Dear Reader, Having celebrated the 20th anniversary in 2012, The General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy of Lithuania entered its third decade of existence. The Academy is the only higher education institution in Lithuania preparing officers. Officer training at the Military Academy of Lithuania is related to the time-honoured traditions preserved since the times of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Our nation has always respected and treasured the individual leading warriors to the battle for freedom and independence of the Homeland. Respect is earned for the resolution to fight honourably and with dignity and for the sacrifice of life in a life-ordeath situation in defence of the vulnerable. Loyalty and honour, resolution and courage, will and dignity, professionalism and responsibility, duty and love for the Homeland are the universal and immutable values that have always been related to military profession and are now instilled into the future officers at the Military Academy of Lithuania. Is it too great an ambition? The question has the only answer. Since we aim to prepare a reputable and highly-regarded Lithuanian officer, we must set high standards as the Military Academy of Lithuania educates the 21st century officer-leader who is competent to fight professionally and understands the significance of the oath to the country. We focus on preparing a reputable, welleducated and well-mannered officer able to think critically a citizen in uniform. Aim of the Academy To train commanders-leaders for the Lithuanian Armed Forces by cherishing their traditions, providing high-quality university education, military education and performing scientific researches. Commandant Colonel Eugenijus VOSYLIUS

THE GENERAL JONAS ŽEMAITIS MILITARY ACADEMY OF LITHUANIA WHERE WE ARE FACTS AND FIGURES WHERE WE ARE 1747 Duke Mykolas Kazimieras Radvila Žuvelė established a private Cadet Corps Knight School in Nesvydžius Treasurer of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania Antoni Tyzenhaus established a Military School in Gardinas. In 1782 the School was named the Cadet Corps and transferred to Vilnius. It operated till the occupation of the Polish- Lithuanian Commonwealth in King and Grand Duke of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth Stanislovas Augustas Poniatovskis established a joint Lithuanian and Polish officer-training institution in Warsaw. 25 January 1919 Officer Jonas Galvydis-Bykauskas was appointed the first Commandant of the Military School. The date is considered the official date of the establishment of the Military School During the 10th anniversary the Military School was presented with a battle flag and the President of the Republic of Lithuania Antanas Smetona agreed to become a patron of the School. Since then it was called the Military School of the First President of Lithuania. 25 October 1932 The Military School of the First President of Lithuania published the first issue of the magazine Kariūnas ( Cadet ). Now it is a quarterly magazine with annual circulation of 1,000 copies. By1940 the Military School of the First President of Lithuania had trained 20 professional officers and 14 reserve officers. When the Soviet Union occupied Lithuania in 1940, Class 21 and Class 22 of professional officers and Class 15 of reserve officers had graduated from the Military School. 16 June 1992 The Government of the Republic of Lithuania approved the Resolution on the Establishment of the National Defence Academy under which the National Defence School was established. The date is considered the official date of the establishment of the Military Academy of Lithuania. 30 August 1992 The National Defence School was presented with a battle flag emblazoned with the embroidered golden slogan Our Weapon, Our Education For Our Motherland Lithuania. 18 January 1994 Following the decision of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, the National Defence School was reorganized into the Military Academy of Lithuania with its Statute approved on May July 1994 Class 1 graduated from the Military Academy of Lithuania; 111 graduates were commissioned as lieutenants. 20 November 1998 The Military Academy of Lithuania was named after the Partisan General Jonas Žemaitis. Since 1 September 2000 the Military Academy of Lithuania has been accepting female applicants In accordance with the development programme of the Military Academy of Lithuania, military training and academic studies were separated The Military Academy of Lithuania published nearly 400 publications, including textbooks, manuals, dictionaries, monographs, different scientific conference materials; teaching-related, periodical, methodological and informative publications cadets of full-time studies (1513 cadets), part-time studies and Master degree studies graduated from the Military Academy of Lithuania course participants completed military, English language and other courses conducted at the Military Academy of Lithuania. In 2012 the number of cadets was 191, including 18 female cadets; 9 cadets studied abroad; 66 cadets in Bachelor degree studies and 71 cadets in Master degree studies course participants attended courses at the Military Academy of Lithuania. January 2013 The library of the Military Academy of Lithuania had more than 210,000 copies of publications in stock. January 2013 The academic staff of the Military Academy of Lithuania included 17 professors, 21 associate professors, 51 university teachers and senior teachers, 28 lecturers and 44 military instructors. 