10 District 5020 Literacy Awards (2012-) Nominators: Club President Deadline: April 15 Rotary knows that literacy is an essential ingredient for reducing poverty, improving health, encouraging community and economic development, and promoting peace. The District 5020 Literacy Award will recognize Rotary clubs that achieve an array of accomplishments that help them become stronger, deliver effective service, and enhance their public image. 12 District Membership Award (pending update for ) In the club categories of: 1. Up to 49 members members or over members First Award: District recognition of the clubs with the highest percentage increase in membership Second Award: For the clubs with the highest absolute net gain in membership Third Award: To recognize the criticality of attracting younger members, a further District award in each club category will be made to the clubs gaining the most new members under forty-five (45) years of age as of March 31 as a percentage of their total new members in the year. Base numbers will be those effective as of March 31. Final calculations will be made against changes there from, to March 31. No specific awards will be made for 'retention' though this important aspect of membership will, of course, be reflected in results achieved. There will be no award for member attendance but clubs are encouraged to establish their own mechanism for recognizing members' achievements in this area - remembering that good attendance is closely related to the quality of meeting management and speakers. To be eligible for recognition, clubs are responsible to file their membership returns promptly and accurately. Page 12 of 93

13 Rotary International Recognition of Membership Development Initiatives (MDI) Nominators: District Governors Deadlines: District Governors must receive submissions from clubs by 15 April. RI must receive submission forms from district governors by 15 May. 23 The Floyd Olson International Club of the Year Award (Pending update for ) Nominators: Club President Deadline: May 12 th Initiated , the award is in recognition of a club in District 5020 with the greatest effort (dollars spent/capita) on clean water & sanitation projects. The award comes with a $500 contribution toward a future international project. This is the only award in the District with a monetary award. 28 RI Recognition of Outstanding Rotaract Projects Nominators: Rotaract Club President Deadline: February 1 - Applications are submitted on-line to: E ach year, Rotaract clubs worldwide submit details about their exceptional community or international service projects to RI. Seven of these clubs are selected as Outstanding Rotaract Project Award recipients. Winning clubs receive a plaque and the opportunity to present their projects at the annual Rotaract Preconvention Meeting. Starting in the Rotary year, you will be able to submit a nomination form online. Submitting nominations in this format will improve the award selection process and allow award recipients to be notified more quickly. Additionally, there are new criteria for the award beginning in the Rotary year. Projects are evaluated on how much they excel in the following areas: 1 Impact and sustainability (25 percent); 2. Alignment with Rotary s six areas of focus and promotion of Rotary s commitment to change the lives locally and internationally (25 percent); 3. Collaboration with Rotarians and community organizations to enhance effectiveness (20 percent); 4. Innovation (15 percent); 5. Percentage of Rotaract club members involved in development and implementation of project (15 percent). Optional Supporting Materials Project submissions may include links to online photographs, videos, blogs, social media sites, local media coverage, and other information that demonstrate the reach and impact of the project submission. Members of the award panel will consider this information as they review your nomination. District governors may grant this award to up to 10 deserving Rotarians from their district each year. This award is administered at the district level. There are several award categories: Gold pin and certificate: for Rotarians bringing 25 members into any Rotary club, with 20 still active after 6 years Silver pin and certificate: for Rotarians bringing 10 members into any Rotary club, with 8 still active after 4 years Bronze pin and certificate: for Rotarians bringing five members into any Rotary club, with four still active after 2 years Certificates and pins may be purchased through Rotary International. 51 District Paul Harris Society Award Nominators: Club President Deadline: April 15 Where: District 5020 Link to EREY Eligibility Report: The Paul Harris Society is a district-administered recognition for those who elect to personally contribute US$ 1,000 or more each year to the Annual Fund, Polio Plus, or an approved Foundation grant. Individual districts handle all associated recognition for this program, and Inquiries should be directed to the district. Paul Harris Society contributions count toward Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member, Paul Harris Fellow, Multiple Paul Harris Fellow, and Major Donor Recognition. 