Veterans Day ceremony Fort Bliss pays respect to veterans, nation s heroes By Abigail Meyer Fort Bliss Bugle Staff Aspire to inspire. Retired 1st Sgt. Tommy Lloyd spent 22 years serving America. As the guest speaker for the 1st Armored Division and Fort Bliss Veterans Day ceremony, this was his message for veterans and Soldiers. We re here to acknowledge and recognize our veterans, Lloyd said. A veteran is somebody who has been there and done that. Speaking from experience, Lloyd said the solemn oath service members take applies beyond uniformed service. Each of us should have the aspiration to be an inspiration to all these young Soldiers that are here, Lloyd said. Because one day they will become veterans Make sure that the veterans continue to do the time-honored traditions of passing on knowledge, wisdom and experiences from one generation of Soldiers to the next. Soldiers, family members and the local community gathered at the 1st Armored Division headquarters here Nov. 9 to pay their respects to veterans, past and present. It s a time to celebrate our veterans and their legacy. Today, we salute those who served our country with dignity and honor, said Col. Mark Landes, deputy commanding general-support, 1st Armored Division and Fort Bliss. Members of the Army, the Navy, the Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard. As America remembers those who have served on Veterans Day, the Defense Department reaffirms its dedication to today s force and recommits itself to building the force of the future, Defense Secretary Ash Carter said. The secretary was keynote speaker at a Veterans Day ceremony at the Women in Military Service for America Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery Nov. 11. Today, we honor every American who has stepped forward to serve, he said of the more than 20 million living veterans and more than two million Americans still serving in uniform around the world. Force of the future The men and women of the force of the future will inherit a remarkable legacy, Carter said in prepared remarks. Since the nation s founding, each of our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Coast Guardsmen and veterans men and women active, Guard, and Reserves has done one of the noblest things a person can do, which is to help defend our country and make a better world for our children. And as the world and wars have changed, they ve fought, adapted to fit the times, and prepared for the future, he said. Those who today follow in the footsteps of America s veterans face five major and evolving challenges, Carter said, from Russian aggression and coercion, to the military rebalance to the Asia-Pacific region, strengthening U.S. deterrent and desee DOD Page 2A

We, veterans, Soldiers, we re in the spotlight all the time. Whether you know it or not, people are looking at you, being judgmental of you, Lloyd said. So be careful. How you carry yourself goes a long way. As an example, Lloyd spoke about a time where he was recognized as a Soldier just by his mannerisms, intimating that Soldiers represent the Army throughout their lives. The things that you say, the things that you do and the things that you don t do, Abigail Meyer / Fort Bliss Bugle Staff are being observed. People in this community are watching you daily, Lloyd said. That veteran swagger that you have, you will never lose that because it s ingrained in you. During the ceremony, the 1st Armored Division Band played the Armed Forces Medley and Sgt. 1st Class Linda Wolfe sang the national anthem. The 1st Armored Division Iron Training Detachment completed the ceremonial flag detail after observing retreat. Observances took place throughout the weekend in El Paso and the nation, paying tribute to America s heroes. DOD Continued from Page 1A fense forces as North Korea continues nuclear and missile provocations, Iranian aggression and malign influence in the Gulf, and the campaign to defeat the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. Preparing for uncertain future The secretary said today s force is also preparing to contend with an uncertain future so the DOD remains ready for unanticipated challenges. I m doing everything I can to support the strength and readiness of today s fighting force investing in the right training, the right force size, the right equipment and the right compensation and benefits that our troops, military families and DOD civilians deserve, he said, adding that support also extends to the fallen, wounded, ill and injured and to military families. And while the DOD s force of today is outstanding and meets its many challenges, Carter said thinking outside of the Pentagon s five-sided box will ensure the U.S. military remains the best. As generations change, so too does technology and labor markets, requiring the DOD to stay competitive to attract and retain the most talented people, he said. Women in combat One such change to keep the competitive edge was Carter s landmark decision last year to open up all combat positions to women without exception to benefit from the service of every American who can meet the military s high standards and contribute to the defense mission, he noted. Tech. Sgt. Brigitte N. Brantley / U.S. Air Force Defense Secretary Ash Carter reacts to a light moment during the 19th annual Veterans Day ceremony at the Women in Military Service for America Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., Nov. 11. (That) requires drawing strength from the broadest possible pool of talent, and that includes women, because they make up over 50 percent of the American population, the secretary said. To succeed in the DOD mission, he added, the department has to take full advantage of every individual who can meet its standards. Any woman who qualifies can now contribute to our mission in ways they could not before, the secretary said. They can drive tanks, fire mortars and lead infantry Soldiers into combat. They can serve as Army Rangers and Green Berets, Navy SEALs, Marine Corps infantry, Air Force parajumpers and everything else that previously