19 July 2013 Class 20 graduated from the Military Academy of Lithuania; 51 graduates were commissioned as lieutenants. n the 16th and 17th centuries the land on the left bank of I the Neris river starting from the bridge over the Vilnelė, its tributary, and upwards as far as Antakalnis transport depot belonged to the Sapiegos, Pacai, Sluškos and other noblemen of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania who built their summer residences there. At that time the Sapiegos family owned the largest domain including the current territory of The General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy of Lithuania. More than three hundred years have passed since the year 1691 when the most honourable and influential nobleman of the 17th century Hetman of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Voivode of Vilnius Kazimieras Jonas Sapiega built a representational palace of the Middle Baroque style in the present-day Antakalnis district. On his initiative, in the period of , the Church of Our Lord Jesus and the Trinitarian Monastery were built completing the architectural ensemble of the residence. When the Grand Duchy of Lithuania lost its independence and became a part of the Russian Empire, the Russian military authorities took control of the palace and changed its purpose many times using it as a military school, barracks or military hospital. On 4 May 1844, the Tsar s administration decided to construct a gunpowder mill and other buildings necessary for the military purposes. The decision laid foundations for the construction of Vilnius district military engineering administration buildings on the present territory of the Military Academy of Lithuania. In the course of time the 2nd Engineer Battalion was established here together with Alexander Barracks. During the Soviet occupation, in September 1940, cadets and officers of the Military School were moved to the newly established Vilnius Infantry School (former premises of the military hospital). It was here that the last classes of officers (Class 22) and reserve officers (Class 15) that year finished the School that operated throughout the occupation period until its reorganization into Vilnius Air Defence Electronic Engineering School and later to Vilnius Higher Air Defence Commander School of Radio Electronics. The major buildings of the Military Academy of Lithuania were constructed in a perfunctory manner during the Soviet times; however, after the restoration of independence, the complex was renovated and now looks modern and glints with bright colours. The fairly old tsarist-time building of the Military Academy Club, officer dormitory and NATO Energy Security Centre of Excellence underwent renovation as well and were improved and modernized out of all recognition. It is an interesting paradox that although the preparation of Lithuanian officers was terminated in 1940, in 1992 it was resumed in the very place it had begun on the residential territory of the Sapiegos, noblemen of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. 4 5

In June 1954, Jonas Žemaitis was sentenced to death in a closed session and executed on November 26 in Butyrka prison in Moscow. His words, spoken after the sentence was pronounced, have come true: Just like the followers of mine, I think that the Soviet Union invaded our country with its armed forces I consider this step of the Soviet government illegal. All the underground anti-soviet activities, a participant of which I am, I consider righteous and non-criminal. I want to emphasize that as long as I have been leading the Lithuanian struggle for freedom, I have been making every effort to stick to the principles of humanity No brutal activities have been allowed... I am aware of the sentence to be pronounced. Still, I believe that the fight I have been leading for nine years will achieve the desired outcomes. 6 TO EDUCATE A LEADER-PATRIOT OF THE 21ST CENTURY CADETS LIFE CADETS LIFE 10 Tel. (+370 5) A ll cadets reside at the Military Academy of Lithuania. From the very day of the oath they become Lithuanian servicemen and must obey the strict rules of the Lithuanian Armed Forces. The barracks are modern and resemble a small and neat hotel rather than a student hostel. Four cadets share a room equipped with a computer. Cadets are entirely financed by the state and have all social guarantees. They differ from the students of other universities by their uniforms of three types for different tasks: a service uniform for lectures, a battle dress uniform for exercise and a full dress uniform for special occasions. Cadets are allowed to leave the territory of the Military Academy of Lithuania only with the permission of senior commanders. High achievers, disciplined and exemplary cadets are permitted to leave on weekends. The life of cadets is strictly scheduled. Their