53 The Rotary Foundation Individual Donor Recognition Awards The Rotary Foundation (TRF) offers several ways to recognize Rotarians and Friends for their generous support. What to expect after your gift The Rotary Foundation will Send letters of appreciation for all gifts Send s for gift acknowledgments and tax receipts (if applicable) from gifts received from or at the Foundation's Chicago bank. attachments from the address " " with the subject heading "A note of thanks from The Rotary Foundation" are legitimate and safe to open. Honor requests for privacy (if a donor wishes to remain anonymous, the Foundation must be notified when the gift is made) Subtract the fair market value of recognition items from receipts when required to do so by U.S. law Acknowledge major gift pledges at their full value when written documentation and an initial gift payment are received A complete guide of instructions and forms ( All 21 Pages) can be found at: The following pages contain a sampling of some of the common individual donor categories Sustaining Member Anyone who contributes US $100 or more per year to the Annual Fund is automatically recognized as a Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member. Sustaining Members are critical to the Foundation. If every club member contributed $100 every year, Rotary could nearly double its efforts to help needy people worldwide and support the continued growth of its programs. All gifts cumulatively count toward other Foundation recognition programs. Page 53 of 93

54 Benefactor You may become a Benefactor by making the Permanent Fund a beneficiary in your estate plans or by donating $1,000 or more to the fund outright. Benefactors receive a custom certificate and insignia to wear with a Rotary or Paul Harris Fellow pin. Bequest Society Couples or individuals who have made commitments of $10,000 or more in their estate plans, such as in a will, living trust, or through whole or universal life insurance, can become Bequest Society members. All Bequest Society members receive recognition from the Trustees of The Rotary Foundation. Donors may elect to receive an engraved crystal recognition piece and a Bequest Society pin. Unless you request to not receive recognition you will be recognized automatically upon notification of your bequest commitment. Paul Harris Fellow Donors of US$1,000 or more to the Annual Fund, PolioPlus, or an approved Foundation grant, or people who have that amount contributed in their name, can be recognized as Paul Harris Fellows. Major Donor The Rotary Foundation recognizes couples or individuals whose combined personal, or cumulative giving has reached $10,000. All outright contributions made to the Foundation are included in this total, regardless of the gift designation. Donors may elect to receive a crystal recognition piece and a Major Donor lapel pin or pendant. 55 Arch C. Klumph Society Donors whose cumulative gifts total US $250,000 qualify for the Arch C. Klumph Society. Qualifiers are invited to an induction ceremony at RI headquarters in Evanston, and their pictures and biographies are installed in the Arch C. Klumph Society interactive gallery. Arch C. Klumph Society members also receive invitations to special society events, along with membership pins and crystals that commemorate giving at each level. 56 Avenues of Service Citation Nominators: Club Presidents Deadline: Ongoing This citation program provides a way for Rotary clubs to personally recognize one club member for his or her outstanding efforts in the five Avenues of Service. A club member must have demonstrated support of the Object of Rotary through active participation in each of the five Avenues of Service: Club, Vocational, Community, International, and New Generations. 58 Rotary International Vocational Service Leadership Award Nominators: District Governors Deadline: 1 November ( No longer eligible for the Rotary Year) This award is given to Rotarians who have used their occupation to make an impact in the community, demonstrated integrity in their profession and in Rotary, and undertaken at least one of six activities outlined in the award guidelines that we outline in the nomination form. 59 District 5020 Energizer Award Nominators: Club President/Board of Directors Deadline: District Governor s visits to Clubs The District Energizer Award is awarded by the District Governor during his club visits to the Club Member who has gone about his/her Rotary work with the most vigor and enthusiasm. The recipient is selected by the Club President/Board of Directors. The award is an Energizer pin. Page 59 of 93

60 Service Award for a Polio-Free World Nominators: Any Rotarian Deadline: 1 November (No longer eligible for the Rotary Year) This award was established by the Trustees of the Rotary Foundation in order to recognize outstanding contributions to the effort by Rotarians and thereby to encourage final efforts. In geographic areas coinciding with WHO regions, up to ten regional service awards per region are given annually. These awards recognize outstanding service in polio eradication. International Awards, for broad service to the cause of polio eradication, are also made annually, not to exceed ten individuals. 68 Family and Community Service Award Nominators: District Governors Deadline: March 15 This award is a certificate that Rotary Clubs may confer on individuals or organizations for outstanding service to families and communities, or in recognition of the positive contributions to individual Rotary clubs made by spouses or family members of Rotarians. It is a good way for clubs to celebrate Family Month in December, recognize members of the family of Rotary, and promote Rotary in the community. 