Writing the UU report is one of the university s conditions to receive and keep the grant. Only after submitting this report your Erasmus+ grant will be awarded definitively. Your report will be made available (anonymously) to UU students preparing an exchange or research period abroad. Not all of them are Dutch-speaking, therefore we prefer to receive reports written in English. family name Please use Tab to go to the next (text) box. first name student number address faculty/college optional; only if you don t mind students preparing for study abroad contacting you directly niels_van_bree@hotmail.com Faculty of Science level bachelor s master s PhD name study programme Computer Science destination city & country name university abroad start date end date Brno, Czech Republic Masaryk University 09 / 09 / 2016 (dd/mm/yyyy) 18 / 02 / 2017 (dd/mm/yyyy) exchange application process You are requested to write on the following topics. There is basically one online page which you need to fill in and upload some documents to. This application will be send to you by . Contact with Masaryk university was also very quick and easy, because the person that was in charge of communicating with Erasmus students always responded within 1 or 2 days. counselling & support at Utrecht University Counseling and support at Utrecht University was quick and clear. Whenever I had a question, it was answered within a few days and I knew what I had to do. academic preparation There was no special academic preperation needed. language preparation All the courses that I took where in English, so there was no need to make a language preperation. I did, however, take a Czech language course in the summer before I went on exchange, because I wanted to learn the basics of Czech. If you are thinking of learning the local language, you should definitely consider doing this, as it is an amzing experience, a good introduction to the city and you will have less problems communicating with UU Erasmus+ report deadlines: 1 March 2017 for 1 st semester ~ 1 July 2017 for 2 nd semester or full year exchange page 1 of 4

locals! finances Brno is a very cheap city, so for my stay there it didn't cost me too much. However, a lot of people are travelling almost every weekend (including me), because Brno's location if perfect for travelling to a lot of cool destinations. If you are planning to do this, you should definitely have a buffer. STUDY ABROAD PERIOD study programme (content and organisational issues) I followed a Czech language course during my Erasmus exchange, and the rest of the courses I did where from the Central European Study Programme, which focuses on history and politics of the Central European region. It was completely out of my own study programme, but I chose these topics, because I wanted to learn more about the region I was going to. For this purpose, most of the courses were interesting and gave me the feeling I was integrating a bit more into the region than my fellow Erasmus students, but don't expect too much of the academic quality of the courses. academic quality of education activities The acadamic quality of the courses was not that high as you could pass the courses pretty easy with an A or a B, and the courses did not go into much detail. However, most teachers explained the content of the courses well and their English was sufficient. All the information regarding the courses was also up to date and easily accessible. counselling & support at receiving university abroad The counselling & support at Masaryk University was amazingly good, as the contact persons were almost always available and responed as soon as they could. The teachers I had were very helpful as well. transfer of credits I haven't transerred my credits yet, but there is a clear overvieuw of the credits and grades you have obtained so far in their student website. welcome & orientation programme STUDENT LIFE There is one welcoming week, where various activities are planned to explore the city, get to know each other better and learn about their information system. Because of the huge amount of students, the orientation week activities always had some delay, but you will not be bored, as you will meet a lot of new people during the waiting. The fun activities are a good way to meet new people and break the ice. accommodation I was living in the dorm Vinarska, which was a dorm specially designed for exchange students. If you are going to Brno, I definitely recommend you to go there, as most exchange students will be there and it will be a lot easier to meet up with your friends and make new ones. The dorm itself is not bad and not good. It has some disadvantages, such as a full laundry schedule and some of the rooms are not renovated (the kitchen and bathroom will be old in these rooms). The renovated rooms though, have a decent kitchen and bathroom. You will share a room with one other person, unless you are one of the lucky ones to get a single room (Like me. If you want tips on how to book such a room, feel free to me). However, sharing a room with another person isn't so bad as I initially thought, because in almost all the cases I have seen here the two people got along just fine and didn't mind living together. If you really don't get along with your roommate, there is always the possibility to change rooms with someone else. There are some more dorms, but these dorms have a lot less exhange students. I stayed a month in the dorm Kounicova during the summer school, but in my experience UU Erasmus+ report deadlines: 1 March 2017 for 1 st semester ~ 1 July 2017 for 2 nd semester or full year exchange page 2 of 4