ordinary day starts at 6 a.m. and ends with the evening inspection. Those who have no extra homework go to bed at 10 p.m. Exercise starts with morning allocation of duties at the parade ground. During the ceremony everybody sings the national anthem while the historical flag and the State Flag of the Republic of Lithuania are raised. Cadets march past the flags and salute them. When the ceremony is over, it is time for lectures that last from 8.15 a.m. to 1.20 p.m. six academic hours in total. After lunch cadets have a thirty-minute break to take a rest and prepare for a two-hour military training exercise from 2.50 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. The evening inspection is also held at the parade ground and finishes by lowering the flags. Senior cadets are appointed commanders of companies for six months and hold the positions of squad and platoon commanders, deputy company commanders, etc. A position taken is marked by corresponding insignia. The cadets of first and second year are not appointed commanders and have no insignia accordingly as they have to earn their stripes. The Cadets Code of Honour plays a special role in every cadet s life for it implants the understanding of honour and moral values, which will lead cadets throughout their studies and further service for the good of the Homeland. The essence of the Code of Honour is well captured by the four major rules: do not lie, cheat, steal or tolerate those who do. The Cadets Court of Honour controls cadets compliance with the Code. Only the most authoritative cadets can become members of the Court. Cadets Council, a bridge between cadets, command and Lithuanian universities 11

TO EDUCATE A LEADER-PATRIOT OF THE 21ST CENTURY LEADERSHIP TRAINING Tel. (+370 5) LEADERSHIP TRAINING F rom the earliest times when people started forming groups, leadership has become an inevitable part of life and survival. A leader has always been the strongest, smartest, brightest and excellent in every other aspect person in a group. And though behaviour and values of such person attract people, a leader is not a superman. He or she enjoys work, knows how to do it and does his or her best. Others simply do not do this. The Military Academy of Lithuania is the only higher education institution in Lithuania that prepares a fighter a leader to be unconditionally trusted by servicemen and the people. Leadership training includes seemingly unrelated areas, such as military ethics, aesthetics, protocol and etiquette, history of military art; however, a true leader is a versatile personality requiring wellrounded education. A true leader is not just a great serviceman, he or she is a decent citizen, patriot and intellectual who appreciates art and behaves correctly in official and unofficial environment; has knowledge of pedagogy, psychology and other subjects seemingly unrelated to warfare. A graduate becomes a platoon commander, a formal one, of nearly thirty servicemen. A young lieutenant may become an informal leader, teacher, psychologist, assistant, intercessor and sometimes a pleasant companion to his or her platoon servicemen due to some personal qualities. From the very first day at the Military Academy of Lithuania, cadets are made aware that it is the place for active and very dutiful persons, who must do their best, i.e. have stamina during field exercise and ability to concentrate, control and command a platoon; have intelligence and creativity in the studies of theoretical subjects. Nevertheless, all the knowledge cadets gain at the Military Academy of Lithuania and as lieutenants take away with them is a necessary background for a commander, but mainly it is theoretical knowledge and little experience of life. The diploma is just a stepping-stone to real life, when the leaders start teaching their servicemen and learn simultaneously, thus gaining new experience. Only life will show what kind of leaders and persons they will become. One is not born a leader, one becomes a leader at the Academy. This is the path of an officer

TO EDUCATE A LEADER-PATRIOT OF THE 21ST CENTURY AESTHETIC EDUCATION Tel. (+370 5) C adets cultural life is meaningful and diverse. They sing in a choir and learn to dance waltz, tango, cha cha and other dances during their second year of studies. Their dance partners are students from Vilnius higher education institutions. During a special evening at the end of the academic year, a competition is held with a qualified jury selecting best pairs. AESTHETIC EDUCATION 14 15

