2 Introduction The Jomo Kenyatta Foundation (JKF) is a publishing company established by the Government of Kenya for the sole object of advancing education and relief of poverty and distress of the public of EastAfrica. The Foundation was registered under the Companies Act, Chapter 486 of the Laws of Kenya and in 2003, its The number of years the Foundation has been in existence 46 mandate was reviewed to focus on advancing education and alleviation of poverty. The Foundation s Mission is to advance education and knowledge for poverty alleviation through quality publishing and provision of scholarships. Its Vision is to be the premier publishing house in Eastern Africa and a leading scholarship provider to the needy in Kenya JKF has supported the education of generations of Kenyans and aims to continue with its legacy of providing quality approved books used by millions of Kenyans. Publishing JKF has continued to publish a wide range of educational books to suit users in different levels such as those in pre-primary, primary, secondary and tertiary institutions. The Foundation also publishes books in English and Swahili adult fiction as well as wall charts and visual aids. The 680 Foundation s strong publishing list has enabled it to become one of the leading publishers in Kenya, commanding a sizeable share of the book market. The number of JKF titles in print The most successful series published by the JKF is the Primary Mathematics series, which is the most preferred mathematics series in Kenya by pupils and teachers. With some of the best authors and editors in the country, the Foundation continues to produce titles that are well suited for our customers by constantly researching on customers needs and developing the best titles. The Foundation works for the advancement of education: a key pillar in the Vision 2030 and the United Nations Millenium Development Goals. Profits from the sale of books goes towards paying scholarships for needy students.

3 Scholarships A core function of the Foundation is to provide scholarships for needy students in the country. Using profits from the sale of books, the Foundation assists bright but needy secondary school students in public secondary schools in Kenya. The scholarship covers the whole four-year secondary education course The JKF scholarship programme was started in 1968 and has to date assisted more than 9,000 Kenyan students pursue secondary school education. This translates to an expenditure of over Kshs. 400 million in the last 40 years. JKF is currently supporting a total of 1,175 beneficiaries in various public secondary schools across the country. The Foundation selects at least two students from every county, a boy and a girl, for the scholarship award. Beneficiaries of the scholarship awards have formed an association, the Jomo Kenyatta Foundation Scholarship Beneficaries Association (JKFBSA), whose aim is to give back and support the Foundation in it s mission. The Foundation continues to put a smile on the faces of the less fortunate members of society through publishing and the award of educational scholarships. Fundraising Due to increased demand for scholarships by needy students, the JKF has embarked on a fundraising programme to take in more students. The JKF staff also voluntarily contribute towards educating the needy. Currently, JKF staff fully sponsor four needy students in various schools in Kenya.

6 Performance Performance analysis from Our students continue to excel in their KCSE examinations as shown in the graph below. In 2012, more than 80 students scored a mark of A-. Number of students Grade Without the Foundation s intervention, many of these students would not have gone to school and would have continued languishing in need. Now, they can proceed to universities and into fulfilling careers.