was open only to men. Whether military veterans served years ago or are part of the DOD s force of the future, I couldn t be prouder of our men and women for what they do every day and for all they ve done for us, Carter said. Their excellence is unparalleled. Their service is invaluable. And their sacrifices will never be forgotten. O- is the universal blood donor. Only 7% of the population has this blood type. The sound of cadences and beating drums filled the streets as spectators cheered. This is a day where we get to recognize each other, said Brig. Gen. Kurt Crytzer, commanding general of Joint Task Force North and the senior Fort Bliss military representative at the parade. All the people who have served, whether it s a short period of time or a long period of time, they took it upon themselves to serve their country. Crytzer and Command Sgt. Maj. Tim Dotson, senior enlisted adviser for JTFN, spent time talking with veterans who were seated in the official viewing area. They paved the way for us. Different challenges, but no less important challenges. We never want to lose that legacy, that history, Crytzer said. It s always important and we want to talk to them, to learn about some of their experiences, some of what they went through. It s also important just to recognize them and just take the time to say thank you. The JTFN Color Guard led the parade, followed by the 1st Armored Division Band. Dotson said the day is also about remembering the families of the veterans. It s a day where we say Thank you veterans for your service and sacrifice. I also like to include our families as well, because without them behind the scenes and their love and support, it s just not the same, Dotson said. About 22 Junior ROTC units were a highlight of the parade. Air Force, Navy, Marine and Army cadets marched through the city. Marines from the 8th Recruiting Station judged the units as they passed the reviewing area. Young Marines carried photos of World War II veterans from the El Paso area. Navy veteran Raymond Aguilar served in Vietnam in 1970 and said he was there to salute his brethren, regardless of service. There s a lot of servicemen that did serve their country and they never came back. They are fallen Soldiers, but they are not forgotten, Aguilar said. It s later, but they remember us. We re all brothers, regardless of Army, Navy, Air Force, whatever, we were all there. Crytzer and Dotson thanked the city of El Paso for their support of the military, both veterans and active-duty service members. This city is phenomenal in how it supports its veterans, Crytzer said. There are many groups that come out and support the veterans that have served previously. It s one of the best cities I ve seen, for supporting our veterans. A parade is a collective way for a city to celebrate together. El Paso showed its support for its veterans and celebrated the future generations of veterans, those still learning to march in their Junior ROTC formations. This city is phenomenal in how it supports its veterans. There are many groups that come out and support the veterans that have served previously. It s one of the best cities I ve seen, for supporting our veterans. >> Brig. Gen. 5 By Sgt. James Avery 24th Press Camp Headquarters As the Northeast Veterans Day Parade made its way up Hondo Pass toward Old Glory Memorial Park, a line of more than 20 Soldiers from 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, and the 1st Armored Division Sustainment Brigade, carried the 5,000-square-foot flag called Old Glory on their shoulders. Pfc. Blake Miller, assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 35th Armored Regiment, 2nd BCT, 1st AD, an Iron Knight, was on hand to help unfurl Old Glory during the raising ceremony. I came out today to honor those who have served before me, Miller said. I want to show respect for all veterans, especially the fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives so I could live mine free. For some, Veterans Day is a family affair. Capt. Caitlin Beal, an operations officer with the 1st AD Sust. Bde., is a veteran herself, having served in Afghanistan. She is just the latest in a long line of Soldiers in her family. This is a way I can give back, Beal said. This is a day to show veterans that they haven t been forgotten. As Old Glory raised to the top of the 200-foot-tall flagpole in the center of the park, and despite the hundreds of locals, veterans and Soldiers in attendance, the only sounds heard were the national anthem and the massive flag buffeting in the El Paso wind. As it hit the top and came back down to halfmast in respect for America s fallen, the crowd cheered and clapped at near deafening levels. Whether you ve worn a uniform or not, we re all here to pay homage to those who have, Beal said. We re lucky to have a community like El Paso to wrap their arms around us in support. We re all one community here. FORT BLISS BUGLE November 17, A Soldiers unfurl flag after Northeast Veterans Day Parade Sgt. 6 6A November 17, 2016 FORT BLISS BUGLE Spc. Hanna Ingram / STB, 1st AD Sust. Bde Public Affairs Representative Command Sgt. Maj. Ernest S. Peterson, Special Troops Battalion, 1st Armored Division Sustainment Brigade, 1st Armored Division, speaks during his change of responsibility ceremony at the brigade s headquarters building Nov. 2. STB bids farewell to senior enlisted adviser By Sgt.1st Class Shelia Cooper 1st AD Sust. Bde. Public Affairs Soldiers from the Special Troops Battalion Iron Legion, 1st Armored Division Sustainment Brigade, bid farewell to their command sergeant major near the brigade headquarters building Nov. 2. More than 200 Soldiers formed up by companies to begin the change of responsibility ceremony, where Command Sgt. Maj. Ernest S. Peterson relinquished responsibility to Command Sgt. Maj. Jason C. Porras. First off I want to thank God for making this possible and getting me through this chapter of my life, Peterson said. I would like to give a special thanks to some of my fellow noncommissioned officers I have served with in the past. In