this dorm was a lot worse, because the bathrooms are older and you share a kitchen with a whole floor (around 50 people) in stead of with just one roommate. Plus, if you live at the street side of this dorm, there will be a lot of noise, because the walls are not sound proof and the street is pretty busy. leisure & culture You will have a lot of free time if your courses are not master courses or bachelor courses that require you to write a lot of papers. The ESN in Brno organizes a quizz night and board games night every week, and organizes some trips during the semester as well. Besides, you will have plenty opportunities to form your own group and travel with them, or alone. The Czech culture will require some getting used to, because the food might be a lot different than you are used to, the language is totally different and the people might come across as rude. This rudeness is more a cultural difference though, as they are being polite in their language rather than their body language (they don't smile a lot). Because you probably won't understand the language, they will come across as cold people, so make sure to keep in mind that they are actually not that rude or cold at all, but just different than you might be used to. Another thing that struck most people (me included), is that it takes a looooong time to do shopping in the supermarket, because they work incredibly inefficient. There are good sides as well of this culture, of course, such as the beer culture. If you like beer, you are in the right spot, because Czech beers are the best, and they have a lot of them! Moreover, the beer is even cheaper than the water, so don't worry about having not enough money to party, because you will have enough money to afford this ;). suggestions/tips - If you want to be amongst exchange students: go to the dorm Vinarska! - If you are planning on learning the Czech language: consider doing a Czech language course in the summer in Brno. The faculty of arts is giving one every year, and the quality of teaching is pretty good. The structure of the course is amazing, and there are some cool activities planned outside the lessons, which are included in the price. Moreover, you will get to know the city before even starting your Erasmus period, which was great for me personally, as it can be overwhelming to do everything at once :). The language course is quite expensive, however, if you are not able to get a scholarship, but for me it was worth to spend the money. - If you like to travel, be sure to have a money buffer, as you will have the time and opportunity to do it during your exchange here! - Some people brought typical things with them from their home country, to give them to their new friends as a souvenir. I didn't think about this before going, but it is actually a nice idea, which I would have liked to know sooner. In case you like this idea: be sure to bring some souvenirs from your home country with you! CONCLUSIONS would you recommend this university/destination abroad to others? please explain Yes, definitely! The culture might require some getting used to, but that will be the case in most foreign countries anyway. Apart from that, my experience has been nothing but amazing here. The support from Masaryk was great, the welcoming week was a good way to meet new people and explore the city, and the dorm life with all the exchange students in one place was simply amazing; there is always someone to hang out with! Moreover, the living costs are very cheap and the location is perfect for travelling to a lot of amazing places. If you, however, are going abroad purely for academic purposes and want to follow high quality courses, you should consider going to another university. do you have any additional advice or comments? Choose your courses wisely; I know some people that came mainly for travelling/going abroad experiences, but chose courses that required way too much work. This got in their way, which made their experience a bit less. UU Erasmus+ report deadlines: 1 March 2017 for 1 st semester ~ 1 July 2017 for 2 nd semester or full year exchange page 3 of 4

Text boxes will expand automatically while typing! PREPARATION The first deadline was a long time before the departure, and I applied for another university than the one I was placed. Eventhough, it was very clear what we had to do and when we would receive the results concerning our application. counselling & support at Utrecht University The International Office of both my faculty and the UU are very helpful and they respond they s very quickly. Everytime I had a question, it was answered in the same day. I was very happy with these offices, they helped me a lot. However, the exam committee of my faculty is very bad at responding my messages; I had to wait for very long for any response and sometimes, the reactions didn't even answer my questions. academic preparation I planned to follow courses both at my faculty and other faculties, and I didn't know what to expect at all. That's why I didn't do any academic preparation; I thought it would be better if I would just go to the classes and see what the teacher expects me to do. language preparation UU Erasmus+ report deadlines: 1 March 2017 for 1 st semester ~ 1 July 2017 for 2 nd semester or full year exchange page 1 of 3

