2 Category: Deployments Subcategory: Deployments-general Tip: Keep Busy Keep yourself as busy as you can. Get a job, take up a hobby; take some classes. Do something that you probably wouldn't do if your spouse wasn't deployed. Tip: Letters Letters are your "lifeline to sanity"; wait until you have not received one in a while and see if you don't think so. But it takes a special skill to write a letter during deployment. You should avoid writing phrases such as "Everything is falling apart and I can't handle it without you" or "Everything is falling apart but I don't need you any more to fix it". Tip: Make Friends Make new friends with other spouses in your unit who are going through the same thing. Invest lots of time in your children. Go to museums, parks, out to dinner (even if it's just a picnic). Go on the Internet to military chats if you are not near any military folks. Tip: Stock Up Start planning for a deployment or long patrol in advance. Make sure you save plenty of money so that your bills can be paid while you are gone, as well as have extra for visiting each port. You also may want to stock up on the things you will need underway: toiletries, film, batteries, etc., so that you are not rushed to find these items the week before you leave, and so it doesn't put such a dent in you bank account. Tip: Take Pictures Take a couple of rolls of film of your spouse and your children, over the course of a few days, for instance, brushing teeth, making pancakes, playing in the sprinkler, reading a book. Then make up little books, one for your spouse, and one for each of your children, so that they can keep each other near while the parent is gone. Tip: Tips before the Deployments Spend family time together, like camping, or a barbecue, or a picnic, or just a day at home as a family. Take lots of pictures so the kids can keep their hearts close to you. Also make sure to take time out for you and your spouse as a couple too with a romantic evening. Give them a small memento of the evening to remind them of you when you are gone.

Then when you go into the Navy you are already an E-3, and that's a good rank for just entering the Navy. Tip: Aye Aye Sir Aye, Aye, Sir - Required official acknowledgement of an order meaning I have received, understand, and will carry out the order or instructions. Tip: BELAY BELAY - to make fast or to secure, as in "belay the line," to cancel or to disregard a statement just made. Tip: Between the Devil and the Deep In wooden ships, the "devil" was the longest seam of the ship. It ran from the bow to the stern. When at sea and the "devil" had to be caulked, the sailor sat in a bo'sun's chair to do so. He was suspended between the "devil" and the sea the "deep" a very precarious position, especially when the ship was underway. From that time on, the strongest drink aboard Navy ships could only be coffee, and over the years, a cup of coffee became known as "a cup of Joe." 6 Passageway - a hallway Tip: Pea Coat Sailors who have to endure pea-soup weather often don their pea coats...but the coat's name isn't derived from the weather. The heavy topcoat worn in cold, miserable weather by seafaring men was once tailored from pilot cloth a heavy, course, stout kind of twilled blue cloth with the nap on one side. The cloth was sometimes called P-cloth for the initial letter of "pilot" and the garment made from it was called a p-jacket later, a pea coat. The term has been used since 1723 to denote coats made from that cloth. Tip: Pogie Bait Pogie Bait - a piece of candy, cookies, etc. Tip: Port Port - left Tip: Quarterdeck The ceremonial location on board ship when the ship is moored or at anchor. It is located close to the brow or accommodation ladder and is the watch station for the Officer of the Deck. Tip: Rate Rate - a sailor's occupational speciality Tip: Scuttlebutt The origin of the word "scuttlebutt," which is nautical parlance for a rumor, comes from a combination of "scuttle" to make a hole in the ship's hull and thereby causing her to sink - and "butt" a cask or hogshead used in the days of wooden ships to hold drinking water. The cask from which the ship's crew took their drinking water like a water fountain was the "scuttlebutt". Even in today's Navy a drinking fountain is referred to as such. But, since the crew used to congregate around the "scuttlebutt", that is where the rumors about the ship or voyage would begin. Thus, then and now, rumors are talk from the "scuttlebutt" or just "scuttlebutt". Tip: Shipping Over Shipping Over - Reenlisting

Originally it described a battle maneuver of sailing ships. One ship would pass close to its adversary and on its windward side. The ship and sails would block the wind from the second vessel, causing it to lose headway. Losing motion meant losing maneuverability and the ability to carry on a fight. Tip: Spend Time Together Share meals, do household chores together, and enjoy recreational activities as a family. You don't get every day as a family while serving in the Navy, make the best of the time you have. Category: Surviving Long Deployments Subcategory: Surviving Long Deployments-general Tip: Pillow Cases Use available programs to print an image of yourself onto a t-shirt transfer for a pillow case for your spouse to take during deployments and patrols, it makes the nights alone a little easier. You may want to make one for yourself as well!

Visit the sites in each port, and when you and your family are stationed in new places, get out and see all of the sites. Category: Trivia Subcategory: Trivia-general Tip: Bamboozle Bamboozle In today's Navy, when you intentionally deceive someone, usually as a joke, you are said to have bamboozled them. The word was used in the days of sail also, but the intent was not hilarity. Bamboozle meant to deceive a passing vessel as to your ship's origin or nationality by flying an ensign other than your own -- a common practice of pirates.
