2.00 check to Treasurer Jeannette Kirts, 2618 Lake Altair, San Antonio, TX , to have one mailed to you.

They are $12 from 2 nd Vice President Loretta Smith. The larger pin is no longer approved to be worn on your ribbon! Member News Several of our members have been ill or dealing with medical issues. We want to remember them and offer support. Some are Theresa Gold, Martha Sweeney, Monica Hague, Patricia Peternana, and Jeannette Kirts. If there are others, we apologize for the omission.