I didn't do any language preparation because the classes were all in English (as in Utrecht) so that was not necessary. However, I did follow a short Czech language course when I arrived in Brno, but the language was so hard that I decided not to continue. finances Before my departure, I worked to save a bit of money. For me, the grant and the compensation for the OV were sufficient to live in Czech Republic, because living there is cheaper then in The Netherlands, especially the rent. I used my savings for travelling around during some week-ends, and to go home for Christmas. study programme (content and organisational issues) STUDY ABROAD PERIOD The information system (blackboard) of Masaryk University was different from the one I was used to. This was confusing at the beginning, but I received a lot of s about how to use this system. As mentioned before, it was not very clear for me how the classes would look like, but I think it is not possible to know this exaclty before you experience the classes yourself. I followed courses at different faculties and I experienced big differences in organisational issues. Overall, the teachers were less professional, which was sometimes a bit annoying but it also resulted in more interaction between the teacher and the students. academic quality of education activities The classes were easier than at my faculty in Utrecht. Because students from different fields of studies followed the same course, teachers seemed to be a bit afraid to go into detail. They obviously did not want anyone to be confused about the information they provided, which is a good thing, but sometimes the classes were very easy. counselling & support at receiving university abroad The head of the International office at Masaryk University, Radka, is amazing! Whenever you had a problem, you could visit her or send her a message. Everytime a deadline was approaching, we received an with a video how to use the system, how to apply for courses, how to check-in in the dorms and how to check-out. I have nothing to complain about this. transfer of credits At Masaryk University, the same credit-system is used as at UU (ECTS). So there's no problem with the transfer of credits. welcome & orientation programme STUDENT LIFE When I arrived in Brno, a buddy was waiting for me. We already texted before and she brought me to my acccommodation. The orientation week was very good, I've met a lot of people during this week, because groups for the activities were changing all the time. It was really tiring but a lot of fun! This week was also very useful because there were lectures about living in Czech Republic, Czech language courses and how to survive abroad. accommodation I stayed in one of the dormitories of the Masaryk University. I had a single room, and shared the bathroom with one other girl. The kitchen was shared with the whole corridor, and you could hang out in the kitchen to meet a lot of new people. The accommodation was very cheap, but I was not happy with the lack of freedom. For example, it was not allowed to let guests enter after 10 PM, unless you would pay for this guest. Moreover, the cleaning ladies tended to enter your room sometimes to check whether the room was clean and you did not use more electrical devices than you said you would. Also the laundry was a lot of work: you had to sign up the UU Erasmus+ report deadlines: 1 March 2017 for 1 st semester ~ 1 July 2017 for 2 nd semester or full year exchange page 2 of 3

day before, and it was hard to sign up because there was only one washing machine for the whole dorm. Apart from these things, which made the stay in the dorms a bit uncomfortable, the dorms are a good place to meet new people! leisure & culture Masaryk University offers free sport courses, like climbing and fitness class. I attended both of these and would really recommend to do these. The Czech culture is very different from the Dutch culture, they are not good at English, like bureaucracy and put stamps and signatures everywhere! Receiving a package costs a lot of time because you have to go to the post office and stand in the line for around one hour, so you have to be patient to live in this country. However, it is a great and very interesting experience. I missed my bike, but the public transport system of Brno is very good! suggestions/tips Explore Czech Republic and its surroundings! Brno is very good located for trips to Budapest, Prague, Krakow, Vienna, but also Czech villages as Cesky Krumlov and Mikulov are definitely worth to visit! Taste the Czech beer and take your time with everything! CONCLUSIONS would you recommend this university/destination abroad to others? please explain Brno is a very bustling city with a lot of international students. Because it is cheap to live, you can experience your stay abroad without being worried about money, which makes your stay even better. It is very interesting to live in a completely different country with a completely different culture. I would definitely recommend Masaryk University to other students! do you have any additional advice or comments? Studying abroad takes much effort, but it is worth it! It got in my a case a little bit more complicated because I wanted to go to the faculty of informatics, but UU only had an arrangement with the faculty of social sciences. Because my master programme is quite interdiciplinary and I could also take courses at the faculty of informatics, this turned out to be a good solution. But it took some time and s to arrange this. counselling & support at Utrecht University Everyone was very helpful. In the summer holiday I went a couple of times to the international office, because I had some trouble with the forms and I needed signatures and stamps. I thought there might be problems because my erasmus coordinator was on holiday, but it was actually very easy to arange those things. academic preparation I did not do anything special language preparation My master degree in Utrecht was already fully in english, so I did not expect any problems. And it turned out that my english was good enough. finances The czech republic is compared to the netherlands not that expensive. So I saved up some extra money so I could travel and party and used my erasmus+ scholarship for the daily expenses. study programme (content and organisational issues) STUDY ABROAD PERIOD I had to pick courses from two different faculties, so I was afraid that that would be complicated. But it turned out to be pretty easy. The online system of the university seems a bit confusing at first, but it gets easier after a UU Erasmus+ report deadlines: 1 March 2015 for 1 st semester ~ 1 July 2015 for 2 nd semester or full year exchange page 1 of 3

