1 FORWARD Newsletter #19, December 2017 The official newsletter of the 2nd/14th Light Horse Regiment (Queensland Mounted Infantry) Association Dear Association Members, it is almost the end of what has been another eventful year for the Association. Your committee has organised the annual 41 Club BBQ on the 11th November, the Black Hat dinner on the 25th August, motor bike rides and our participation in the Anzac Day parade. Additionally the Association was privileged to get VIP seating for the Freedom of Entry to Brisbane parade conducted by the Regiment on 28th October. The Association was represented in May at Boer War commemoration ceremonies in Brisbane and Canberra when the National Boer War memorial was unveiled. The Association was also represented at the annual RAAC Corporation AGM in Puckapunyal 13th-14th October. Unfortunately not all Association activities were well attended. To give you early warning and to plan your attendance this newsletter contains the proposed events program for the Association in I encourage you to attend as many functions as possible. The committee will in return ensure you receive adequate warning and details well before each function. The only reward for the hard working members of the committee is full attendance at functions which is indicative of a thriving Association. This leads me to the committee membership. Many on the committee are due for a change in 2019 including my role as President. We are short a Vice President, assistant secretary and welfare officer. Our regulatory officer (Colin Bunker) is on a long journey of recovery after major surgery. While the committee members are very willing hands, they need some R & R occasionally. If you want to nominate for any position of the committee I strongly encourage you to do so. You will receive my full support and be eased in to the duties gradually. Sadly no nominations could mean the Association will flounder. The celebrations recognising the 100th year anniversary of the Charge at Beersheba are now finished. Finally let me publically acknowledge and thank my committee for a job well done in I personally greatly appreciate their support. I am assured that all members of the Association equally appreciate their tireless efforts. 2 Page 2 BLACK HATS & FRIENDS DINNER By Phil Lilliebridge Friday 25th August, Mark Donaldson VC Room, Kedron Wavell Services Club Again this year our dinner was held with invitations going out to those who had served or were currently serving in RAAC units, regardless of Corp, unit or rank, their families, partners and friends to attend our annual evening of fellowship and catch up. Thirty-one members and guests attended the evening that again proved to be an opportunity for catch-up with old friends and an opportunity to meet new ones. There was a good cross-section of ex-regimental members, other unit members and visitors. The raffle winners table led by Dean Chappel Members of the "Tank" Corps were well represented Interstate attendees Wayne Higgins and Chris Monsour with Jason and Karen Schurr Entertainment during the evening was provided by Mon Che singers, under the leadership of Leanne Piggott, with the young ladies providing vocal interludes with songs from the 20 s to 40 s eras with costumes to match; again they provided an enjoyable and entertaining addition to the night. Mon Che have been regulars at various events held at Kedron Wavell Services Club beginning when they were students at Wavell State High School a few short years ago. 3 Page 3 THE CHARGE AT BEERSHEBA By Graeme Nicholas Background On the 31st October 1917 the Australian Light Horse was engaged in a battle that has been noted in the history books as the greatest charge of the Light Horse. This charge took place some 60kms south of Jerusalem at a town called Beersheba. The battle was part of a wider British Empire offensive collectively known as the 3rd Battle of Gaza. The final phase of the battle was the now famous mounted charge of the 4th Light Horse Brigade comprising the 4th, 11th and 12th Light Horse Regiments. Commencing at dusk, the brigade stormed the Turkish defences and seized the strategic town of Beersheba. The capture of Beersheba enabled British Empire forces to break the Ottoman line near Gaza. In the months leading up to the end of October, Turkish troops occupied a 60km defensive line between Gaza on the coast and Beersheba to the east. Two previous attacks on Gaza had failed. A new commander, General Allenby, an experienced Cavalry commander took personal charge of the troops in the field and planned the capture of Gaza. His plan involved the capture of Beersheba then Gaza, but this plan depended on water, a vital resource for the mounted troops. On the 28th-29th October, the 4th LH Bde moved forward as part of the general