TO EDUCATE A LEADER-PATRIOT OF THE 21ST CENTURY PASTORAL CARE Tel. (+370 5) PASTORAL CARE A Serviceman at Prayer... serviceman carrying the Bible, studying it and A applying its statements to his or her life? Why not? It is often said that it is not modern arms, advanced technologies or the size of the armed forces that determines the victory for it is achieved by servicemen s strength and spiritual maturity. These are the areas of activities the military chaplains of the Lithuanian Armed Forces are engaged in. In 2001, St. Anselm s Chapel was opened at the Military Academy of Lithuania. Here the religious community has been celebrating Mass and sacraments. United by common faith, we embrace in prayer the entire Academy community and their families. Alongside academic studies and military training, the Military Academy of Lithuania also provides cadets with spiritual education. Cadets are offered a course on pastoral care. This is a four-year lecture cycle on Christian Doctrine, deep and strong faith, other Christian denominations, and major religions of the world. What for? For the greater awareness of the Christian tradition that had a significant influence on the development of the culture and mentality of Western Europe. The cadets and the Academy staff eagerly participate in pilgrimages. Every year we go to Šiluva and other religious places in Lithuania; to Lourdes in France that attracts servicemen from all over the world to thank God and pray for peace. Every autumn we go on a pilgrimage from the Hill of Crosses in Šiauliai to Šiluva. The Academy community can prepare for the Sacraments of Baptism, Holy Communion, Confirmation and Marriage as well as celebrate them. It has become a nice annual tradition to meet at the International Christian Conference for Young Officers and Cadets in spring. Representatives of 10 countries attend the conference, which enables them to strengthen their faith and share the experiences, thus assuming once again responsibility for being a bearer of good news in their places of service. Army chaplains devote much time for personal meetings with the Academy staff and servicemen to discuss religious matters and problems relating to their service or family. Cadets highly professional assistance at Mass during religious, public and military holidays is worthy of admiration. Rejoicing at those who follow the road of faith or are still searching for it, we wish you Divine Providence and Peace

TO EDUCATE A LEADER-PATRIOT OF THE 21ST CENTURY SPORT SPORT Tel. (+370 5) C adets enjoy spending their leisure time actively. A future officer must constantly exercise to remain calm and strong and to hold up as an inspiring example to his or her servicemen even in the most complex situations. Physical training is one of the most important personality development tools enabling cadets to develop physically and spiritually. The most popular sports at the Military Academy of Lithuania are military pentathlon, basketball, force triathlon, football, boxing, combat self-defence, track and field athletics, volleyball, beach volleyball, and chess. We are happy to see our sportsmen achieving excellent results not only in the championships organized by the National Defence System but also in a wide range of championships of the Lithuanian higher education institutions, national championships and Baltic States student games and tournaments. Experienced coaches of the Division of Physical Training have trained many champions and prizewinners of the Lithuanian youth and adults boxing, force triathlon and weightlifting championships. The weightlifting team is a multiple-time prizewinner of the Lithuanian Armed Forces and Lithuanian youth and student weight-lifting championships. Remarkable achievements honour the following sportsmen of the Military Academy of Lithuania: Edgaras Raibužis (force triathlon), Master of Sport, prizewinner of the National Men Championship in 2011 and Lithuanian youth record holder (307.5 kg barbell squat); Andrius Kubilius, Master of Sport, champion of the Lithuanian youth and men weight-lifting (2012) and world student weight-lifting championships. The teams of beach volleyball and combat selfdefence are multiple-time champions and prizewinners of the Lithuanian Armed Forces championships. The combat self-defence team has successfully defended the champion s title five times in a row. In 2011, cadets Mantvydas Miliauskas and Žygimantas Utkus participated in the World Servicemen Boxing Championship. The trackmen team is one of the strongest in the National Defence System and in 2011 it became a prizewinner of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Cross-Country Race. The military pentathlon team has been crowned champion of the most military championships. Volleyball, basketball and football teams participate in Vilnius tournaments all year round. Alongside academic studies and military training exercises, cadets daily schedule also includes a 1.5-hour team and individual training. Thus, the Military Academy of Lithuania trains not only leaders but also sports champions

TO EDUCATE A LEADER-PATRIOT OF THE 21ST CENTURY SELECTION Who encouraged you to participate in the candidate selection to the Military Academy of Lithuania? More and more girls choose to become cadets. Why? What did your family say about your wish to become a cadet? Have you ever been a rifleman, scout or volunteer of the National Defence Volunteer Force? Cdt. Snieguolė PIEKUTĖ I learnt about the Academy from my father and it was him who encouraged me. He knew my physical capabilities, will and determination. After long considerations on my future studies, I decided that it was the exact place to realize my potential. Now girls are becoming physically strong, sometimes even stronger than boys. When you see physically and morally weak boys, you instantly wish to be in command of them and become a