3 Hello everyone!!! Well our Fall Craft Show was a great success! Huge thanks to everyone that helped out!! What s coming up for the rest of the year?! *The Turkey Shoots coming up in Nov. The Auxiliary serves lunch on those dates. If you would like to help in the kitchen, let us know. * Our Pot-Luck holiday dinner in Dec. Bring a dish to share. * Also if anyone has an interest and/or extra time, we can always use help in the kitchen for our Friday night bingo kitchen. Any help would be greatly appreciated! As some of our members are getting a little older and want to retire from Auxiliary work, and the passing of some of our amazing members, we really need to get some more new auxiliary members. If anyone has anyone that they know of who would like to be an Auxiliary member, sign them up. Or if you have an idea of how we can recruit new members, I would love to hear about it!! Just a couple of reminders: *Please also remember that our dues have increased by $6.00 ($26). This increase will not take effect until Jan, so if anyone wants to renew at the old price of $20. You can still do that before the end of the year. And this also applies to new members joining us. *The hard copy newsletter will NOT be mailed after the first of the year, so if you would like to have the newsletter mailed electronically, simply the post (PnPost76@gmail.com) to sign up to have the newsletter sent. If you do not have access to the internet and still want to receive a hard copy of the newsletter please call the post (630) and leave me a message with your name and phone number, and I will get a hard copy mailed to you. 4 PERROTTET-NICKERSON POST 76 AMERICAN LEGION Minutes of the regular meeting held 6 October 2015 Call to Order: Commander Mischler called the meeting to order at 1930 hours. The colors were saluted, Chaplain Luboff offered opening prayer. The POW/MIA flag was properly placed on an empty chair in accordance with National Resolution 288. The pledge of allegiance and the Preamble of the Constitution of the American Legion were recited in due form. Commander Mischler introduced guest, County Commander, Don Lindsey Reading of Minutes: The minutes of the meeting of 1 September 2015 have been published and copies circulated around the Post hall. Motion by Miller, second by Fagel to approve. Motion passed. Committee Reports: Adjutant: Andersen noted that National has approved a $5.00 per year increase in per capita. The Post Executive Board has voted to increase Post dues to $40.00 effective 1 December Finance Officer: Meyer reported the Post bank balance. Motion by Luboff, seconded by Miller to approve report subject to audit. Motion passed. Senior Vice Commander: 2016 year membership stands at 171/ % Junior Vice Commander: Stange mentioned that there are two courses available for food handling; 1 an online course for Certified Food Handler at a cost of $15.00; and 2 a classroom course for Food Service Sanitation Manager at a cost of $ The latter is required for the Post kitchen to be properly certified. Stange will take the course, and the Post will pay the required fee. Ideas for the family dinner to be held on 4 December are being discussed, and the menu will be finalized by the next Executive Board meeting. Color Guard: No report Building & Grounds: No report Auxiliary: The Auxiliary will pay for Mattingly s Food Service Sanitation Manager s certification course. Motion by Luboff, second by Fagel, to share cost of Jim and Barbara Goepel s attendance at the Carol Stream Citizen of the Year dinner. Cost - $ Motion passed. SAL: Anderko said there will be no meeting in October. Membership stands at 38/50 76% Baseball: No report Boy Scouts: No report Boys State: No report Sick Call & Memorials: Sgt. at Arms Elmer Branscum is hospitalized again. Larry Hoffman is doing very well as he continues his recovery. Service Officer: Fixler noted there will be a Veteran Resource and Job Fair held 30 October at Elgin Community College. 5 On 7 November, a Veterans Expo & Blood Drive will be held at Post 80 in Downers Grove. This is a resource event, not for job placement. Luboff noted that on 12 November he will be participating in a presentation devoted to veterans startup businesses. Event to be held at Governors State University. A new state law, effective 1 January 2016 provides disabled veterans with property tax relief benefits, depending on VA certified disability levels: 30% to 40% disability a $2,500 reduction in property assessed valuation; 50% to 60% - a $5,000 reduction in property assessed valuation; 70% or higher no property taxes. Forms available through the VA. There will be no tax breaks available to veterans widows/widowers. County: Fagel discussed membership, with particular emphasis on five year renewals. Later this year, County will be making phone calls to expired members and 2910 members in an effort to boost membership for Posts in the county. Kane County is close to matching DuPage County s numbers, and we want to stay number one in the District. Asked for increased member attendance at County meetings, particularly that of Commander and Adjutant. County Commander Lindsey commented on membership efforts, including setting up a call center to contact 2910 members. County will be working with each Post to review and update as necessary, their Constitution and By-Laws. Old Business: None. New Business: Luboff noted the opening of a Cosmopolitan Food Market in Aurora that has on site meat processing facilities. This could be a possible sources for Post s purchase of meat and poultry for its events. Would like someone from the Post to visit with him to determine viability as a source. Lykins mentioned that workers are needed for the bingo like raffle to be held on 25 October. Goepel mentioned that forms for Holiday baskets will be available on 9 October. We should concentrate on veterans families, as, per usual, the demand for assistance far exceeds available resources. Good of the Legion: Goepel advised that Aldi s has guaranteed availability of turkeys for the Fall Shoots. We will also be upgrading the quality of hams to be given out this year. Target marking on 8 October! Help is needed at Friday night Bingo! Alden noted that the Post website is being updated. Each unit will have the ability to update information respective to their section of the site. Lindsey broached the subject of an All County All Post holiday party. Miller, as Chairman of the Building & Grounds Nominating Committee, cited the following nominees suggested at the last meeting: Fietsam, Mischler, Meyer, and Andersen. There being no further nominations from the floor, Mischler moved, Fagel seconded, that nominations be closed. Motion passed. Luboff moved, Fagel seconded that the nominees by elected unanimously by acclamation. By unanimous vote, the motion passed. Calendar Review: The calendar for the next two months was reviewed. Next Post meeting on 3 November. Commanders Comments: The POW/MIA flag was recovered. Luboff offered the closing prayer and the colors were saluted. CHICAGOLAND LOCATION: November 6, 3pm - 8pm, American Legion Post 330, Calumet City Even if you don t live near a community with a Buzz Cut Challenge event, you can still participate. In fact, you don t even have to get a buzz cut. Here are some ways you can help: Donate online Challenge family, friends, police officers, firefighters, local sports teams, teachers and others to join you using #BuzzCutChallenge on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram Not keen on a buzz cut but still need a haircut? On Veterans Day (Nov. 11, 2015), all U.S. Great Clips salons are giving their customers a way to thank veterans. * Here s how it works: All non-veteran customers who get a service at Great Clips on Veterans Day get a free haircut card they can give to a veteran as a thank you. All veterans who visit Great Clips on Veterans Day get either a free haircut that day or a free haircut card to use later. Veterans have from Nov. 12 to Dec. 31, 2015 to redeem the free haircut card at any U.S. Great Clips salon. A word about the VFW & Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarship Program Each scholarship will provide recipients with up to $5,000 to apply toward their education at an accredited post secondary institution, including universities, colleges and trade schools. While the program is funded by Sport Clips' Help A Hero campaign, the VFW manages the scholarship program. Management functions include accepting applications, determining and awarding recipients, notification of award determinations and denials, and administering scholarships directly to the schools. The scholarship application is available online at VFW.org. Go to the "Assistance" page and click "College Scholarships". You will find a program overview, a helpful Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) guide, and a link to the application. Please note: Application must be submitted online using the form on VFW.org.