advance on Beersheba. On the morning of the 30th the brigade advanced to Beersheba through the waterless desert, circling the town to the east and holding 8 km north of the town. The Plan The plan was simple; attack Beersheba using mounted troops from the East while infantry attacked from the south east. It involved a deception plan to convince the Turks that the main attack would be on Gaza. Turkish defences included 1,000 infantry, 9 machine guns and 2 aircraft and defensive trenches with good fields of fire. The east and south were not protected by barb wire as the Turks were relying on the open and waterless terrain and assessed an attack on Gaza more likely. Descending upon them were 40,000 troops, including the British 20th Corps and the Desert Mounted Corps under Gen Sir Harry Chauval. Advancing on Beersheba, CPL Harry Gleeson (12LH) noted the ride to Beersheba was a very weary and dusty ride. TPR Hunter noted The dust was terrible, one could not see beyond the horses head. The horses braved the journey. I walked my horse for about 10 miles of flat country to give him a rest. The horses were carrying about 120kgs. Their riders knew there was no water available until Beersheba was captured. The Charge At 3.30 pm on the 31st October a few hours of daylight remained. Orders were issued for the capture of Beersheba, the final phase. Chauval ordered the 4th LH BDE to charge the trenches from the south east. Chauval knew the town must be taken before dark to secure the vital water wells. Grant, COMD 4th LH BDE gave orders personally to 12th LHR men you re fighting for water. There is no water between this side of Beersheba and Esani. Use your bayonets as swords. I wish you luck Lighthorsemen were more commonly mounted infantry rather than cavalry, and were only equipped with rifles and bayonets not suited for a cavalry charge. TPR Edward Dengate we got mounted, cantered about a ¼ of a mile up a bit of a rise, lined up along the brow of the hill, paused a moment, then went at them. CAPT Davis let out a yell at the top of his voice Come on boys, Beersheba first stop, that started them and we spurred our horses, the bullets got thicker, 3-4 horses came down, others with no riders kept going, the saddles splashed with blood, here and there a man running for cover behind a dead horse

4 Page 4 The Turks were squinting over their trenches. 50 yards to go: a lot of fellows dismounted near the trenches but most of us keep going, jumping the trenches and racing towards the town, yelling like madmen. We raced through scores on snipers and dugouts, and entered the two narrow streets of the town, Exploding magazines; buildings on fire and snipers didn t stop us. Tpr Jones 4th LHR As we got closer the Turkish riflemen picked us off. I could hear shrapnel hissing by, I didn t collect any nor did Jessie. She performed brilliantly and easily kept her position with the other horses. My cobber, Robbie from 3 Troop, was shot by a Turk and fell from his saddle. His mount, lightning, galloped alongside us. Lightning kept station with the other horses. After the charge we set about watering our horses and securing the town. I saw Lightning walking towards the horse lines, his head bowed and looking forlorn. The way Lightning walked I knew he could tell that his cobber was gone and not coming back. I could see it in poor ol Lightning s eyes. It was a sad sight, one that stays with me forever. From the time orders were given to attack until the entry into Beersheba less than one hour had passed. It had been a glorious hour, filled not only with military achievement of a rare kind, but with memorable and heroic deeds of individuals. It is now the legend known as the Charge at Beersheba. The Aftermath By nightfall Beersheba had fallen. The ferocity and speed of the attack demoralised the Turks; 38 Turkish officers, 700 men, 9 field guns and many other materials had been captured. By 10pm, 58,000 horsemen and 100,000 animals swarmed into Beersheba. One million litres of water quenched their thirst. Of the 800 who rode the charge, 31 had been killed (8 Officers and 29 OR) and 36 wounded (8 Officers and 28 OR). At least 70 horses died. TPR Harry Langtip the town was small but had some nice buildings. The water scheme was grand. We got into the Turkish stores and helped ourselves to grain for the horses. We got all the Turkish stores, there was everything; there were rifles and gear lying everywhere. The Legacy The light horsemen and their superb horses had carried out the most successful charge in the history of the war; some say the most successful in history, against what seemed to be impossible odds and an impossible task. In years to come the men would talk of this action at Beersheba, but as one Light Horseman said It was the horses that did it, those