leader. That is why girls choose the military for more possibilities of self-expression. My parents were glad as they had encouraged me themselves. They would also support my decision to withdraw from the studies if they were too difficult or I disliked them to stop my torment and take a more suitable way. At first my brothers told me that the profession is too difficult for me, but when I entered the Academy and completed the Basic Military Training Course, they accepted the fact. No, I have not. Cdt. Mantas GAIDJURGIS I learnt about the Academy at school when I was in the ninth grade. I was led by my own desire, no external factors or persons influenced my decision to enter the Military Academy of Lithuania. The world is changing as time goes by and more and more girls enjoy and promote this kind of lifestyle. Most likely they enjoy challenges, action, adrenaline and sensations never to be experienced by civilians. I presume these are the primary reasons. They reacted positively and supported me wholeheartedly. In the period of , I was a serviceman of the professional military service and served in the Reconnaissance Company of the Motorized Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf. It is a great honour and pride for me and I think for every serviceman and officer to wear the uniform of the Lithuanian Armed Forces. T he General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy of Lithuania has succeeded in becoming one of the most exceptional higher education institutions in Lithuania mainly due to the modern selection system. Youth selection is organized by the Officer Selection Centre that primarily aims at selecting eligible applicants who have necessary qualities and skills for becoming perfect commanders. The selection process lasts for two days; the tested groups are composed of 6-10 applicants. The tasks are of great diversity: individual and group ones.it is sometimes is required to arrive at a unanimous decision despite different attitudes, lack of time resulting in stress or a great number of rules to be obeyed. In accordance with strictly defined criteria, the Selection Commission assesses applicants personal qualities (stress control, resolution, ability to influence others, communication and agreement with different people, etc.) and abilities, such as analyzing, problem solving, logical thinking, spatial orientation and others contributing to the development of the future commander. Particular attention is paid to applicant s motivation for becoming an officer and joining military service at the Lithuanian Armed Forces. The process of selecting applicants takes place all year round, thus enabling all interested to try their strength prior to the end of the academic year when students are occupied with preparation for the upcoming school-leaving examinations. The applicants must be at least 16 years of age. Equal professional aptitude requirements are applied for both male and female applicants except for physical fitness standards that are lowered for females. Those who successfully pass a professional aptitude test and satisfy medical requirements have equal rights to take part in the entrance competition to the Academy. The applicants who have the highest competitive scores in their school-leaving certificates are admitted to the Military Academy of Lithuania. With the aim of introducing the applicants to the daily military routine, they are accommodated at the barracks where they must submit to discipline, wear military-like uniforms, practice drilling, listen carefully to orders and carry them out throughout the selection process. Senior cadets devote their leisure time for presenting learning and living conditions to the applicants and sharing their experience of military challenges and daily routine. Furthermore, participation in the selection process is a unique experience as in two days a group of strangers form a strong team, solve challenging group tasks and realize the importance of the input of every team member in team-building. Participation in the selection enriches the applicants with the new knowledge of the Military Academy of Lithuania and specificity of the military service in the Lithuanian Armed Forces. What do you think of the selection to the Military Academy of Lithuania, is it necessary? In my opinion, it is necessary for it tests physical capabilities and logical thinking of those who wish to study here. According to its results, the best candidates worthy to be cadets are selected. Yes, it is necessary because not everyone can be a leader, commander or be in command of a group. It is not as easy as it may seem. That is why the selection is indispensable for selecting persons capable of commanding and suitable for the military service. SELECTION 20 Tell us about the challenges you faced during the selection process. What personal qualities are necessary to get selected? What is still missing to make your dreams come true? I cannot say that I faced any special challenges as I had been prepared for them. Perhaps personal leadership tasks that required quick performance which was difficult due to unfamiliar team members and their different personal qualities. The key qualities are