1 P1 Georgia s Eagles taking care of All Veterans. All for one and o DEPARTMENT OF GEORGIA Auxiliary May 2017 News ''Georgia Peaches and Magnolia Blooms Growing Support for Our Veterans. Georgia Peaches and Magnolia Blooms Growing Support for Our Veterans. ALA MEMBERS ORDER FORM all ; AUXILIARY NEWS American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Georgia, 3035 Mt Zion Rd, Stockbridge, GA amlegaux@bellsouth.net INSIDE THIS ISSUE A Word from the President By Miriam Stein, Department President Auxiliary Members, The year is coming to a close. Thank you so much for all the cards and prayers during my illness. I really appreciated them very much. I hope everyone had a nice Easter. May is a very busy month for the auxiliary. Everyone is getting ready for Memorial Day. Putting out flags on veterans graves and putting out crosses for our fallen veterans. Volume 7, Issue 11 From President Miriam Stein 1 Secretary 2 1 st Vice President /Leadership 2 2nd Vice President / Membership 3 Historian 3 Chaplain 4 Constitution/By-Laws Various items 5 Past Presidents Parley Luncheon form 6 Poppy Anchor Launching/ Junior Convention info 7 Calendar of Events 8 I am very sorry that we lost another great lady Betty Turner. I didn t get to her funeral because of having surgery but Mr. Bob was in my prayers. Elections are held now for new officers. You need to remember to do what is best for the auxiliary. Please remember to send all the data to Dept. Officers and chairmen don t forget the dead line for reports to National. It is very important that National receives these reports. It is time to make your reservations for the Dept. Convention. Please get them made. We are getting ready for the Poppy Anchor launching at Tybee Island on Memorial Day. I would like to thank Wanda for all her work at Tybee. I would like to thank the 7 th District for a beautiful Anchor. Well, ladies there is still time to get those memberships into the Dept. Please keep working on it for Jane. Patty and Krista, thank each of you for all you do at headquarters. You make my job easier. Thank you for all you do for our veterans and active duty personnel. For God and Country, American Legion Auxiliary Honor Our Female Veterans For Female Veterans who join as new members for the 2017 Membership Year, the national portion of dues ($9.00) will be waived for their first year of membership. The American Legion Auxiliary Department of Georgia voted at our Fall Conference October 23, 2015, For Female Veterans who join as new members for the 2017 Membership Year, the Department s portion of dues ($8.00) will be waived for their first year of membership. Some of the Units are waiving their membership portion as well. Ladies this is one way we can Honor Our Female Veterans and build our membership. Make them feel welcome!

2 P2 Secretary By Patty Hawkins, Department Secretary Time to get ready for the Department Convention and the National Convention. Forms for hotels are on the website as well as in the newsletter. Don t wait until the last day to get your rooms, as they sometimes get filled up real quick. Delinquent Notices went out April 21 st! They were mailed to the Unit Presidents. We will NOT be collecting any monies at the Department Convention in Duluth for Obligations. They must be paid and into the department 15 days prior to Convention.. The deadline to be received into the Department Headquarters is May 30, This is very important, our Convention will be here before you know it and in order to vote the Obligation must be paid. Remember we voted NOT TO ACCEPT any payments for Obligations at the Convention. If you are planning on coming to the Department Convention and are not sure if your Unit s Obligations have been paid check with your Unit President or Treasurer. NO EXCEPTION!!!. Our Membership goal is at 67.64%. Ladies we are behind where we were this time last year, so let s see that extra effort I know you are willing to help get us as close or beyond the 100%. We do really need to concentrate on our juniors. Bring them in and let them help us build up our units. You might be surprised what our youth are capable of and their willingness to help if only asked. Membership has slowed down. I know there has to be members that have not been contacted about their dues. Why not get a group together and call those members, let them know you miss them and that their membership means a lot. It is for our Veterans that we Honor. It is better to have too many than not enough Have you made you reservation for the Department Convention held in June? Have you pre-registered to save time and money? If you pre-register the cost is only $20.00 if paid prior to MAY 25 th, after May 25 th will cost $ Everyone has to pay in order to attend the meetings. How about the Banquet? And don t forget about our Past Department Parley Luncheon? Newsletter May Newsletter 1 st Vice President / Leadership By Anitia Owens, Department 1 st Vice President We are now in the last part of our Auxiliary year and busy with preparing reports on all the activities we have been doing for our veterans, communities and children and youth throughout this year. I hope that each of you will at least submit one report detailing this information. Remember as we discussed in our Leadership Workshops, if we do not spread the word on what we are doing, how Congress will allow us to stay in existence is in jeopardy. I hope you enjoyed our Spring Conference and the discussion on Constitution and Bylaws and Standing Rules held at Legion College. I believe a lot of valuable information was shared by all in this open discussion session. You know that learning something new is a major growth step in each of us and then using that knowledge to share with others is even greater. As we continue to move forward in the upcoming year, I ask each of you to look at what is needed to train our members to move forward in leadership, we need to start training at the Unit level on the responsibilities and roles of the officers and work with those who are new and need a helping hand. As much as we would all like to stay here forever that will not happen and in order to survive we have to share our knowledge. Change is good even if it sometimes has its ups and downs. As always, if I can help your in any way, do not hesitate to call or me. For God and Country Anitia Owens 1 st Vice President The world is full of nice people. If you can t find one, BE ONE.

3 P3 2 nd Vice President/Membership By Jane Lawrence, Department 2 nd Vice President HOW EVOLUTION year share Thank contributing Memory all for in Awards. seeing of judging. comes the THE you leaving Program. Units you to HISTORY Great to all an our who department memories of end, Job A History the submitted Big we Ladies! Units, COMMITTEE shout have with and convention and I m your had Cavalcade out Districts looking so members. History Thank much with As of forward - Books to the you our to # HISTORIAN CORNER By Valerie Brown-Debro, Department Historian To each Membership Chairman and all members, I would like to say "Thank You" for all the hard work that you have done this year on membership We still have a long way to go. At the present time we only have six (8) Units that are at a 100% or more. There are several very close to their goal. There are a lot of members that have not renewed from last year. Do you know why? If not call them and find out. Maybe that is all it will take for them to renew. Let's get started on those members to increase the percentage for your Unit, District and Department. Please encourage your members to get their membership in to support our wonderful organization and continue to support our Veterans. The Auxiliary History, at all levels is not just in the artifacts we keep. We all have objects donated by or on behalf of our past presidents, but we also have photos of them and the activities of the units/department and national. They are all of our governing documents, Constitution and Bylaws, policies and procedures etc, newsletters, reports, meeting minutes that help to tell our story. The idea is that it takes all of us to make the history, the historian to write it. And the Cavalcade/History committee chairman to make sure that it is preserved so that we can all look back when we need to share the story with everyone, and continue to move forward in our mission. Thank you for reporting your History in serving our veterans, their families and our communities. Valerie Brown-Debro Department of Georgia Historian This year membership has been a challenge, but we have worked hard and still are. We need members to keep our organization operating, so please don't STOP trying to increase our membership. The more we have the bigger voice we have in Congress. For God & Country Again, "THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO". For God and Country