marvellous bloody horses. Where would we have been without them. The charge at Beersheba swayed the battle against the Turks in Palestine. It also changed the history of the Middle East war. Conclusion The legacy, romance and free spirit of the Light Horsemen is long gone from the battlefield. Today s warfare is highly technical, challenging and demanding with its advanced equipment, pace and functionality, but is neither romantic nor (maybe) something that legends are made from: (not denigrating those that are part of it nor the modern soldier s achievements). The horse, the skill of the rider, their legend and our connection to their stories and achievements are the everlasting legacy of the Light Horse. They remain in our history, hearts, memories and traditions forever. 5 Page 5 FIELD EXERCISE By Matt McQuillan The previous month and a half has seen the Regiment conduct a variety of live fire and dry fire exercises at both Greenbank Training Area and Shoal Water Bay. Early October saw B SQN deploy to the Greenbank Training Area for Exercise Viper Strike. This week long exercise was the final component of the Cavalry Recon Scout course for a select group of B SQN soldiers. It required the soldiers to work in 4 man teams to conduct a variety of recon tasks including CTRs, PTRs and OPs in order to be assessed and deemed competent to graduate the course. After a short week back in barracks post Ex Viper Strike, B SQN deployed again to Shoal Water Bay Training Area to conduct a variety of Troop level dry training tasks before completing their Troop and Squadron level live fire battle runs (likely for the last time in M113 AS4s as B SQN will be returning to the ASLAV platform next year). The 3 troops successfully completed their assessed live fire battle runs before conducting the day and a half long Squadron level battle run. This wrapped up the initial part of the exercise with the SQN returning to Brisbane for 3 days in order to conduct rehearsals and take part in the 100th Anniversary Beersheba Day mounted freedom of entry parade through Brisbane. Post parade the Regiment had a function at the Fox Hotel followed by a much needed day off before returning to Shoal Water Bay. This time B SQN scouts had the opportunity to conduct 2 days of dismounted live fire activities including a sneaker range activity and a live fire withdrawal from contact before the SQN moved into a dry fire force on force activity against A SQN. B SQN finished off their time at Shoal Water Bay as OPFOR for A SQN to conduct a delay against as part of the 7 Brigade Combined Unit Training Activity (CUTA). Once completed, A SQN had a further week in the Bay to complete their Troop level live fire battle runs. The newly reformed C SQN also deployed to Shoal Water Bay with the 4 recently acquired M1A1 Abrams, conducting its first live fire shoot as a part of 2/14. After their static live shoot, the Tank Troop was also called in to support the 8/9 RAR led CUTA in a live fire role. With all of this year s training requirements completed, the Regiment is now moving into its preparations for the Christmas stand down period with only a small number of members still out on support tasks for other Regiments and Organisations across Army. 6 Page 6 Vale BRIG Gordon Jones AM Gordon enlisted in the Australian Regular Army on 10th January 1966 and was allocated to the Royal Australian Infantry where he gave four years service in the 9th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment, including active service in South Vietnam in 1968/69. He rose to the rank of Sergeant before being selected for officer training in late In 1971, Gordon attended the Officer Cadet School at Portsea where he excelled. He graduated top of his class taking out eight of the 10 major prizes, including the Sword of Honour, The Governor General s Medal, the Peter Stuckey Mitchell Award and the New Zealand Chief of the General Staff s Prize. He graduated into the Royal Australian Armoured Corps and completed his Armour specialist training at Puckapunyal in Gordon s first regimental appointment was as a Tank Troop Leader with 1st Armoured Regiment. Further regimental, staff and training appointments as a Lieutenant and Captain followed, including 12 months technical training at the Royal Armoured Corps Centre, Bovington, in the United Kingdom. In 1984, after project management training in the United States, he was promoted to Major and posted to Materiel Division as the Assistant Project Director on the Army s Small Arms Replacement Project. In 1986 Gordon attended the US Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas. He didn t just excel here; his results were better than any other Australian before him. On graduation, Gordon received the Eisenhower Award as the Distinguished Allied Graduate