self-confidence, quick thinking, great task performance and ability to express thoughts fluently. Besides the long years of studies, aspirations for higher ranks remain, so the dreams are endless in the military as new fields for further self-development and new aims keep occurring. I had to take psychological tests, complete tasks on leadership, planning, 2D (twodimensional) and 3D (three-dimensional) thinking, mathematics and pass a physical fitness test. Only when all the tests are passed, the Military Medical Expertise Commission decides upon suitability for service. Those who participate in the selection process should have more self-confidence, express personal opinion fearlessly and be more active. Intelligence, inventiveness and thorough physical fitness are essential qualities for passing professional aptitude test successfully. I wish to graduate from the Military Academy of Lithuania, return to the Reconnaissance Company and later possibly join the Special Forces. 21

THE GENERAL JONAS ŽEMAITIS MILITARY ACADEMY OF LITHUANIA Tel. (+370 5) LEADERSHIP TRADITIONS TRAINING T he community of the Military Academy of Lithuania maintains a great annual tradition to mark the beginning of the academic year with joint celebration Rudeniukė. The event also bids farewell to summer, strengthens and unites the community and families. Everybody enjoys spending time together, competing and socializing in the informal environment, relaxing and eventually throwing oneself into work. On 16 June, the Military Academy of Lithuania celebrates the establishment of the National Defence School (1992). Every year the President of the Republic of Lithuania commissions the graduates of the Academy by touching their shoulders with a sword on Simono Daukanto Square. The timehonoured tradition from the times of knights was continued by the President Antanas Smetona. He commissioned the graduates of the Military School by touching their shoulders with a sword and affirming: You shall not draw the sword without a cause nor shall you sheathe it without honour! In 2009, the precept became the motto of the Military Academy of Lithuania. It is a great honour and commitment to the Homeland, family and relatives for cadets to be swarn in with Gediminas Castle and national flag in sight. After the Basic Officer Training Course at the Lithuanian Great Hetman Jonušas Radvila Training Regiment in Rukla, the first-year cadets take the oath in the historic Old Arsenal Yard of the Lower Castle. The oath ceremony is attended by commanders, parents and relatives. January 13 is close to every Lithuanian s heart as the tragic events of January 1991 are significant not only to the witnesses but to all the citizens as well. On this occasion, cadets are acquainted with the defensive operation of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania in 1991; they also listen to the memories of the witnesses. It has become a tradition for cadets to discuss those days of January at the educational event in the Seimas and make independent decision on the defence of the Seimas complex and possible ways of offence in the present or past situation. Many cadets participate in the annual international race Following the Life and Death Road dedicated to the memory of the Defenders of Freedom. On the eve of the Day of Restoration of Independence of Lithuania, cadets light a huge bonfire on the historic Stalo Hill and invite the community of the Military Academy of Lithuania to sing songs and listen to the speeches and recollections of the honoured guests. Every year cadets celebrate Freshers Fair during which the first-year cadets take on interesting challenges. Later they undertake to follow faithfully the Military Code of Ethics, sign the Cadets Book of Honour and become full members of the Academy community. Cadets Christmas is a very joyous and awaited celebration as cadets demonstrate their creativity, wit and artistry in staging memorable and fascinating moments of the studies and nominating lecturers, instructors and friends of the year. When the merriment is over, cadets and officers sit around the Christmas Eve table as one big family, share Christmas wafers and wish each other peace. The clubs established at the Military Academy of Lithuania unify the community and representatives of other institutions. In 2010, adventurous travelers started the Travelers Club, sergeants formed the Sergeants Club and officers met at the Officers Club. The latter fosters military culture and national traditions and promotes a healthy lifestyle. The Discussion Club has resumed its activities as well. The Alumni Association of the Military Academy of Lithuania was formed in The association helps the graduates, officers, instructors and other employers to maintain relations with the Academy and each other. The Alumni Association aims at contributing to the activities of the Academy, maintaining its good name in the society, fostering military values and helping cadets with preparation for the service in the Lithuanian Armed Forces and application of knowledge and skills acquired. On the day of graduation every class of graduates plants an oak tree on the territory of the Military Academy of Lithuania 50