May 2015, the Army re-designated the 15th Sust. Bde. as the 1st AD Sust. Bde., which realigned the 1st AD Sust. Bde. under the 1st Armored Division. While serving as the support operations sergeant major in the 15th Sust. Bde., Peterson was chosen to become the command sergeant major for the battalion. Peterson addressed the formation of Soldiers and his guests, thanking all for his success over the past 36 months. This moment in my career could not have been possible without the support of the Muleskinner and Iron Legion family, Peterson stated. During his tenure, Peterson s battalion participated in multiple training exercises and he prepared and deployed with his unit twice. He deployed once as the support operations sergeant major and again in 2015 as the command sergeant major for the STB. The STB returned from Afghanistan in early February. Peterson also addressed the battalion commander, Lt. Col. Robin-Desty Husted. Ma am, the moment you walk through the door you can sense the energy you brought to the battalion, Peterson said. From that moment, I know you were the right fit for the organization. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to do my job. Also, I would like thank you for always supporting me, being a true friend. My time here in the STB as the battalion command sergeant major has been an experience in which I will never forget and one I will cherish for years to come. Peterson also had kind words for the first sergeants and staff members who worked under him. First sergeants, you are the backbone of your organization, Peterson said. When you look at the first sergeant, you see the representation of that unit. If the unit is great, that means there is a dedicated and exceptional first sergeant at the helm. Peterson also thanked his officers in charge and noncommissioned officers in charge of the staff sections. You are truly the heart of this battalion and I want you all to know you are greatly appreciated, Peterson said. Peterson also spoke about how important it is to surround yourself with optimistic people. I was told if you want to make a difference you surround yourself with positive people, Peterson said. I was fortunate to be surrounded around individuals that make things matter when I joined this organization. I would say to every officer, NCO and See FAREWELL Page 12A

7 Germans recognize National Day of Mourning By Wendy Brown Fort Bliss Bugle Editor The German National Day of Mourning commemorates all victims of violence and war, those persecuted and killed because people considered them different and those who lost their lives because they stood up against tyranny, among others. Lt. Col. Martin Herter, deputy commander of the German Air Force Air Defense Center, didn t have to look far for examples as he delivered the keynote speech during a ceremony marking the day at Fort Bliss National Cemetery Sunday. Near the cemetery s south entrance stand the headstones of 26 Germans buried after World War II, and Herter told the audience about the men. The youngest was 21 and the oldest soldier was 47, Herter said. They were all sergeants and corporals. There is a standard certificate of death available for everybody. On this certificate is the immediate cause of death, date, time and place of death stated. They were prisoners of war in Roswell, Lordsburg and Artesia, New Mexico, and Yuma, Pinal and Phoenix, Arizona, Herter said. Most of them died in a hospital, and two of them died at William Beaumont Army Medical Center here. One of the men was Werner Drechsler, a former German U-boat crewman who cooperated with his captors and became a spy for the allies, Herter said. Drechsler collected information about German submarine technology, operational procedures and tactics and other useful intelligence. Drechsler had a reason to help the allies: his father had spent time in one of Hitler s concentration camps as a political prisoner, Herter said. On March 12, 1944, however, authorities transferred Drechsler to a POW camp in Arizona that included former crewmates who knew of his spying activities, Herter said. Word quickly spread throughout the camp. Next morning Drechsler was found hanging in the shower room, Herter said. He had been murdered within hours of arrival at the camp. Another man committed suicide by jumping in front of a train, and another died after a farmer shot him for stealing his car during an escape attempt, Herter said. All these stories of the persons buried next to us tell about a very bad time during World War II, Herter said. With these stories you can somehow try to imagine how horrible the time of violence, destruction, crime, dictatorship, horror, tyranny and annihilation of peoples must have been. About 100 German soldiers attended, as well as several other German citizens and Americans. Members of the 1st Armored Division Band performed the U.S. and German national anthems, Goin Home, Holst Suite Number 2 Song Without Words and Der Gute Kamerad. Members of the German military observe the day, called the Volkstrauertag in German, wherever they are stationed around the globe, and a large ceremony takes place in the German capital of Berlin, said German Sgt. Maj. Peter Breuer, a GAFADC spokesman. Germans recognize the day each year two Sundays before the first day of advent, and it is supposed to be a day of quiet and silent remembrance, Breuer said. Germans are not allowed to hold public events with music and dance that day. The first official observance took place in Berlin in Herter said we have the privilege of living in freedom and peace in the U.S. and Germany, and we should never take it for granted. Establishing, keeping and defending peace is the challenge for every single one of us, but especially for us as soldiers, Herter said. A decent and humane life is only possible in peace and freedom. This is our task today, tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. Members of the 1st AD Band performed the U.S. and German national anthems, Goin Home, Holst Suite Number 2 Song Without Words, and Der Gute Kamerad during the Sunday.
