1 9th WOMESA Conference, Training & AGM 26 to 28 September, 2018 Hotel Colbert, Antananarivo, Madagascar Challenges of Maritime Women in Professionalization of the Maritime Sector Women

2 FORWARD Mrs. Veronica Nduati Maina Head of Secretariat WOMESA Region The 9th Annual WOMESA Conference & AGM brings together Women working in the Maritime sector in East and Southern Africa Region. Many Thanks to International Maritime Organisation for supporting this event fully in pursuit of advancing the quest for Gender Equality within the Maritime Sector. WOMESA continues to strive in promoting women access to quality employment and opportunities in key decision making positions within the Maritime Industry. Undoubtedly the blue economy offers numerous opportunities for both male and female to work both at sea and offshore. However, the reality has seen women being excluded from some of the available opportunities. The journey to gender equality in the maritime sector, like in many other sectors has its own curves. WOMESA is dedicated to finding solutions to the factors that hinder the advancement of women within this male dominated sector. The choice of speakers are distinguished women with wealth of experiences within the sector. With their support and guidance the forum will explore strategies of designing practical programmes to improve effectiveness in achieving inclusive and sustainable development. The conference is therefore a befitting forum and a unique opportunity to launch the youngest national chapter, WOMESA MADAGASCAR, in the company of delegates representing the entire WOMESA fraternity from the member states in the region. Our hearty congratulations to our sisters in Madagascar! We trust the formation of this new Chapter will propel the growth in the number of girls taking up maritime related subject in schools, and women pursuing courses and training in the Maritime industry. I wish all the participants, fruitful deliberations at this momentous occasion! Together we will make it! Mrs. Veronica N Maina 1 Women

3 About the Conference Decades after the first women dared to venture into the maritime sector; women still find themselves a minority in the mainstream maritime sector. A significant number of women work in support or rudimentary functions which unfortunately do not give them the muscle to effectively impact the sector. Thanks to affirmative action led by IMO through the SDGs on gender equality, opted for capacity building to facilitate professional growth of women in the maritime sector. The formation of WOMESA has afforded women from Eastern & Southern Africa a forum to not only take stock of their strides but to also map out strategies to ensure meaningful integration into the maritime sector. While acknowledging that the maritime sector is still at its infancy in many parts of Africa yet it is certainly the most strategic industry given that most of the world s trade is facilitated by sea. Therefore it is not an overstatement that this sector has tremendous potential that remains untapped. Suffice it to say that women now more than any other time need to position themselves strategically to benefit from the opportunities in the maritime sector. There is need to critically examine the circumstances that impede professional growth of women in the maritime sector while tapping into the knowledge, skills and lessons learnt from the few women who have managed to beat the odds and make a breakthrough in the maritime sector. Women 2

4 Benefits of attending: The 9th WOMESA Association of Women Managers in the Maritime Sector in the Eastern and Southern Africa Conference will be an exclusive opportunity providing eminent female personalities from the shipping and maritime industry a unique platform to network as witnessing the launch of yet another WOMESA National chapter Madagascar. It will enable delegates: To meet up, and share experiences with other women with similar challenges and opportunities in the maritime sector. To get tips for success and learn from others in similar positions from the maritime sectors. To get insights about career and business opportunities available to women in the maritime sector. To initiate remedial measures to address the skills shortages in the maritime sector. To illustrate the contribution of women from the maritime sector to the ocean economy To enhance the participation of women in the growth of marine infrastructure. To deliberate on issues of safety, reliability, effectiveness, efficiency, and fully integrated maritime security operations that best meet the needs of the women. Speakers: 1.
