4 Preface Artificial intelligence has experienced an important evolution over the past few years; an evolution that has been centrally influenced by Case-based reasoning (CBR), especially in the area of knowledge-based decision support. CBR has close relationships to many other AI paradigms like machine learning, induction, classification, analogy, information retrieval, and knowledge acquisition. This book considers some of the current advances that have been made in CBR and some of the papers explore these relationships to other areas of AI. The Second European Workshop on Case-Based Reasoning took place at the Abbaye de Royanmont nearby Paris, France in November This workshop followed the first EWCBR that was hosted by the University of Kaiserslautern, Germany in November EWCBR-94 was largely successful, attracting more than 150 participants from all over the world. The scientific program included invited talks, oral presentations, posters, panel discussions, system demonstrations and an industry day, thus covering the main research and application issues of CBR. Out of 60 submissions, the program committee selected 19 papers for oral presentation and 18 for the poster sessions. This book contains revised and extended versions of a subset of 22 papers that were selected by the program committee after the Workshop among the initial contributions. It shows that methods and tools related to CBR are in constant evolution. Simultaneously, substantial progress has been made in the applications domain, especially in the fields of architecture and computer-aided design, task planning, chemical synthesis, maintenance and diagnosis, and law. We would like to thank all the people who contributed to the success of EWCBR-94: the participants for the good atmosphere during and between the sessions, the staff at AcknoSoft (in particular Eric Auriol, Jerome Guiot, Sylvie Garry and Christophe Deniard), Martine Kuhlmann, Amedeo Napoli and Jean Lieber from CRIN/INRIA, and also Jacqueline Reynal and Eunika Mercier-Laurent.
