2 Origin Since Arthur Eldred became the first Eagle Scout in 1912, the rank has represented a milestone of accomplishment perhaps without equal that is recognized across the country and even the world. Men who have earned the Eagle Scout rank count it among their most treasured possessions. Eagle Scout is not just an award; it is a state of being. Those who earned it as boys continue to earn it every day as men. That is why an Eagle Scout IS an Eagle Scout never was. 2 1/29/2016

3 Troop Advancement From Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, and finally Life ready for Eagle Scout Handbook lays out the required material, plus Merit Badges. Most Troops have two Boards of Review and COH s per year (Fall and Spring), but extra BOR s can be requested 3 1/29/2016

4 Introduction Eagle Project It s about the Scout Maturity, responsibility, leadership Parents, you will learn practical pointers to help the Scout succeed. Adult support is needed, but the Scout does the project not the adult. A lifelong memory and accomplishment. 4

6 Overview Must be Life Scout Project must be Helpful to a Religious Institution, a School, or Your Community. Must have LEADERSHIP elements contained in the project - demonstrate Scout leadership. No minimum hours for a project significant leadership Fillable Eagle packet on line, MDSC website, Forms: 6 Scout Project Benefactor

7 Selecting the Project 7 Interests the Scout (No simple Blood Drives, Gardening maintenance, Fundraising only) Quality beneficiary available (no student grant projects) Technical advisor available Parents and Scoutmaster supportive of the project How and where the project will be executed. Hours must be enough to clearly demonstrate leadership. Project and binder must be finished and approved by District prior to 18 th birthday.

8 Beneficiary 8 Must be a Religious Institution, a School, or Your Community Community can be interpreted very broadly Must have stability Must be flexible Must be communicative If the project is done on site, must be able to give the Scout time and space to do the project.

9 Technical Advisor Role Must be knowledgeable in the media of the project. Must be able to teach and coach without doing the project for the Scout. Must have a flexible attitude so that the Scout can take the lead. Must be a good cheerleader to keep the Scout going. 9

11 Unit Eagle Coach Role Coach the Scout on the process Explain the process to parents Assist the Scout with beneficiary if needed Assist the Scout with technical advisor if needed Help the Scout with District and Council as needed Expedite the Scout to complete the process Coach, Review, and Advise during proposal, final plan, and binder for Board of Review. 11

16 Execution month 2 If fundraising, letters to potential contributors, in person, in uniform is the best (copies in notebook) Collect contributions, deposit with Beneficiary or Unit OR: Donations from friends and family Purchase items, prepare location & tools for project Recruit and schedule Scout labor Determine what type of labor is needed Begin when technical advisor is available 16

17 Permission Forms Important step Tour Permit form required if travel by multiple Scouts in vehicles is required, 4 pages Must be in final project notebook, approved Many school systems require permits if work done on premises 17

18 Execution tips Eagle candidate must avoid Waiting for someone else to take charge. Social session rather than work session Lack of planning for work day, lack of labor and material 3-4 sessions, each 4 hours, with 4-5 Scouts is ideal Eagle candidate must Know what he wants to accomplish each work day 18 Have food / water, tools & safety equipment for workers

19 Photographs Photographs, before, during and after More is better than less (10 to 50) Show location pre-project Show steps during project Show Scouts doing work, directed by candidate Show completed project A picture is worth a thousand words 19

20 At the end of each work day Record the hours worked by each person Keep records by Scout and by adults Eagle candidate must show his planning hours and execution hours vs. everyone else's hours Changes made from plan, what was the impact, what was learned from the change Plan accomplishments for next work day 20

21 When the project is completed Get beneficiary s signature on Project Workbook. Suggestion, obtain a letter from the beneficiary saying the project was completed and that they are satisfied with the results Send thank you letters to contributors, workers, advisors (copies go in project notebook) Complete the Project Report page A - C photos, receipts, letters, permissions, log-in sheets, etc. 21

22 When the project is completed Schedule meeting with Unit Eagle Project Coach Review, Advice Eagle Candidate signs on Project Report Page C Completions Approvals (PR Page C) from Beneficiary and Unit Leader (Scoutmaster) Completed report in a Binder Cover sheet, your name, photos, and project name. 22

24 Eagle Binder Process & Requirements 24 Complete and approved Eagle project Eagle Rank Application is compete and accurate Positions of responsibility & rank advancement dates Unit Leader conference, signature Merit badge record at Council agrees with Scout s record, Blue Cards are the final word Correct Eagle MB at correct time Confidential Reference Letters: Teacher, Religious leader, Friend of Family (2), Parents, Employer. - Sent directly to Unit Eagle Coach, or parent if necessary Final assembly and review by Eagle Coach, Binder to District for approval, then to District BOR scheduler

26 Positions of Responsibility Eligible Position held for 6 months as Life Scout Can be multiple Positions, can be non-consecutive, can be any time while a Life Scout A Scout may not be held to an extraordinary standard of performance. Unit leaders may not expect any Scout to meet an undefined or unknown standard of performance. Otherwise, the Eagle candidate shall be presumed to have satisfactorily fulfilled this requirement. 26

27 Eagle Application Get a printout from your Unit of from Council showing the dates of Merit badges and advancements Make sure your record and Council agrees Unit Advancement Chairman help correct errors. Complete Rank Application form, get approvals: Unit Leader, Committee Chair Write requirement two essays Application & essays - inserted into binder 27

Make mailing list, friends, dignitaries, newspapers. Eagle / Parents recruit Religious Leader Invocation & Benediction
