1 MILITARY OFFICERS ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA Central Florida Chapter F CUS Orlando > Four Star Chapter 2003,2004,2006,2009,2010 (Five Star) June 2017 Volume 60 Issue 6 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE COL William J. Gates, USAF, Ret. President Inside this issue: Key Personnel & phone numbers Help Your Survivors Now Chapter Board Meeting Chaplain s Message Legislative HELP! I ended my last article for the FOCUS with that word and begin this one with it. The Central Florida Chapter of MOAA has been a vibrant leader in Florida for over 50 years. It still is a leadership organization and among the top 5 in membership in the state. Age group participation has understandably become an issue. OK, we can't play golf. A walk in the park is fine, but not when it was planned. We get it. However, if we adjust our gatherings to easy and comfortable will you come and socialize? In lieu of the monthly luncheon, I'm suggesting a pay as you go event under $25, with food, fun, entertainment. BOTTOMLINE: we need to start knowing who we are to each other. Announcement: I am not well. I told the Board May 13th that I could not be affective as president because of health issues. Rick Jung will assume the president role. As I told the Board, the chapter belongs to the members. Each of them already knew that. I just want you to speak up and get active in our chapter. What we have done with the JROTC Scholarship Program, ramps for Vets, Wounded Warriors, USO and community is at the top of the food chain nationally. Come on, MIke Patterson, Bob LePage, Joe Hines and the Board can't do it all. Thanks for stepping up! Stay safe and healthy. Bill Gates Special Offer Life Membership JROTC Leadership Award Insurance Citrus Club Membership Nominations of Officers ROTC /JROTC Leadership Awards TAPS Volunteers Membership Application 7 DATES TO NOTE! HELP YOUR SURVIVORS NOW If you have a family, one of the most important things you can do during your lifetime is laying out the plans to take care of your family after you die. Upon your death, your survivors can expect to receive certain payments and benefits from the federal government, but it s up to you to help your survivors. MOAA has several publications, listed below, which will give you an excellent start in this process. You can request these documents by or by calling Help Your Survivors Now A Guide to Planning Ahead - Survivor Benefit Plan Security for Your Survivors - Survivor s Checklist First Steps for Moving On Also, you can request assistance in Orlando from the Retired Activities Office Phone: and Fax: Office hours are 10:00 am 2:00 pm Monday through Friday. Personnel at this office are all retired military and they can provide you with the various agencies and telephone numbers to include notifying the retired finance center. Your survivors should know the location of your insurance policies, retirement orders, birth certificate, your current Retiree Account Statement and any other documents of importance before and after your death. Published monthly except July by the Military Officers Association of America Central Florida Chapter, Inc. P.O. Box , Orlando, FL, The Chapter is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization, affiliated with National MOAA and the Florida Council of Chapters, MOAA, but not associated with the Department of Defense. The views expressed are not necessarily those of MOAA, the Florida Council of Chapters, or the Department of Defense.

An Armed Forces Appreciation Event is scheduled for May 25 at the Citrus Club in Orlando. Call for details. COL Jung will become the interim President of the Chapter for the remainder of the year. The meeting was adjourned at 1050 hours. Looking ahead: Luncheon May 20 Appreciation Day Event at the Citrus Club May 25 Next Board Meeting June 10 Respectfully submitted, Patricia Green, Secretary Chaplain s Message We come within hours, sometimes minutes of shutting the government down, with the President signing a financial bill minutes before midnight. The President issues executive orders and judges stop them from being enforced. The Republicans demand one thing, the Democrats another, and it seems impossible to reach a compromise. Third world nations develop nuclear weapons and intercontinental missiles with which to send them to devastate another country. Terrorists use suicide bombers and even employ speeding cars and trucks to wreck as much havoc as they can, not even exempting weddings or funerals from their targets. Here we are in the month of June, when weddings, vacations, and other pleasures are front and center, but the cited dangers can suddenly disrupt those pleasant plans. We live in a dangerous world, and you never know from one day to the next what horror will be perpetrated on innocent people, even babies not excluded. Perhaps things were just as uncertain in the early days of World War II, when there was no assurance that the Imperial Japanese war lords and the Nazis and fascists would not prevail, but at lease you knew who the enemy was then, and where you d have to face him. In all of this, I can find one comfort: God is still on the throne. He has given the human race free will, and unfortunately the nature of that race is such that evil people of the vilest kind emerge to commit these atrocities. Still, though, I m reminded of a passage in the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible which says: Job 1:12 The LORD said to Satan, "Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger..." God still has ultimate control, as this verse indicates. The sensing of the Hebrew translated do not lay a finger is that Satan could not do permanent physical harm or kill Job. The horrors that occupy the news every day are inspired by Satan, and we need to pray that the Lord would once again stay the devil s hand. You and I cannot control evil, but we can pray fervently to the One Who can. In His love, Chaplain Dick