while. They do have a different system for courses. They have two different enrol periods, the first one is to indicate that you are interested, the second one is to actually enrol. So if there are not enough interested students some courses are not given. This results in the fact that you probably have to change some of the courses you initially picked for you learning agreement. Courses can also be full or you do not fulfill the entry requirements, in this case you can apply for an exception, which in my case always ment I got accepted for the course. academic quality of education activities The quality of the courses was quite comparable with the quality in Utrecht. The big difference I noticed was the focus on memorizing. In the netherlands the focus of AI and Computer Science lays more on understanding and be able to use certain definitions, while in Brno the focus layed a lot on memorizing the actual definitions, something that I was completely not used to do, which made some courses very hard. counselling & support at receiving university abroad The erasmus coordinator of the Masaryk university is very friendly and helpful. I did not have a lot of problems, but I know some people who did and she was always there to help them out. transfer of credits Still working on this. welcome & orientation programme STUDENT LIFE The orientation week was pretty usefull and fun. I was too late to pick the fun package (They only had a limited number of spots) so I could only go to the basic events. They explain some usefull stuff, but you mainly get to know a lot of erasmus students in this week, which is the best reason to go there. I did not really miss the fun package in the end. accommodation The university provides accomodation for students who want it. I can totally recommend this. I slept in komarov, the dorm that is a bit outside the city centre but the only dorm with single rooms (most students in the czech republic share their bedrooms). Most of the erasmus students are in these dorms and it is the easiest and most fun was to meet new people. Almost all of the good friends I made slept in the same dorm and we often had dinner and lunches together, we had movienights, played sports and had preparties before we went to the city centre. leisure & culture Brno is really located in the middle of europe. From the city there are a lot of cheap bus companies that have busses to all the big cities around, like prague bratislava, vienna and krakow. There are also a lot of trips organised for students (I did not go to one of these, so I am not sure if they are good). But, it is very easy to travel around and I completely recommend that. Czech republic is a country where the pilsner comes from, so If you like beer you are in the right country. There are a lot of bars and pubs everywhere and the beer is very cheap. The czech language is very complicated. I tried to learn it when I was there, but a lot further than, I do not speak czech, speak slowly please and do you speak english I did not come. I did notice that it is a lot easier to get things done from locals if you at least talk the language. Without speaking czech, the locals can come off as a bit rude and blunt, but that for me added also something to the charm of the czech republic. (Although it was nice to have a cassiere at the supermarket that actually smiled at me again) suggestions/tips If you go there, try to travel around! But also do not forget to visit Brno, the centre is pretty small but the city UU Erasmus+ report deadlines: 1 March 2015 for 1 st semester ~ 1 July 2015 for 2 nd semester or full year exchange page 2 of 3