and, for the first time by an overseas student, the top graduate award which included the Sword of Honour. In 1988 and 1989, Gordon served as Second-in- Command of the 1st Armoured Regiment, before being promoted Lieutenant Colonel and appointed Commanding Officer/Chief Instructor of the Armoured Centre. He was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia for exceptional service to the Army in armoured regimental, training and command appointments in the 1992 Queen s Birthday Honours List. Following service as an Instructor at the Army Command and Staff College at Fort Queenscliff, Gordon was promoted to Colonel and appointed as Director of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps & Army Area Representative (Puckapunyal). Promoted to Brigadier in 1998, Gordon served in Washington DC as the Australian Army Attache to the United States of America where he was able to use his considerable skills and previous experience in the USA to Army s benefit. He was awarded the US Legion of Merit for his services as Army Attache in Washington. On return to Australia, Gordon was appointed Commandant of the Australian Defence Force Academy before retiring on 18th October Gordon was a graduate of the University of New England and an Associate Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management. His many achievements were attained despite his long and valiant battles with Leukaemia and Mesothelioma. On retirement and despite his illness, Gordon remained active in many pursuits. Initially, he retired to a small rural property outside Maleny where, with his wife Robyn, he pursued his love for learning and hard work, completing courses on plants and revegetation while developing an amazing rain forest on their property. He even worked for Bunnings for a while and was seen by many in their advertisements on television. In 2012, Gordon moved to a unit overlooking the Raby Bay marina where he developed a passion for cooking and his gym work before settling into a home at Cleveland in his final months. An exceptional and inspirational officer who will be sadly missed by all of us who knew him. Gordon is survived by his beloved wife Robyn, his daughters Wendy and Stephanie, his sister Margaret, and grand children Damien, Jason and Sally. RIP Gordon. By: BRIG Maurie Meecham AM (Retd)

7 Page 7 RAAC CORPORATION REPORT Report by Dean Chappel As Assistant Treasurer I represented the Association at the Annual General Meeting of the RAAC Corporation held at Seymour/Puckapunyal 13-14th October. In addition Graeme Brown, Membership Member attended in his capacity as Treasurer of the RAAC Corporation. The meeting was presented with a number of Unit and affiliated Association reports including our Association. The Chair, Noel McLaughlin raised DVA concerns over contacting members separating from the service and their welfare. DVA are seeking a better system than those currently supporting ex-service personnel. There are (evidently) over 5500 Ex-Service Organisations (ESOs). The Corps RSM intends to ask the transition cell to hand out contact details of local Associations which personnel may choose to contact. Our Association will have our details as recorded as part of this scheme. Quite clearly departing personnel are at liberty to take whatever future pathway in life they chose. Our Association will be there when and if needed as a place that offers camaraderie and a link to the Corps. In addition to discussing matters relating to veterans and ex-serving personnel, the committee was presented with a plan for the future of the RAAC. This included deployment to Operation TAJI, the return of the M113AS4 vehicles to the RA Inf, an upgrade of the M1 Abrams fleet to A2/3 standard and the replacement of the ASLAV fleet under Land 400. This decision is due to be made in March The future of 2 Div RAAC units was presented, where ARES units will be allocated a dismounted role. And last but not least the RAAC Corporation voted to hold their next meeting in 2018 in Brisbane. I am unsure what this means for the Association but no doubt in the fullness of time we will be informed. One can hope they have informed the Regiment. Other than the formality of the meeting, I was treated to a visit to the Armoured Centre and RAAC Museum and enjoyed the odd beer. (PS It is assumed that Dean has treated his Pucka allergy rash). 