Leadership is accomplished in many differing styles: Like this Full Metal Jacket Or, perhaps this The Godfather Or maybe even this Animal House Or, dare we, And Justice for All But consider this Dead Poet s Society

Leadership Styles: Gunnery Sgt Hartman in Full Metal Jacket? Don Corleone in the Godfather? Bluto and Otter in Animal House? Judge Francis Rayford (Jack Warden) in And Justice for All? John Keating (Robin Williams) in Dead Poet s Society.

Leadership Leadership vs Management Philosophy of Leadership vs Mechanics of Leadership The concept of Servant Leadership Robert Greenleaf: Giving priority to the needs of others Problem Solving Courts and Servant Leadership

Servant Leader Characteristics Judge Samuel Thumma & Sara Beene Listening Striving to Understand Foresight Healing Awareness Persuasion Conceptualization Stewardship Commitment to the Growth of People All leading to Building Community.

The Illinois Supreme Court apparently agrees that building community is a good thing. A new Committee Commentary to SCR 64 on a Judge s extrajudicial activities indicates: A judge may serve on a committee that includes other judges and members of the community for the purpose of developing programs or initiatives aimed at improving the outcomes for juveniles involved in the juvenile court system or adults in the criminal justice system. Such programs may include diversion, restorative justice and problem-solving court programs, among others.

Judge Jeff Ford Team Leadership by Team Members

Team MUST keep its sense of mission and commitment

Team members MUST understand each other s roles

Team members MUST maintain a working knowledge of relevant issues, including: addiction mental illness, other co-occurring disorders, pharmacology, and drug testing.

Team members MUST KNOW, FOLLOW and USE evidence based practices (EBP) and services.

Team members MUST accept the responsibility to promote the value and benefits of Problem Solving Courts (PSC) to members of the Criminal Justice community.

Team members MUST accept a duty to promote public understanding of PSC concepts.

Team members should maintain an oversight (steering) committee

PSC MUST be open to all eligible persons and MUST NOT discriminate. Eligibility is NOT the likelihood of success.

Team members MUST stay abreast of research in their professional roles and in all matters that may affect the success of the PSC.

PSCs SHOULD actively monitor their program and regularly have external evaluations.