69 The Rotary Foundation Alumni Association of the Year Award Nominators: Regional Rotary Foundation coordinators (RRFC) Deadline: 1 October ( No longer eligible for the Rotary Year) The Rotary Foundation Alumni Association of the Year Award recognizes an alumni association that has increased awareness of the contributions and impact alumni have made on Foundation programs. The winning association receives a plaque or banner, recognition in Rotary media, and the opportunity to present its work at the Rotary Alumni Celebration at the RI Convention. 71 Nominators: District Governors Deadline: 1 March The Rotarian Spouse/Partner Service Award recognizes spouses and partners of Rotarians who have demonstrated exemplary humanitarian service through Rotary. Up to 100 individuals may be selected to receive this award annually. Recipients will be selected by an officer appointed by the RI president. 73 Nominators: District Governors Deadline: March 1 The White House will honor U.S. Rotary club members from across the country as Champions of Change for their volunteer work to improve the lives of others either in their communities or abroad during the second-ever Rotary Day at the White House on April 5, Nomination Guidelines: District Governors have the opportunity to nominate TWO candidates from their district that meet the recognition criteria. There are two nomination categories: DOMESTIC: This nomination category is for a Rotarian whose outstanding volunteer work is largely focused on addressing humanitarian concerns within the United States. INTERNATIONAL: This nomination category is for a Rotarian whose outstanding volunteer work has been primarily focused on addressing an international humanitarian challenge outside the United States. Nomination of an INTERNATIONAL candidate is optional, but all nominating districts are required to submit a nomination in the DOMESTIC category. 82 Peace Fellowships Deadline Dates: The deadline for submitting applications to Rotary International is 1 July The deadline for submitting to a local club can vary (generally March June). Description Each year, Rotary funds some of the world s most dedicated and brightest professionals to study at our Rotary Peace Centers. These fellows are committed to the advancement of peace, and often go on to serve as leaders in national governments, NGOs, the military, law enforcement, and international organizations such as the United Nations and World Bank. What are Rotary Peace Fellowships? Each year, Rotary selects individuals from around the world to receive fully funded academic fellowships at one of our peace centers. These fellowships cover tuition and fees, room and board, round-trip transportation, and all internship/field study expenses. Two types of peace fellowships are available. Master's degree We offer master s degree fellowships at premier universities in fields related to peace and conflict resolution and prevention. Programs last months and require a practical internship of 2 3 months during the academic break. Each year we award up to 50 master s fellowships from these institutions: Duke University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, US International Christian University, Japan University of Bradford, UK University of Queensland, Australia Uppsala University, Sweden Professional Development Certificate For those with more extensive experience in peace-related fields, we offer a 3-month program in peace and conflict resolution at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. This program incorporates 2 3 weeks of field study. We award up to 50 certificates each year. Page 82 of 93

83 Is the Peace Fellowship A Good Fit? We select fellows from around the world, based on their ability to have a significant, positive impact on the world. To be considered for a peace fellowship, we look for: A strong commitment to international understanding and peace, demonstrated through professional and academic achievements and personal and community service A bachelor s degree or equivalent experience (at a minimum) with strong academic achievement Relevant work experience: For master s degree 3 years paid or unpaid For professional development certificate 5 years and current full-time employment in a mid- to upper-level position Proficiency in English for both fellowship types and in a second language for master s degree What are the restrictions? The following are not eligible for master s degree fellowships: Active and honorary Rotarians Employees of a Rotary club, Rotary district, Rotary International, or other Rotary entity Spouses, lineal descendants (children or grandchildren by blood or legal adoption), spouses of lineal descendants, or ancestors (parents or grandparents by blood) of any living person in the categories above Former Rotarians and their relatives as described above (within 36 months of resignation) Additionally, fellows in the professional development program or participants in Rotary s former Ambassadorial Scholarships program must wait at least three years before they can apply for the master s degree fellowship. How to apply: To apply for a peace fellowship, download the application, complete the applicant portion, and submit it to a Rotary club or district for endorsement.