8 Page 8 2nd/14th Light Horse Regiment (QMI) Association 41 Club Black Hat Function 11 November ~ By Shayne Burley History of the 41 Club name: The Tactical Sign of the 4th Cavalry Regiment is 41. This sign was generally painted on the on the front of the vehicle to identify what unit it was from. This year we held our 24th (we think) Black Hat Function and as previous years the function was well attended by approximately 120 people from as far away as Canberra and mid NSW. It was pleasing to note that members from as far back as 1958 up to current serving members attended. This year there was more of a focus on family and friends and it was pleasing to see so many families in attendance. This year the function kicked off at 1300 and after the initial bottle neck at the front gate due to the current security level all attendee s had to be escorted to the club, thanks to the guard for their assistance in escorting all up to the 41 Club. I noted that no convoy orders were issued and the cry of follow me I have a plan echoed orders from the past. Running the gauntlet of the entry point brings back memories of the old pay parades and trying to get out with some money left over. After the entry fee and some purchases you would generally be assaulted for raffle tickets by the ever present Danny Brookes, thanks again for your assistance Danny. Graeme Nicholas (President) welcomed all and thanked the CO for the use of the 41 Club. As it was Remembrance Day a small service was conducted for the day and to remember past members of the Regiment. At the conclusion of this Graeme handed over to Brett Lane for his rendition of Hallelujah Veterans Version. To say that it was very moving is an understatement; the passion can only be experience if you were there. Thanks Brett a fantastic job and a great voice. Overall it was a fantastic day and as always it was great catching up with old mates and fellow Black hat members. The association has also decided to make a small donation to the 41 Club as without them we could not hold these type functions. Also, a special mention should be made to the soldiers that supported the afternoon and without their enthusiastic support these days cannot be the success that they are. 9 Page 9 Presentation of Awards & Handover of Commanding Officers By Graeme Nicholas On the 23 November on behalf of the Association President Graeme Nicholas and Treasurer Shayne Burley presented book prizes to the Soldier of the Year and JNCO of the Year. The presentation coincided with a handover/takeover parade of Commanding Officers and other Regimental Awards and Promotions. The Soldier of the Year was awarded to TPR D R Cooper from A Sqn. The JNCO of the Year was awarded to CPL A Z Carlson from RHQ. The Association congratulates both recipients. In addition Shayne Burley presented a cheque for $400 to Regimental Funds as a token of thanks from the Association for support provided by the Regiment in 2017 and in particular support to the annual 41 Club BBQ on the 11 November and the Beersheba Freedom of the City Parade on 28 October. The parade farewelled LTCOL Andrew Moss CSM, the outgoing CO and welcomed LTCOL Daniel Conners as the incoming CO. The Association thanks Andrew for his support and encouragement that he has provided to the Association. It is understood Andrew will remain at Enoggera. We look forward to Andrew attending Association functions in the future. The Association welcomes Daniel and wishes him well in his tenure as Commanding Officer of the Regiment. 10 Page 10 FREEDOM OF THE CITY PARADE ~ 28 OCT 17 ~ By Sandy Johns Brisbane welcomed a perfect Queensland morning for this much anticipated event. The Association Members had received an invitation from the CO and his Organizing Committee to take pride of place in the Official Guest Marquee, and 60+ members and guests took advantage. Proceedings commenced with the MC giving an overview history of 2/14LHR(QMI). The Regiment was first formed on the 27 February 1860 as the Brisbane Mounted Rifles, and has under gone a number of name changes until the present day. A very interesting and distinguish history indeed. The parade got under way with the Challenge between the Qld Police and the CO, LTCOL Andrew Moss, CSM. The dismounted contingent let by MAJ Fricker took position to salute the Premier Official Guests, the Reviewing Officer, and the Lord Mayor of Brisbane, the Right Honorable Councillor Graham Quirk. The CO moved to the Dais and ordered the parade to march and drive past in successions of Squadrons. The Regiment drove past in call sign seniority, with Regimental Headquarters Troop leading. They were followed by A Squadron vehicles (ASLAV), the RSM, with his Guidon Party, B Squadron vehicles (M113AS4), the newly formed C Squadron (M1A1 ABRAMS Main Battle Tank) and then by Support Squadron. Totaling 60+ vehicles, a very impressive sight and sound. On all accounts, those who attended were very impressed with the officer s and soldier s foot drill, their precision driving and the general attitude of this well- trained unit. It was commented on after the parade that a few old Tankies were a little emotional on seeing the ABRAMS, the first Main Battle Tanks to grace the streets of Brisbane.