has a lot more to offer than only beer in the city centre. CONCLUSIONS would you recommend this university/destination abroad to others? please explain Yes! Brno is a real student city, and it the semester I was there, there were more than 500 erasmus students. It is a lot less touristic than prague, which let you experience more of the 'real' czech republic. But there are enough students, so the choice of bars, pubs and clubs is very broad. It is also the perfect location if you like traveling around, because the transport is very cheap and there are a lot of interesting cities close by. do you have any additional advice or comments? I think that in the end it does not matter that much where you go (Brno was actually my second choice), you will always have an amazing time! I made myself a clear list of what I still needed to do. And the information provided by the university/ties was clear on this part. It seems like a lot at first, but in the end it wasn't that bad. counselling/support at home university Especially the support before my departure was really good. I feel like I got the information I needed and I knew what to do. And if I had any questions I was always welcome, or got a quick response via . During my stay I didn't really need any support, and most things I needed, I needed from the host university. But towards the end I really had to keep in mind not forget sumitting all my Erasmus files when I suddenly received an . The support during the stay could be improved maybe (especially near the end), if there was a bit more contact. academic preparation I didn't need to prepare on any academic level. Except for that I needed to pass my courses before departure, but that was pretty easy to combine in my case. language preparation I didn't prepare myself in any way in the area of language. finances It is a good plan to have some extra money. You always spend more than you had expected. I made sure I had UU Erasmus report deadlines: 1 March 2013 for 1 st semester ~ 1 July 2013 for 2 nd semester or full year exchange/placement page 1 of 3

some extra savings and I tried to get a clear view of the costs of living. That was more than enough. study/placement abroad period study programme/work plan (concerning content and organisational issues) It was really hard to find a clear overview of courses on the website. And the one I did find, turned out to be outdated or just incorrect, which forced me to change my courses after arrival. Information on this part could definitly more clear for non-students (once I was in the university system, it was pretty easy to find fitting courses) academic quality of education/placement activities The quality of the courses differed hugely. And it was really hard to predict which courses would be challenging and which ones would be comepletely useless. I must say that overall, the education that was focused on solely international students was pretty poor. There were exeptions ofcourse, but with many of the courses I had difficulties to take them seriously. They were not at all up to speed with the quality of education I'm used to. Most thing were quite chaotic as well. Classes were cancelled last minute (multiple times), examdates were changed a few days in advance while students were already leaving and thus missing exams, and important s were frequently send to just a few persons. But some of the teachers and courses, I must say, were very inspiring nonetheless. counselling/support at host institution/organisation During orientation week it was made very clear what was expected of us, and where/who to go to in case of difficulties. transfer of credits Some courses don t deserve the credit they will get you. There is a big difference between courses with the same supposed courseload, which can be very frustrating. student life welcome/orientation programme Was very excellent and detailed! accommodation The halls of residence are fine, but one shouldn't expect too much. The rooms are in desparate need for some deepcleaning and updating. But the are fine for a few months. leisure/culture I have had a great time in the Czech Republic and especially Brno. One shouldn t expect too much form Brno, but it is a city that is very much alive and there is loads to do. The centrality of the city is maybe it's greatest selling point. In just a few hours you can be in Prague, Vienna and Bratislava, or go to Poland. The city center is small, but there is lots to do. One of the best parts is that one doesn't find too many tourists in Brno, local people often don't even speak English and can seem very grumpy. But when you get to know them, they are very friendly, especially when you try to speak Czech. suggestions/tips Some of the courses here are very interesting, but in this city, most international students came for the location in between West and Eastern Europe, so they are more interested in travelling. Culturally speaking this is one of the UU Erasmus report deadlines: 1 March 2013 for 1 st semester ~ 1 July 2013 for 2 nd semester or full year exchange/placement page 2 of 3

best locations ever. The hall of residence are so international, you will meet people from all over the world. Erasmus here is a very cultural and social experience. But could be academic as well, you just have to find challenges by yourself. conclusions would you recommend this host organisation/destination to others? please explain Definitly, if you want to see a bit more of this beautiful part of Europe or meet as many international people as you can. As said, there are very interesting parts to the academic life here, but sometimes they're a bit harder to find. do you have any additional advice or comments?
