2 NAVAL ACADEMY ALLX4NI ASSOCIATION. The Naval Academy Uumni Associat,ion is trying to get enough subscriu-- tions to enable it to pi.iblish a "Register of Graduates!'. It has sent subscription blanks to all ships end stations end is now trying to communicate with individual members of the Association who cennot be rezched 'through groups. Rasponses from many of the ships snd strtions have been excellmt, in mony cases 100 percent. Hovrevzr9 some of the ships have qparently noc understood that subscriptions were wanted not only from the sihips or from tha messes, but also from every individual member who wants to help keep the ' Associa tion alive. This Association, which i:; the old Graduates Associ3tion non escanded SO as to include non-graduates (bilgers) as associate members, wae organized about fifty years ago. Up to a few years ago, no attempt was mode to give the Association any values except social and sentimental ones. Now its aims and purposes have been grectly widened, and rittempt,s are being mede to make tk Association useful to the*individu:a memn'aers, to the Navy, and to the country. Numerous Branch Associations hove: been organized in all sections of the country, from New Englsnd to the Lest, Comt. Net-? branches are being organized whenever a group of Mc?v;il Academy men can be found wha live clo:;~ enough to each other to mrrnnt such zn orgonization. These branch EFSOciations are organized primarily for the purpose of enabling Navsl,!caden!;. men now in civil life to keep in touch with each othcr 2nd with %he Service; but their activities me by no me.-as restrictd to luncheons, dinners, end dances. They are accomplishing useful work, - helping Nmal. Academy men in civil life to find employmeat is only one of the things that, is being done. But even if th9 sole purpcsa oi' thess groups should be social, the establishment, all over the C O U ~ ~ ~ of Y, smzll groups of influential mr3n who are interested in the Havy is very much worth &ile,. The parent orgsnization here in Washington endsavors to keep in close and constant contact 15th 211 the branches. It has on file a complete luster of all Naval Academy graduates. lrdhile its limited fecilities hms not permitted it to keep an cbsolutely accurate record 0-C the :iddresses of all graduates in civil life, the recarcis that it; ha2 are tha best evailebl2. In addition to this, it is the only organization that is making any attcmpt to keep in contzct with those nho have attended the Naval -4cademy, but vho for on5 reason or anocher did not graduate. There arc? nearly 12,000 graduztes, and an untold number of non-graduates, - bilgers. 'The Secrctzry-Treasurer of the Association is a retired officer, not msigned to Rct.ive duty. He has been given the use of a desk in the Hmy l)epart,ment (3mm 5406), but he has no clericcd assistcnce and no officid. connection with the Navy Department. As there ilre no entrance fees required for membership in the Associstion, no dues, and no source of income, there are no funds for any purpose, not even for postage, This effort to publish and sell this Register is frankly an attempt to raise money that must be rciscd if the Association is to be kcpt alive. The attempt cr:n succeed only if tha individual members v5.11 bear in mind that individud cooperation is necessmy.
